The Zacchaeus in You

Well, without any long introductions, let's say a prayer and we'll begin.

Dear Lord, it's a privilege to be here on your holy Sabbath day.

What an awesome blessing to be able to hear the word freely.

We claim in the promise of Luke 11 verse 13, which says, If ye, then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?

And so, dear Lord, this evening we're praying and we're asking for the outpouring of your spirit, please fill us.

These things we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

If you have your Bibles this evening, turn with me to Luke chapter 19 and we're going to read verses 1 through to 10.

What I should have done is I should have asked Christian how long I have So we don't know how long this thing's gonna go.

They're not sure so we'll see what happens.

And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

And behold, now I recognize that I always have this problem when I come to this.

If I'm speaking too quickly, because I know my accent is different, just say, Sam, we didn't get that.

I'm happy, I'm more than happy to do that.

And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

And he sought to see Jesus who he was, and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way.

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste and come down.

And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully.

And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, that he's gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

And Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, For half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house.

To this house, for so much as he also is a son of Abraham.

For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

2016, the British Medical Journal published an article.

They published an article looking at height and how it affects things such as pay in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I don't know if you've ever heard the full title.

So taller height or taller stature was strongly correlated with participants spending longer in full-time education.

Taller stature was strongly correlated with participants having obtained a degree.

Higher height had an increased odds of working more in quote-unquote professional roles.

Taller stature in the UK was correlated with a higher household income.

Taller stature was correlated with lower levels of social deprivation.

If you're male, if you're male, if you're male, and you're living in England, for every 2.5 inches taller a man is, he earns just over £1, 580 on average a year more.

Now I did the maths, that's about, oh I didn't write it down.

He's earning more per year for every 2.5 inches taller that a male is.

Over someone's lifetime, they're earning an extra £30, 000 or maybe an extra $30, 000.

You remember the story of King David, don't you?

You remember the story of King David where Samuel is looking for a king, he's looking for a king and his biases are affecting him.

He doesn't realize it, but his biases are affecting him.

And as he's looking for a king, things like height and stature are coming into his way of choosing the next king of Israel.

And God had to tell him in 1 Samuel 16 verse 7, but the Lord said to Samuel, look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him.

For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

You remember when David was facing Goliath?

The Bible goes to great lengths to describe the height of Goliath and the length of his spear or his sword or whatever it was he was carrying.

It just basically, if you just look up stature in the Bible, do a little study on that, you'll see that stature tends to be correlated with a type of advantage.

When the Israelites were going to take the land and they felt as though, I don't know, the Canaanites, we felt like grasshoppers in their sight.

The height was kind of, it seemed as like having an advantage.

But here you have a man in Zacchaeus that despite the odds that are stacked against him, he's overcome the biases that even affect us in 2022.

He's gone past the glass ceiling as it were, he's become the chief tax collector, the chief.

You've got an individual who has, I guess, what probably many people, many students come to Loma Linda for.

And so, so, so, So here you have a man who has that.

Here you have a man that's done what many millennials and Gen Zs are seeking to do.

He's overcome the biases of society against him.

He's broken through some of the barriers, the mental barriers that maybe people have put him in a box.

He's done that, he's been there, he's done that.

You've got an individual where I guess if you were looking for a destination called earthly success, He's taken the plane and he's arrived at that destination and he's been there for a few years.

But today in Luke 19 verses 1 through to 10, the Scriptures paint the picture of a man who has it all but is still searching for something.

Sometimes when you can't see a clock in your preaching, I get nervous because I just don't know how long I'm going, but there's a clock up there.

We're good, we're good, we're good, we're good.

If you walked in today and I said, God is good, he would respond all the time.

If you say to him, oh, we've got potluck, he's not going to look at you confused, like what's potluck?
