It Helps to Call It Sin

Now I've been accused of talking fast and I've tried to slow down yesterday, but today I only have 35 minutes so I'm going to be talking fast, okay?

Father, we thank you so much for this privilege of being able to come before you on this beautiful Sabbath day.

We thank you for the testimonies and the songs, and as we approach this delicate topic, I pray that your Holy Spirit may be with me, may we be with those who are listening here today and by television and radio.

Thank you for this opportunity, and we just praise your name.

Carl Menninger, a psychiatrist, of a man standing on a busy Chicago street.

He stood there solemnly and as people would walk by, the person nearest to him, he would point to them and say, guilty.

He would stand there for a little while longer and another person would walk by near to him and he'd point and say, guilty.

The people would look at him, they'd look at other people, they'd look away and then they'd scurry along.

We laugh, but every single 1 of us sitting here today are guilty.

We're guilty of sins, brothers and sisters.

And you might be wondering, why would a psychologist be talking about sin?

Well, I wish I could take the credit, but I can't.

I read a book, probably about 2 months ago, no, it was more than that, maybe 6 months ago, written by a psychiatrist who I don't think is a Christian at all.

And the title of the book was, Whatever Became of Sin.

I thought that was very interesting and as I read through the book, I said to myself, you know, this sin problem is 1 that the enemy has also used that's developed into other areas as well.

You'll be reading it on the screen, and it says, it, meaning sin, was a word once in everyone's mind, but now rarely ever heard.

Wrong things are being done, we know, but is no 1 responsible?

Anxiety and depression we all acknowledge and even vague guilt feelings, but has no 1 committed sins?

Isn't it interesting that a non-Christian psychiatrist would be talking about this, brothers and sisters?

We may mention it here and there, even though the Bible says we've all sinned and done what?

You know, we throw that phrase around and we say it, but do we really realize that?

And we look through the Bible, we see that God wasn't afraid of sin.

He would ask questions, like in the Garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve took the fruit, he came and asked questions, did he not?

We have Nathan appearing to David, giving him the parable, and David realized he was incriminating himself.

Even Jesus, we talk about how loving Jesus was and compassionate, but even Jesus didn't stay away from talking about sin.

The woman at the well, before he gave her more information, he says, yeah, not only is this husband not yours, but you've had 5 husbands before this and Then the woman who was almost stoned he was gracious and compassionate with her But then he said what go in sin no more and then the man that he healed at the pool And then afterwards he saw him later, he said, sin no more lest a worse thing come upon you.

So God was not afraid of dealing with sin, but we are.

And we know the general definition for sin, it is what?

Sin is the transgression of the law, 1 John 3, 4.

And I'm not making fun of that, but that's, we know that, we can quote that.

James 4, 17 says that he that knows to do good and do it not, it is what?

And not only is sin doing bad things, sin is also when we don't do the things we should do.

Isaiah talks about cease to do evil and learn to do when we don't do good, when we don't help our brothers and sisters that are less fortunate.

These are the things that we're staying away from and Dr.

Now there are a few things that I think that have contributed to us getting to this point where we don't want to talk about sin.

The enemy, number 1, doesn't want us to talk about it.

He wants to keep us deceived because if he can keep us deceived and we don't talk about sin, we won't go to the Savior looking for help.

This is a quote you will read with me on the screen that the enemy talks about when that's focused on when we talk about sin.

It is Satan's studied plan to clothe sin with garments of light to hide its deformity and make it what?

And if he makes it attractive we won't talk about it as sin brothers and sisters.

The other thing that I see happening is that we're fearful of offending people.

Now I'm not saying and encouraging us to offend people on purpose but sometimes This fear of offending makes us careful of pointing things out.

And this is happening even in our dear church, Christian church, and the Seventh-day Adventist church.

But this woman, who was actually a Catholic, I don't know what exactly, a theologian or something.

And this is what she said in regards to offending.

The language in mainline churches is about church growth and outreach.

Many of these churches are losing members and they cannot afford language that might put people off.

People do not want to hear about sin and repentance, people want to hear about what?

Not just grace and forgiveness, but also sin and repentance.

We also are hesitant in talking about sin because we fear we're gonna make the wrong judgments about people.

And we should be hesitant about that, but sometimes in our fear of making the wrong judgments, we may miss something.

Mohammed Atta, I don't know if I'm pronouncing his name well, but he was the mastermind behind September 11th, 2001.

He came into an office in Florida, and he wanted a loan to buy these crop dusters.

He got angry at the woman and said, what about if I went behind the desk and slit your throat?

Then she had an aerial picture of Washington and he started asking her questions about the security with Washington and he also did some other things.

And she was so nice to him and didn't say much.

She was interviewed on 1 of these programs, I think ABC News Tonight or 1 of the others.

In this book I mentioned earlier about, Remember I mentioned yesterday the book 1 Nation Under Therapy?

The psychiatrist talks about it in there, about how Americans have gotten so nice and don't want to talk about and point out what's wrong.

And the woman said on the show, why didn't you address this thing?
