Pentecost 2: Write On My Heart

Heart Transplant

Father in heaven, we're indeed thankful for this palace in time, this hiding place.

And you have provided this special space and time.

And we ask that as we enter it that we would sense your presence.

We've been talking over the last few nights about the heart.

And several days ago, there was a very famous person who received a heart transplant.

He was 1 of the most and is perhaps still, but during his time he was 1 of the most powerful people in government, even though he wasn't up front too much, but behind the scenes, he held the levers of power for many years.

How many of you know who I'm talking about?

How many of you haven't been watching the news or even hearing about the news?

Maybe there's been a media blackout here at Southern.

It's probably those very interesting classes you attend.

And you're probably just reviewing the notes from your favorite teachers.

They called them Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

And they were so interesting, we now call them the Bible.

But this person I'm talking about was Vice President or former Vice President Dick Cheney.

And because he was a little bit older, 71 years old, now some of us, that seems very old, and it still seems old to me too, but it's really not that old.

71 years, if you consider you're supposed to live forever.

71 years old, but they had a huge debate about whether or not he should have received a transplant.

Maybe someone else couldn't receive that transplant because he received it.

They gave him a battery of tests as they do all the people that are on the heart transplant list.

They try and see whether or not emotionally they're stable enough and cognitively their brain's going to function because people don't live necessarily that long after a heart transplant and you want the ones that have the best possibility.

And so they were scrutinizing whether or not he was worthy to receive a new heart.

How many of you are thankful that God does not put you on a waiting list for a new heart?

He has Everything that's needed to give you a new heart tonight.

And as we saw in our time together on our first night together, we live in an age of broken heartedness.

Our people here tonight whose hearts are broken.

There are people here tonight who are breaking people's hearts.

This happens a lot on campuses like this.

I remember I was on a campus like this and I can remember not only does this happen, but sometimes we're unprepared to deal with the fallout of broken hearts.

Because we really haven't given our heart to 1 who was broken to 1 who was brokenhearted for us.

Praise God even though our hearts are desperately wicked, even though, as it says in Jeremiah 17, the sin of Judah is written with a pin of iron with a point of diamond on the hearts of the people, even though we have heart disease, God still identifies with us.

We studied in our first night together that even though we're broken hearted, in Hebrews chapter 2 we learned that Christ identifies with us.

And we went through 8 points as to why he does that, which we won't review now, but you can get on audioverse.org.

Secondly, we saw that not only was he identifying with us, he identifies for us.

He does all those things we talked about.

Number 3, we found that ultimately when he comes again, he will identify us.

He'll say, that's my son, That's my daughter.

He identifies with, for, and he will identify us.

And in light of that, we learned in our second time together, why in the world then would we not identify with Him?

I remember in my wedding 20 years ago, it really should have been 25 years ago.

But my father-in-law didn't like me, so his name was Laban.

So 20 years ago, I can remember at my wedding, 1 of my nephews, I don't know if he's here tonight, Justin Nephew, he's up in Michigan now, used to go, how many of you remember Justin, nephew?

And his little boy, Justin, is now a huge specimen of humanity.

He ran to the front during the wedding and he grabbed my leg and he thought that I was his father.

And he looked up, he looked up at me and he screamed.

Then he grabbed his dad's leg and his dad looked down and they identified with each other.

So God identifies with us even if we get confused.

How many of you are glad you weren't that prophet?

Jeremiah 31, verse 3 and 4, I have loved you with an everlasting love.

I've loved you with an everlasting love, therefore with loving kindness have I drawn you.

But keep reading verse 4, again I will build you and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel." Why is he calling Israel a virgin?

Because Israel was anything but a virgin according to the first chapters of Jeremiah.

They had been involved in all kinds of immorality.

And yet God is saying, with loving kindness, I still draw you.

I not only will draw you, I will make you a virgin again.

I don't know about you, but I think that's a wonderful promise.
