You’ve Got to Know Somebody

It's a privilege, always a privilege to come to Advent Hope.

That God will keep his hand like an eagle's wings protecting the good people who love the Lord.

In view of all the disasters and tornado deaths and tragedies, Adam and Hope becomes even more important every day.

And we know Jesus is coming soon, things are gradually back and forth, back and forth, and the day is approaching.

Our text this morning is found in John 17, verse 3.

John John 17 verse 3 says in the King James Version and this is life eternal that's what we're interested in That they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

The emphasis this morning is on the 1 word, know.

Actually there's a whole theological theme running through the entire Bible on the word know.

Miller, to you, what does Christianity mean?

And you know, from a doctor like that, loving the Lord, serving the Lord, you expect something really grand and profound.

He answered by saying, Christianity to me is Jesus and I are friends.

You know when I read that I thought, no, that's kind of simplistic.

You expect that from a five-year-old, 10-year-old.

Here the doctor says, well, Jesus and I are friends.

I spent a lot of time thinking about that answer by Dr.

And my sermon is trying to go a little deeper into the meaning of that simple statement, Jesus and I are friends.

Now we have a young couple and I haven't seen them for a while, but they got married what it's a couple months now?

I'm going to use them for illustration because they should know today what it means to know each other.

We were created in the beginning by God in order for him to know us and for us to know him.

We were created as a child of God with whom God and Jesus planned to have an eternal friendship.

He came in Eden in the cool of the day to visit Adam and Eve, put the arms around their necks, squeeze them, and say, isn't it lovely we can have this happy time together?

Evening after evening, they spent time together, talking and frolicking and enjoying each other's company, expecting them to grow up, not physically, they're pretty tall, maybe somebody suggests 15 to 17 feet, so that's probably high enough, but to grow up inwardly, to fill the lives with knowledge and understanding and an increased capacity to receive love and to give love.

So many times we're saying God loves us and we talk about God's love for us.

We need to talk more about our love for him.

Bless the Lord, oh my soul, David cried out so many times.

We come to worship to do that very thing, to bless the Lord, oh my soul, because you are wonderful enough for us to come and set the world aside and dress up nicely and take our Bibles and our Sabbath school lesson and come into your divine presence and bless your soul, oh my Lord.

God looked forward to an eternal friendship And only against that background can we understand the terrible nature of sin.

And God's heart is aching over his children because he wanted to love them, but they don't seem to understand.

In 1 Samuel 3, 7, It talks about knowing.

If you have your Bibles, that would be all right to turn to.

It talks about little Samuel, little boy.

Mother took him, you know, they prayed for a boy.

Remember, Hannah couldn't have any children.

She prayed and prayed, went to the sanctuary and cried in the morning.

And the priest scolded her, you're drunk, and you know, what are you doing here?

And she said, no, no, no, I'm not intoxicated.

If I'm intoxicated, it's the love of God.

All right, go home, God will give you a son.

I don't know how he found out so quickly, but God must have spoken to him.

And she went home, had the little boy, Samuel, and she said, I'll give him to the Lord, and maybe at the age of 4 and 5, she took him to the sanctuary and gave him up.

But every year she would come and make a new robe for him, and she loved that little boy.

Priest Eli and a couple of boys of his own.

But about Samuel in chapter 3, verse 7, it talks about how Samuel was called to prophetic office.

You know the story, we tell it to the children.

I love to tell, I told that story a hundred times.

You know, Samuel's sleeping and the voice of God keeps, Samuel, Samuel, and he runs to Eli.

Eli, do you need a glass of water, you know, at night?

So Samuel goes back to sleep, and the voice comes again.

The third time he said, 00I think somebody's calling you, all right.

Samuel, Samuel, say, speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.

And lo and behold, the voice came again, and Samuel, Samuel, and Samuel was ready.
