The Adventist Health Message: A Key to Optimal Witness & Spiritual Health

Father in heaven, we thank you that you've given us this privilege of fellowshipping with you today.

Please bless us in this meeting that we would thank your thoughts, that we would be guided by heaven in my speaking, in our thinking, in our interaction, we ask in Jesus' name.

Well, as I begin this morning, I want to bring you greetings from Weimar Center of Health and Education.

Many of you have been regular attendees at ASI, you know of Weimar well, But we've been around for over 30 years in northern California.

Most of you know us for our 18-day intensive lifestyle change program.

We still have people coming from all over the world to focus on natural health principles and address health-related issues.

But our newest program, or 1 of our newest programs, I've got to be careful because a lot of new things are happening at Weimar.

1 of our newest programs is called Health, Health evangelism and leadership training for him.

And actually, the director of the program was here a few moments ago, Don McIntosh.

But he's rushed off, actually, to bring some flyers.

If you're not familiar with health, we're equipping people to be more effective health leaders at a local church level.

We have people from physicians to nurses to academy graduates showing up on our campus, a whole cross section of people that really looks a lot like the Seventh-day Adventist church.

And these folks are going out and making a difference in communities.

I was just in Lansing, Michigan, with 4 of our graduates who are working with campus.

They're working with that ministry there, and they're doing health evangelism there across the street from Michigan State University.

And I was thankful to see how they're reaching people through health coaching and health seminars.

This is the kind of work that we're training people to do in that four-month program.

Don McIntosh will be sitting next to him.

So if you're looking for information about WEMAR and some of our programs, It'll be back there toward the back of the room.

Something else I want to tell you about that I'm excited about here at ASI is the Amen Luncheon.

And I don't know how excited to be because I don't actually think I can be there, but I've been to many of the Amen meetings and Amen luncheons.

And Amen is the Adventist Medical Evangelism Network.

This is a network of physicians, dentists, and other like-minded people who are coming together looking for ways to more effectively incorporate evangelism into their practices and into their community outreach.

How many of you who are health professionals have never heard of Amen?

And if you're a health professional, especially, Rebecca has some of the flyers about the luncheon.

Now, this is a popular event, and someone was telling me it was filled.

So do you have some of the flyers if some people want those?

And they should come back, or do you want to pass them out if there's interested folks?

Rebecca has been a member of the Amen team for many years, and she'll get that information to you.

Well, in just a minute, we're going to move into the presentation for the day.

And that is the Adventist health message, a key to optimal witness and spiritual health.

And I can see a number of you have been following good health practices because you're keeping your arm raised for a long time.

Well, let's begin with asking a question.

I like to start presentations with questions, because I want you to be engaged, and I want you to be thinking about what's going on.

Rebecca, if we don't get a chance to interrupt the lecture again, why don't you put them back by the water there?

Or on the back table, so they'll be on the back table.

So has anyone ever asked you to perform a task that was already completed?

Has anyone ever asked you to perform a task that was already completed?

Your response could be, well, hey, I'm almost kind of proud of yourself.

You know, here's someone asking me to do something.

But you could also be insulted, couldn't you?

Or they think they needed to tell me to do that?

But there is a question in the Bible, actually an implied question, that most of us from our cultural perspective never think that it must have come across to the children of Israel like a request to perform a task that was already completed.

I want you to turn your attention to a very familiar verse.

It's found in Exodus chapter 25, verse 8.

And God there says, let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.

Now, if you were traveling with the children of Israel, might you have asked this question?

Or you wouldn't even ask the question, because if you had left Egypt with the children of Israel, you would have had this experience.

It says, the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them the way.

He took not away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night from before the people." How many of you traveled some distance to come to ASI?

How many of you had a pillar of cloud or a pillar of fire guiding you?

Would you have had any question that the Lord was guiding you here if that experience was yours?

I mean, I think most of us believe the Lord brought us here.

But could you imagine, I mean, how could there be any question?

If someone pulled you aside and said, are you really sure you're supposed to be here at ASI?

Don't you think you should be at your home church?

And you would say, you don't realize how I got here.

I mean, there was this pillar of cloud that guided me all the way to the ASI Convention.

If God was visibly leading them, why would he say, let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them?

Well, if you look at a more modern translation, it seems to capture the essence of the Hebrew a little bit better because as the English Standard Version renders it, let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell in their midst, in the middle of the encampment.

And so if you look at a schematic diagram, whether you like my schematic diagram or not, of the Israelite encampment, you had the 12 tribes arranged around a central focal point, which was the tabernacle.

By the way, students of antiquity tell us that this was not an original design with God.

If you had been living in Egypt, if you were a member of Ramesses II's war party, if you will, part of his military, you would have seen that Ramesses II was right in the middle of the encampment with all the armies encircling him.

He was speaking to the people in a language they could understand.

Intentional Health Evangelism

Why don't we just begin with a word of prayer?

Lord, we just thank you so much for the privilege of being here.

We thank you that we can be indoors and we're not outdoors right now trying to give this as maybe Ellen White might have done 150 years ago.

Lord, I just ask that your words be my words, and that the passion that I have for health evangelism can shine out, and that we can gain insight, and we can gain a passion for what you consider so critical to the gospel message.

And Lord, I ask that you just help me to be humble and take anything away from me.

You know, as an Adventist church, we have traditionally been very involved in health education.

Our church is known for health education.

And if you look at the pure word of health education, I tell my students, what is the end result of health education in the community?

We have allowed sinners to live longer in their sin.

Or have we in fact done them a disservice?

And I maintain that if you only health educate, you do them a disservice because they stay in their misery longer.

Intentional health evangelism is you intentionally intend when you talk to your neighbor about a health subject, your intention is that they will be your neighbors in heaven.

We have traditionally said, well, don't tell them what church, you know, tell them, well, we're 1 of the Christian communities, but you know, here in the town, you know, you beat around the bush.

I'm a Seventh-day Adventist, and I'm very proud to be a Seventh-day Adventist, and we have a heritage of health within the Seventh-day Adventist church.

And I make no bones about it because I'm intentional about what I plan to do.

And when you give health subjects, you need to be intentional in what you do.

I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself, because many of you may not know who I am, so I'm going to just give you a little bit.

I'm going to just tell you, you know, I'm actually a very proud member of ASI.

I'm an organizational member of ASI, have been so for 14 years, and I love this organization.

Life and Health is a media arm of AMEN, which is Adventist Medical Evangelism Network.

We're a separate entity now, but I am president of that organization, kind of shepherd it along, and we're going to show you some of the products and materials that we are providing to deliver the health message so that you can be intentional about what you do.

And for you who don't know what Army Bible Camp is, I can tell you that we're coming to Florida this December.

And if any of you, most people in this room are probably not Floridians.

Elder Gary Thurber, who's the president of the Rocky Mountain Conference, came and he said, you know, this room, this very room that we're in, was the room that was used for the Desmond Ford issue.

This very room was here for the creation summit.

He goes, I'm just very glad that Army Bible Camp is here.

We can have an opportunity where the Holy Spirit can fill people.

And I can tell you that lives were changed there.

On Sabbath we had 409 people in that facility, probably the largest group that campus ever had.

To give you an idea, and we hate to judge what response comes from the people there, we often use money as a monetary gauge, but we told them we collected an offering and we said we need $56, 000 to get us to our next camp, which is in Florida.

So from now till then to pay off some of our expenses we need $56, 000.

We did a follow up offering on Sunday and this was before the most amazing message that Ivor Meyer gave for kind of conviction at the end.

This was kind of just after the morning devotional.

If we would have asked for 56, he would have probably said, okay, I'll give you 56 if that's all you want.

We said we need 56, but if you give us more, we'll expand.

I actually am on the board member of Eden Valley, a lifestyle center in Colorado.

I teach in their School, which is called The Well.

I actually also teach at New Start Global, which is the Health Evangelism School, which Elder McIntosh, here on the front row, he's going to tell you a little bit later on.

But I just want to tell you a little personal story that happened to me recently.

About 13 months ago, we decided to move from Ukiah, California, which is over on the coast, to Weimar because I wanted to be closer to school because I really like teaching, and I was being more involved at Weimar.

So we just thought we would move our family.

But we couldn't find a place to live on the, it's the interstate 80 corridor.

We found some better values over by Placerville, which is 40 minutes away.

And we had seen this house and my wife said, I don't care what that house costs.

She didn't say it's rat infested or vermin.

She goes, what would we do when our friends, you know, how do we, you know, what are we going to say?

We looked with that house for 4 months and I kept, you know, the price kept coming down and finally we had to move through some other circumstances and so we ended up buying this house.

6, 000 square feet, built by a master craftsman And I'm just going to tell you some numbers, only because this is praise to God, because of what happened.

The insurance company appraised it because we had a replacement cost rider.

The insurance company appraised it at $2.4 million.

So after a year, we felt that we needed to move.

We needed to move for a number of reasons.

Probably primary, if you saw my children, my boys, they're very proud of this house.

They tell their friends, you know, oh you should come see our house, you know, and they kind of brag about it.

I told Tammy, my wife, I said, it would be better if we lived in a tent, because our job as parents is the conversion of our children, not to put them in a nice bedroom.

It would be better for us to be in a tent.

So we decided to sell the house and really try to move over to Weimar.

And she said, I think you can sell it for 1.3 million.

And in this economy, folks, But you have to find a buyer.

She goes, it's going to take 8 months, and there's only 5 people are going to qualify within 10 mile radius that can buy this in the next year.

Weighty Challenges to the Adventist Health Message

Well, it looks as though we're ready technically as well.

Why don't we have a word of prayer before we start?

Our Father in heaven, we thank you so much for giving us a chance to meet today.

And we ask that what we discuss will be looked upon through the eyes of heaven.

That you'll help us to see more clearly what's going on in this vast field of medicine and health through the issues of obesity.

You said when 2 or 3 are gathered in your name that you're here.

So we claim that promise now, Lord, in Jesus' name.

I am going to start with a little question.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to think with me for a little bit as I ask the following questions.

If by chance, yes, if by chance you were to find yourself in a place tomorrow where disease is conquered by medical science.

If longevity for at least, Now I'm hearing it myself.

For at least 300 to 500 years, you will be alive, and it's guaranteed.

And if you were to have renewable body parts assured, And if you can be placed in suspended animation, so that if you happen to have an accident or something like that, and you need something, but it's not readily available, you'll be put to sleep, only to be awakened sometime later when the materials are there and everybody's ready to take care of you and bring you back online.

If all of these things were to happen then, then why would you want to follow a healthy lifestyle?

If you can eat, drink, and be merry, and tomorrow you wouldn't die, what then?

I would like you to take just 1 minute and speak to the person next to you and see if you can come up with an answer as to why you would want to live a healthy life.

I figured, you know, the smart people sit up front, right?

But they say sometimes the smarter people sit in the back.

Can I have an answer from this side, and I'll take 1 answer from this side?

Because God asked you to, and you love him.

You guys, whether you like it or not, that's the answer.

Maybe the quality of our life would be better regardless of the quantity.

Okay, so he's looking at quality of life.

If that would be better, then live a healthy lifestyle to have a higher quality.

Now, we're gonna talk about obesity, and we're gonna find out some things about obesity, and we're gonna look at some potential solutions that have been, well, at least exposed by some researchers and personalities.

And I would like you to keep in mind the question that you just discussed with your colleague next to you as we're going through and seeing some of the issues.

Now I want to start as well with some disclaimers.

The first 1 is about fitness and fatness.

There is a growing body of evidence, no pun intended, that suggests that how fat you are is not the major issue, but how fit you are is the issue.

What they have done is with statistics, they have been able to tease out some of the other factors.

And what a large study has shown, over 4, 000 people, what it showed was that if you take away all of the other risk factors that we know to be confounders, that really most of the issue regarding Fatness is really an issue of fitness.

So that if you happen to be fat but fit, you'll do fine.

But this is something and we're not going to go into that.

The next thing is we're not going to discuss today the width of heaven's door.

Now, by that I mean heaven's doors are large enough that saved fat people can get in and they don't have to go in sideways all right okay we believe that don't you okay we have 1 person here who doesn't believe it, William, we can talk afterwards, okay?

But why I say it's a disclaimer is because I don't want to deal with that issue here, alright?

The third thing is I won't deal with the issue of overeating.

Even though I want to remind you that the Bible is clear, not saying that the obese will not inherit the kingdom, but it says that gluttons won't go to heaven.

I mean that's pretty clear, but we're not going to discuss that either during the course of our talk today.

So don't ask me any questions about it later on.

Apart from Christ, a healthy person is just a sinner with longevity.

We're going to look at the context of obesity and get to this point.

Look at what Time Magazine said about the guy on the left, or the question they asked.

And I thought that That was a wild beard.

My wife, on the other hand, would not have me come home looking like that.

But the beard notwithstanding, This man is a guru in health today.

Medical people go to his center to learn from him how to help people live long and live well.

And the guy on the right, do you know him?

Now that's a that's a full question if I ever heard 1.

Now the man on the right, he has moved away from just physical medicine, and he has gotten into spiritual medicine.

As a matter of fact, in 1 of his first, and perhaps his most famous book, about 1 third of the book roughly dealt with Zen Buddhism in a modern sense.

These men are listened to and followed by many people today.

Welcome to the seminar, Applying What We Already Know.

So many times when we go to a seminar, we want to learn more information, get new ideas.

Well, you'll get that, but it's not in the general sense that I normally give lectures or presentations.

I'm currently a professor in the Health Sciences Department at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.

And just to kind of give you a little update here, college professors are used to taking 16 weeks to explain their subject, right?

And you get 50 minutes or 75 minutes, either 2 or 3 days a week.

I love teaching because if you didn't close the loop Last time, you can bring it back on the next visit.

Well, today, this is a one-shot wonder right here.

So I'm going to try to jam in some information that will be helpful to you and also practical in helping, in the spirit of ASI, sharing this information with other people and helping other people.

So as we get started, why don't we pause for a word of prayer?

Father, we're so thankful that we're fearfully and wonderfully made.

And as we've come together here, You say that we're 2 or 3 come together.
