The Greatest Disruptions in History

It was interesting, a little while back, as I was studying the Protestant movement, I realized that in the movement of Adventism, we have that Protestant movement alive and well.

And what I mean by That is, we could come to an event like this and 20 of us could be doing the exact same thing.

Usually at the national ASI, it may be health ministry.

I mean, everyone seems to be in similar health ministry.

And sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be advantageous if more of us were joining each other.

Organizations in the world, you know, if there's little guys, it might be beneficial if they join rather than compete.

So as I've talked to a few about that, oftentimes it comes down to, we don't necessarily trust each other.

We don't have the faith in each other that you're gonna look out for me and I'm gonna look out for you.

But it would be neat if, you know, as we look at the Mormon church, they really have a unified brand.

And within Adventism, we have about 673 different brands.

There's some individuals here who've been really challenging a number of entities at the general conference.

Why is it when I go on YouTube, I'm finding all these different entities but the church's ones?

So there's a lot of different ideas there that I'm sure we could go into.

On 1 of those returns on investment, you mentioned education, David.

I saw a recent model, a for-profit school, where they said, we are going to invest in such quality of education that we are going to have students apply, We're only going to take a certain amount of students, and we're going to allow them to come here free for, I believe, it's 2 years.

And at the end of those 2 years, they have a 96% placement ratio, and they get 10% of your first year salary be paid back.

And they got their for-profit venture capital, I think they raised $30 million to start the school, and it's unbelievable the results that are happening.

So There's different ways we can go about doing ministry and business.

This is the part 3 of the presentations that I'm honored to share today.

This one's called Business is My Religion.

And for those who may not have been here this morning, I just wanna recap those 3 powerful statements that really have inspired me in my life.

The first 1 from Publishing Ministry 391.

There is a fearfulness to venture out and to run risks in this great work, fearing that the expenditure of means would not bring returns.

What if means are used and yet we cannot see that souls have been saved by it?

What if there is a dead loss of a portion of our means?

Then Ellen White says, better work and keep at work than do nothing.

You know not which shall prosper, this or that.

Second statement says, religion and business are not 2 separate things, they are 1.

And then the third statement from Manuscript Release 19, such a plethora of things Ellen White wrote.

It says, you have felt that business is business, religion is religion, but I tell you that these cannot be divorced.

If you seek God with the whole heart, he will be found of you.

But said Christ, without me, you can do nothing.

You are not to put asunder that which God has joined, business and religion.

How many of us have heard of the term disruption?

All right, just someone tell me, what does it mean to disrupt something?

Okay, that's almost the dictionary definition.

The change up the flow or the normality at which something has been going.

So a number of industries in the world right now are experiencing disruption.

Things have been going along as they always have for a long time, but now they're seeing things change drastically.

We touched on the largest accommodation provider in the world, Airbnb, doesn't own any real estate.

And the question should be in a Hilton or Marriott boardroom, why didn't we think of that?

And that's what's happening in a lot of industries.

Why did the big guy, the established name, not think of the next idea?

And so some companies have started to say, we need to create disruption intentionally.

So for instance, Google has their Skunk Works and X-Labs, basically where they are challenging internal entities, and if you will, a company within a company that says, David, and these 10 folks, men and women, your job is to beat us at our own game.

And as soon as you get that good idea, share it with us.

I think we're right for a disruption in Adventism.

There's different opinions on what that disruption looks like.

And today I'm going to share the 3 greatest disruptions in history.

Or should I say the greatest 2.5 disruptions.

Another industry I want to share with you, Amazon.

I think they're getting into it a little bit.

Netflix, the largest publisher of or disseminator of films, does not own theaters.

And then Facebook, the largest producer of content, or excuse me, the disseminator of content, media, but doesn't own it and is not creating it.

When Steve Jobs was asked, why aren't you doing more market research?

He said, because people don't know what they want until you show it to them.

People don't know they need us until they experience it.

You know, how many of you had a Nokia phone?

Or maybe, well, that's a good, I'm going to use Nokia.

Remember the days with Nokia, they were nice.

I could play Snake when I was waiting on someone, on Little Game Snake, and life was great.

I started to figure out how to text, and man, this is excellent.

And then Apple comes along and says, your life is not complete.

You need all of your music library in your pocket.

Oh, yeah, maybe that would be nice, yeah.

You need everything in the world in your pocket.

But the point being, they really were intentional, and Apple is a great story of how they almost crashed multiple times, kicked out, fired their founder, Steve Jobs, until they became very intentional about what are we gonna do to take it to the next level.

So I wanna share with you about case study number 1 we're gonna look at.

This disruptor, and what I've seen, it's interesting, when God is about to do something fascinating, he often does it with some sort of disruption in technology.

Hossel from Southern that about 50 or so years before Moses wrote the Pentateuch, writing came onto the scene, the written word.

He had to know that skill in order to write something down for someone else.

I just heard recently that in 1844 in the spring, the telegraph was launched.

You just think about what was God preparing?

Now at the time of Gutenberg, he said, you know what, I'm going to get into the movable type industry.
