01 The Staff No Longer Yours

We are so grateful that you chose to join us.

Coming to GYC is like going to an Adventist potluck.

If you're a member of my church, we have the best potlucks ever.

I have to come and do a potluck examination before we conclude that.

We're going to introduce ourselves a little bit, but if you are looking to learn a little bit about leadership, that's why we're here.

Jermaine, tell us a little bit about yourself before we kind of get started and we'll talk about the format of how this is going to work.

So, you might already know, I'll be speaking for the evening meeting.

I spent 18 years of my life until I moved to the U S.

And then I was not an Adventist all my life.

And the Lord worked a miracle in my life.

I was running away from Adventism, running away from the Bible.

I'm going to give you a job where you're going to work with all Adventists.

And anyway, anyway, the Lord changed my life and here I am today.

And my best friend, Garrett Morgan, how about you tell us about yourself?

So Jermaine and I come from very different backgrounds.

I fell away a little bit and I was like 16 or 17 years old around the GYC age, I would say.

And, anyway, it, the Lord brought me back.

I was the Adventist that kind of, I kind of knew what we believed, but when it came to a relationship with Jesus, it was non-existent, really.

I could open the Bible to you and tell you exactly what we believed.

But again, when it came to knowing Jesus, there was 0.

And so 1 of the things that you're going to learn from this series is, like I said last night, we really as leaders need to learn to get over ourselves.

And a lot of times when we share something in scripture, I don't know if there, I think this happens to you a lot too, when you prepare a message and you prepare a seminar or a lecture, a lot of times God speaks to you first and then he repeats himself before you get to talk to anybody else.

And if you're married like me, God speaks through your wife too.

And then by the time you come, you're so humble.

The voice of God is often a little bit tighter than my wife's, but I believe the Lord speaks through the mouth of my wife.

Jermaine and I are also, co-hosts of the God Inc.

Podcast, which is that little logo right there.

We have a booth in the exhibit tent, if you'd like to go over there and take a look at the exhibits we're there.

But we have a couple of seasons on the life of Moses.

And how this is going to work is, our podcast is just us having conversations about scripture.

And so we're not going to really be preaching to you.

We're going to have a discussion through the lens of Moses, and we're just going to feed off of each other.

And at the end of every session, we may have about 10 minutes left.

We're going to open it up to questions from you guys, because I talked to a few of you as you came in and III remember in our conversations, a few of you are saying that we're involved in church, but there isn't a strong leadership pipeline.

So a lot of responsibility is falling on us.

I'm really thankful for those conversations because as both pastors, we need leaders in our churches that are not pastors.

And we have to add to that, we need young leaders.

And we're going to talk about leadership the whole time.

For others, we flew halfway across the country to be here.

Lord, there are so many good things that are being spoken today.

And we're just going to try and soak them all up.

Father, do you want Jermaine and I help us to get over ourselves as we are talking from your word and made the word shine through, we pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.

So I want to open up by simply saying this, and we kind of started this at the beginning, but God has something very similar.

In fact, the same between Moses and us and you, and I said this last night, God has given each and every 1 of you talents.

We have a talented group of people here today.

And because God has given you talents and it might not be public speaking, it might be music, it might be teaching, it might be hospitality, whatever it may be, God is calling everyone here to be a leader for him.

If you had to choose, let's say you walked up to a table And you saw some tools on it and you had to choose, well, this is the thing to use in life to be successful as a leader.

And on the table are 2 things, a staff or sword, which would you choose?

Now I think that weaponry is kind of cool.

Hey, there are some sword slingers out there.
