01 Four Gospels and the Sanctuary

Sanctus Sanctorum is the Latin word for the most holy place.

I think just the Latin sounds really cool.

And some people knew that, made that reference from some other places.

And it's very important for us as Seventh-day Adventists.

And so this is the seminar that you are in.

If this is not the seminar that you are in, you can leave now and the exit signs are behind you and just pay a $50 penalty fee and you can go.

Okay, we'll have a word of prayer and we'll get started this morning.

Gracious Father, we thank you for conventions and convocations and meetings such as this.

Father, there is so much room for human error in these events and Father for where we have failed we ask for your forgiveness.

Father we pray for optimal conditions for your word to be transmitted to all ears and all hearts and all minds.

Father, I ask that you bless each of our brothers and sisters and also myself that in spite all the chaos of this convention that we sit here quietly and humbly before your feet.

We ask for your spirit to teach us for the next 5 seminars, but especially for this 1 we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

So you'll forgive me, I'm going to try to juggle.

I got the whiteboard, I got my iPad, and this is just my first time presenting like this.

For those of you who may have been around GYC for a while, these are basically the same presentations presented about 10 years ago.

The EECOM, the executive committee, was on a retreat and they asked me to teach Sabbath school and I did and I presented something on the sanctuary and they said, man this is so awesome you should present it this year's GYC and I'm like well I already presented this about 10 years ago and some of us are like, we were like 2 years old 10 years ago.

So it's, you know, there's a whole new generation, a whole new whatever.

And so if you were here 10 years ago, number 1, you're really old.

But number 2, some of this stuff may be familiar.

But 3, this is a sanctuary, so this stuff can never go old, yeah?

And so if anything this is a refresher course for you.

I did change some of the slides around and some of the order around and I've been trying to streamline some of these aspects, but this first presentation is entitled, for the 4 Gospels and the sanctuary, there is someone named Dudley Canwright, he's an Australian, if you know your Adventist history, a lot of problems come from Australians, if you're an Australian we love you, but it's just historically has been that way, and he has said, and he left the Adventist Church, he said that Seventh-day Adventists make everything turn upon their view of the sanctuary.

If they're wrong on this, their whole theory breaks down.

And this is a quote that I do agree with.

I agree that Seventh-day Adventists, everything hinges upon the heavenly sanctuary.

This is a huge issue in the church right now and depending on what kind of flavor of Adventism that you're a part of, You may have a different view on this.

Some believe this is a whole cover-up of 1844, the mistake that we made, and this is denominational shame.

And I would present the point of this seminar is number 1 to show you that it is biblical, 2 it is vital to your identity as a Seventh-day Adventist, and 3 we are still continuing studies on this and there's new research, new data coming out, new revelations on the sanctuary that's very exciting.

All right, so let's go here to some parts.

And by the way, just to make this optimal for you, I do recommend that you have a notebook, pen, and the ability to use your thumb and your 3 fingers and a writing utensil increases your neural activity rather than just staring at a screen at a boring PowerPoint and then falling asleep in about 40 minutes or so, okay?

So being active and then opening your Bible is good.

But this is, we're just trying to get you involved, okay, and active.

Just a couple, just a couple verses here.

Psalms 29.9, I'm not gonna read all of it, but in his temple does everyone speak of his glory.

Ezekiel 43, this is a very interesting passage but that middle part says that they may be ashamed of their iniquities.

1 purpose of studying the sanctuary is so that we understand what happens to our sins.

The plan of salvation is demarcated in sanctuary, but also what happens to sin?

I'm kind of jumping the gun here, but if you are of an evangelical background or even an evangelical Adventist, you believe that when you sin and you ask for forgiveness, your sin just disappears.

Jesus died at the cross and then the sin went to Jesus, then the sin just died.

It was transferred and removed away from you amen we are cleansed from all of our sins at the cross but they did not go away anyway it's kind of an anatomy of what happens to sin Psalm 73 verse 17 I believe David or whoever the writer of that psalm is talking about what happens to the wicked?

This is kind of not fair and the conclusion there is then verse 17, until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I understood their end.

What's the ultimate destiny of those who are righteous and of the wicked?

In Revelation 11, the angel says, rise up and measure the temple of God.

So today we're gonna do that, rise up and measure the temple of God.

And in John 1, 14, the word was made flesh and dwelt among us.

We beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten, the father full of grace and truth.

So really, I just, you know, I use these analogies not to be crass or not to be, not to make holy things unholy, but just to help us understand, bringing it down on an accessible level.

And it's as if that God is just, He's ultimate holiness, He's ultimate purity.

In a sense, He's like ultimate nuclear energy, okay?

Imagine ultimate nuclear energy with love and a personality attached.

And what He wants to do, He wants to hang out with us, yes?

His ultimate desire of the universe is to hang out with you and me.

But what happens when nuclear energy goes right next to you?

What does a loving God do who is, he's the embodiment of holiness and we are sinners.

How did the 2 reconcile or are in the same space?

And it's as if this nuclear energy condescends into like a hazmat suit.

You guys know hazardous materials, those, you know, astronauts, I don't know what astronauts, astronaut suits, right?

And the nuclear energy is contained in that suit, and that suit comes down and can interact with humanity.

And so holiness condescended in a human body and interacts as Jesus with humanity.

And that's what John is trying to get at.

The word was made flesh and dwelt and that word for dwelt is the word for Shekinah, same same word for Shekinah glory in the heavenly sanctuary.

So the heavenly sanctuary is kind of a precursor to Jesus, precursor to the hazmat suit and later on when the hazmat suit the real Jesus came out we don't need the hazmat suit anymore because we got Jesus.

I'm just trying to put this in different vocab so that we can understand it.

All right I'm gonna use a law of spirit or prophecy how many of your lovers of spirit or prophecy how many of your haters of spirit raise your hands at shame time general conference is watching who you are.

All right, so this is from Christ Object Lessons, page 133, and I use it.

Spirit of Prophecy is just, it's not only great, It's the, what's better than great?

Okay, the significance of the Jewish economy is not yet fully comprehended.

Now by the way, she uses the word economy.

02 Live Streaming the Heavenly Sanctuary

Alright, we'll get started here with session 2 of Sancta Sanctorum Rising.

Should be re-entitled Temperature Rising.

We pray at the beginning of this, not for formality's sake.

You do understand we are approaching a holy topic and we want to make sure that we have the Holy Spirit's instruction here.

I use anecdotes and humor to keep you awake, you understand, and some of this can be a little bit, for people who are not familiar with this, this is kind of really high, or if you're too familiar with it, it's like, ah, I know all this stuff.

So I'm trying to reframe and to provide a little bit of fresh perspective so that it's just like, oh, I never saw it in that way.

So that's kind of the modality, all right?

Let's have a word of prayer together and ask together for the Lord's blessing Lord we thank you very much for being kind to us and good to us and Lord we ask that you be teacher to us through your Holy Spirit especially when it comes to this topic, we ask for your blessing.

Bless each of my brothers in this room, each of my sisters in this room, and speak to us and to our hearts in a way that only you can, beyond the knowledge or humor or delivery of the speaker, but in only way that you can we pray in Jesus name Amen this is part 2 entitled live streaming the heavenly sanctuary live streaming the sanctuary on the on your right you'll see a diagram of the sanctuary once again this diagram shows different is a diagram for different things In 1 way it is a eschatological timeline.

Eschatology is a big theology word for last days.

It is a timeline for the last days, if you will.

And so here you have on the outer courtyard is when Jesus was on this earth.

And then when he came and he came and died and he ascended to heaven in A.D.

31 to 1844 is represented by this holy place where Jesus is in the most, is in the holy place in heaven and then in 1844 he entered into the most holy place until 2JC.

I just thought it was a really cool thing.

If you know what Y2K is, that means you're old.

If you don't know what that is, look it up on Wikipedia.

So these are the 3 components of Jesus's ministry and they point to, and then by the way, is there another room after the most holy place?

And so the high priest has to now come out and then God's people are outside not here, not here, but here on earth waiting for the high priest to come back.

Okay, that's kind of the modality that we see.

The outside represents, as you know in 1 Corinthians, the temple is the body, is your body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, if you will, the body is.

So you have outside, it's clean, it's water, it's blood.

In the holy place, it parallels the mental.

So you're eating the Word of God, there's light, there is the altar of incense and prayer, and then inside is the spiritual with the Most Holy Place.

Then there are also soteriological diagrams, The outside points to justification, where Jesus has forgiven you for all your sins.

Our salvation is by Jesus and Jesus alone by the merits of what He provided to at the cross.

That is foundational and some people say because it's so foundational, that's all there is.

Now, all the provisions for salvation were given to us at the cross.

The rest of the sanctuary tells what the blood provided to us by the cross, what the blood does.

So without the cross, there's no blood, without blood, there's no functionality of the sanctuary at all.

This is a huge controversy point because evangelical Sunday people, they believe up to here and they stop there and they say Jesus died for me, my sins have gone poof, therefore I'm saved.

Methodists have come in and they provided this element.

There are lifestyle changes where you are saved by Jesus but the Holy Spirit actually comes and then in your mind and your heart and they actually change and then and holification happens.

That's sanctification here and then Avinash bring this third component of glorification, right?

It's just not just these 2 but there's actually a glorifying component.

And then we're going to talk about, that's the addition that Adventists bring.

There are also ecclesiological emphases that I just mentioned, but Protestants, namely, they love this world.

Okay, at the cross, at the cross, I forgot the rest of the words of the song.

I'm going totally blank because my adrenaline is so high right now.

We got them from the Sunday people and we put it into our Adventist hymnal and we call them out but they're not Adventist.

This is the conspiracy of all conspiracies.

And so when Adventism showed up on board, we were online with them here, we were online with the Methodists here, okay?

Methodists were here and then they've just kind of gravitated back outside a bit, if you will.

We have a fuller presentation, if you will.

Now, Roman Catholics are all about here, okay?

Now, sanctification can only occur through sacraments and the sacraments are these like little, little, little, little tokens or little droplets of which I can become divine And the sacraments are only are protected and distributed by 1 entity.

The priesthood is literally their priesthood as their priests.

So in Catholic, in the mass, is there a table, a literal table of showbread?

These are all visceral, visual, and tangible elements.

And then through the church, you're saved through the church, your membership is through the church that you become more like Jesus, okay?

Now I went to a Catholic school for 4 years, I'm not dogging them, this is what we learned for 4 years, this is Catholic theology, alright?

And then you have here the most holy place, and this is Pentecostals are a modern phenomenon, and they just want the power of God now!

They want the presence of God now they want to be screwed I don't know why I don't know why I'm screaming too anyway this and they want the one-on-one dwelling experience Shekinah glory now experience yes or no where are Adventists on this spectrum And I would say there are there are evangelical Adventists, they're exactly the same as Sunday keepers but they just go to church on a Saturday, but their theology is exactly the same.

They believe they're saved by membership.

They're saved by the structure itself is the means by which...

Now the structure in the Adventist Church is the means by which the gospel is spread, not salvation, you understand.

And then, Are there Pentecostal Adventists?

03 Navigating Revelation through the Holy Place

The title is navigating revelation through the holy place.

Episode 1, we talked about the 4 Gospels.

Episode 2, we looked about how not just spatial but temporal positioning, the calendar, right?

Now we're going to put some emphasis on Holy Place and this today, episode 3 and episode 4, I use the word episode because of our TV show, seminars 3 and 4 will be a little bit more intense.

So are you, are you gonna be on the same page with me with the turbulence that's expected to come.

So the daily services, the daily services happened when?

Daily, very, not a trick question, alright?

The courtyard, the outside, had 2 services, the daily and the yearly.

The daily was 1 of the most important services.

It happened every morning and every evening and involved penitence.

So you come, you bring, a lamb was killed and every morning and every evening it covered the sins for all the camp of Israel.

The people provided the offerings in that week, the priests ministered the temple, the Levites helped the priests with menial tasks, and they were part of the music.

Music and sanctuary very, very connected with each other.

In the courtyard, and this is for some of you who don't know, you had the bronze altar or the copper altar.

Another word for this is the altar of sacrifice.

This is important because later on in Revelation, Revelation was, I saw an altar.

And it won't specify which altar it is until later on it says, hey, it was made out of gold.

If it's a bronze altar, then for sure it's this 1.

So what it's made of is pretty important.

It had rings, inside was made out of wood, outside was bronze, and it's interesting that the furniture items that were outside in the courtyard were made out of bronze, meaning they looked like gold, but they weren't gold.

And then everything inside was made out of gold.

This points to the humanity and divinity of Jesus according to Leslie Harding in his book.

The horns were there symbolizing strength and then there was holy fire.

1 was not to put regular fire on this altar.

Regular fire, also another word for regular fire is profane fire.

It's like you know I just imagine that someone with a cigarette lighter and be like oh no the fire went out, they just take out the cigarette, I don't know why a priest would have a cigarette lighter, but he would take it out and just kind of putting it and relighting it.

So when the sanctuary service was started, fire came down from heaven and it lighted up the surfaces And that fire was to be kept eternally burning, and it was the job of the Levites to constantly feed that fire.

If that fire went out, the Levites, some of the Levites, some of the priests might be freaking out, be like, oh man, and then they were not to put common fire to it.

So this whole in American society We have John FK you go to the the tomb in Washington DC And then it's the tomb of the eternal fire and it's a constantly it's kind of similar to that, but that's still common fire.

Yeah, we're talking about holy fire here.

All right, there's the second item here, the bronze sea.

Another word for bronze sea was cleansing labor.

I don't know why it's called bronze sea, it was smaller than the sea.

It was just 1 pool, if you will, in the olden days.

By Solomon's time, it was 10 small stations.

So it doesn't matter whether there's 1, or whether there's 10, or whether there's 7, it's important there's water there.

Water and blood are the 2 components of the courtyard.

Here you have a wash basin, there's dish that was round made from the copper mirrors of Hebrew women priests would wash before entering the holy place.

And in John 19 you see that these 2 elements, the water and the blood symbolize Jesus' ministry when he came to this earth.

And the apex of that is in John 19, when he was on the cross, when he was hit by the spear on the side, not hit by the spear but speared on the side, yes, and what came out?

And for John, he, John uses uber a lot of sanctuary motifs and images.

And so he's definitely talking about sanctuary image here.

John 1934, 1 of the soldiers with a spear pierced the side, forth came out blood and water.

Revelation 1 and 5, unto him that loved us washed us from our sins in his own blood.

Now in Leviticus you have all these sacrifices that are mentioned.

I was privileged to be part of the Inverse Bible Study Guide for Sabbath School.

You have all the ABSG, the Bible Study Guide there for free, but you also have inverse there for free.

Inverse is for young adults, but it's also for older adults as well.

And there's 1 on Leviticus, probably the 1 of the most profound studies on the book of Leviticus, because Leviticus is hard, it's boring, but it's super profound once you get it.

Anyway, you go to chapters 12345, and each 1 talks about a different kind of sacrifice.

Okay, now I'm not gonna go into all these because there's a lot of detail here, But what these sacrifices are pointing to, it's like, you guys know rope?

The younger generations don't know what rope is, they've never seen it.

They go to Pathfinders and they go to the knot, you know, on or, like, What is this?

Regular rope is long, yes, and it's made of strands, right?

You have 1 strand and you pull on it, it'll snap.

You put a lot of strands together and you twist it, what happens, you have a very robust, strong piece of rope, okay?

Each of these sacrifices is kind of like a strand that points to a particular aspect of the cross.

1 sacrifice cannot explain the entire meaning and all the ramifications of the cross.

So 5 or 6 of them are used, and all of them combined and twisted together bring forth a composite picture of Jesus on the cross.

So you have 1 here, number the first 1, and then in parentheses you have other other another part.

The parentheses talks about the sacrifice meant, same sacrifice, but meant for a priest.

So it's the same category and for your convenience and for the way I think I just put those together.

And the burnt offering means you put the animal on the barbecue, and the thing is completely roasted.

No one's eating anything, it is charred, it is ashified, It is gone.

And that symbolizes the complete consecration of Jesus.

Number 2, depending on your Bible translation and the Bible translations have just made a mess of the Hebrew, but it's called the accessory, the grain, the drink, or the meal offering, okay?

It's all of the above depending what your translation is.
