Creation: A Bible Study

Just before I went to Minnesota, there was a Time magazine that came to my house.

I don't think it's really a good thing to read a lot of magazines.

But this 1 caught my attention because there was an article about the danger of fundamentalism, talking about religion.

The man who was writing it indicated that there is on 1 hand atheism, there is on the other hand fundamentalism that takes everything in here exactly how it reads and believes whatever it says.

And then there's a rational position of moderate religion, kind of central.

He was saying that fundamentalism is the cause of the world's serious problems.

Fundamentalist Muslims are the ones who are becoming terrorists.

Fundamentalist Christians are the ones who would like to...

You know, the ones who kill abortion doctors, for example.

Then, when I got back from my 3 week trip, I had another Time Magazine and I just read the letter section.

And you know there was a letter responding to that article.

And The letter said that according to the author, taking the Bible exactly as it reads is bad, believing it somewhat with a grain of salt is good.

And the author said can we only take this 1 step further and say that no belief is best?

I never wrote a letter to Time Magazine before.

But if I did, it would go something like this.

Secular humanism was the religion Secular humanism was the religion behind Marxism and communism.

And though you can find people that had serious beliefs that have done terrible things, You can find people that had moderate belief that did terrible things.

That, for example, would be Hitler, who encouraged Lutheranism.

And you can find people like Lenin and Stalin who had no belief at all that did terrible things.

It's not the religion that makes men do terrible things.

Do you follow what I'd be trying to indicate in that letter?

But it's a trick of the devil, this whole process, to lead people to doubt the words of Scripture.

And the people I know who take this Bible just as it reads and have been born again aren't the ones who are causing this world's problems.

Turn with me in your Bibles to 2 Corinthians.

What I'm speaking about this morning is the idea of creation in Scripture.

It says, Therefore, If any man be in Christ Jesus, he is a new...

We've come to think of the word creature kind of as a synonym for animal.

But the word creature is very related to the word creation.

If we do not believe that God has the power to create, at least according to the New Testament, we don't believe He has the power to remake a life, because these are the same power.

If any man is in Christ Jesus, he is a new creature.

If I could speak so briefly on this point before we begin going into a Bible study.

We'll spend most of our time in the Bible this morning.

Those in the centrist position that I described, their view is that religion is a good thing if you don't take it too seriously.

If evolution is the way that God has brought life up to its current level of existence, which came first?

The sin of man or death, disease, and pain?

Sin certainly came first in the Bible view.

What would come first in the evolutionary view?

Pain and death would come before Adam and Eve, before the fall of man.

Then who's the author of pain and suffering and the kind of tragedies that happen in the backwoods every day.

But in the evolutionary view, it's God's chosen method of development and it would lie squarely on Him.

Not the curse that is here because of what Adam and Eve have done, but God organized things this way.

But I told you we'll spend most of our time in the Bible, we will.

Turn with me in your Bible to Genesis chapter 2.

Genesis chapter 2 and looking at verse 3.

It says, It says, And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he had rested from all his work, which God created and made.

I just want you to gather 1 idea from this verse, and that is God's employment.

If you're a plumber, you rest from plumbing on Sabbath.

If you are a shoemaker, you rest from making shoes.

Then what kind of creation is He doing today?

Well, our very first verse talked about it.

It says, "...this shall be written for the generation to come, and the people..." What does it say?

"...which shall be created shall praise the Lord." So, God created Adam and Eve, but did God create Eugene and R.G.

Certainly, according to the psalm, It wasn't just Adam and Eve.

It says, Drop down, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness.

Let the earth open and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together.

It's a metaphor, the whole verse, but it's 1 that was illustrated by our children's sermon If you were listening to the children's sermon what you heard is that God in the human heart causes something beautiful to grow In that illustration dirt represents something the plant represents something rain represents something This verse is just the children's sermon for adults.
