Jesus the Great Cleanser

Now this morning, I'd like to share with you something I found this last week.

There are 2 large masses of ever-accumulating trash known as the Western and Eastern Pacific Garbage patches.

Sometimes collectively called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The Eastern Garbage Patch floats between Hawaii and California.

Scientists estimate the size to be as large as twice the size of Texas.

I mean, anybody who comes from Texas thinks 1 size of Texas is pretty big.

The western garbage patch forms east of Japan and west of Hawaii.

Each swirling mass of refuse is massive and collects trash from all over the world.

Our Bible text for this morning is Malachi 3 verses 2 and 3.

Some of the other texts we look at this morning, I will just read them because I've written them in my notes.

But who may abide the day of his coming who shall stand when he appears for he is like every finest fire and like full of soap you've heard of full of brush big company cleansing that's all they're interested in selling cleansing products And he shall sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi, that's you and me I hope, and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the Lord an offering of righteousness.

The food we eat, we go organic, we go here and there, read labels, we don't want to get poisoned.

The air we breathe, polluted, we don't know what all kinds of diseases we suffer from, the polluted air.

We don't like to drink what's in the tap.

When I come back from the hospital, I wash my hands.

Before I go, I like to wash my hands, too.

After I spend some time shaking hands with people here and there, Sabbath, after church, I go home, wash my hands.

The hearts already been washed, but the hands, you know, in church.

The milk we drink, the vegetables, the good stuff that vegetarians eat, you know?

My sister died several years ago, And she studied very much the cause of her ailment, leukemia.

And she was convinced that it was toxic, blood cells, the cleaning fluids, pesticides, and all these things that surround us.

Now, not everyone comes down with leukemia, but because the body's made in different ways, we have ways of shaking it and putting up with many of these things.

But you know, I was thinking, Were it not for modern medicine and the grace of the Lord, life on this planet would e'er this been extinct.

Now, However, the worst pollution is not what I mentioned so far.

The worst pollution is that which sin has caused.

And I guess the cause of all pollution is sin.

But especially the sin that's found in the human heart, and I like to read a text in 2nd Timothy 3 verses 2 and 3, and you can just listen.

It says, Men in the last days shall be lovers of their own selves, sin causes, and covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, Truth breakers, false accusers, and here's 1 that really hits low, despisers of those that are good.

They're called bad names so they can be discarded.

We are so surrounded and immersed in pollution that we're in danger of accepting a certain level of comfort in all this pollution.

How a holy, pure, and righteous God must recoil at this great evil on this planet.

And I tell you what, it was a sacrifice just to come to this planet, had he never died.

Have you ever gone to a home somewhere where you felt very uncomfortable.

As a pastor, you have to do that, and you tell the people you didn't come to see the home, you came to encourage the people, right?

Ran to 1 home in the Midwest years ago, my first district, and they were somewhat health-oriented.

And so an elderly gentleman, and I was a young man, 25 years of age, visiting these interests, said, Pastor Ruski, We have a special health drink.

As I looked around, I saw little teepees of dirt on the floor here and there that had never been picked up.

I saw the dishes in a pool of scum in the sink.

You know how the scum kind of forms on top?

And, no, hopefully you don't, because it takes a long time to accumulate this, you know, several days probably.

And then he gets a little cup out of that and kind of wipes it a little dry, And then he goes to the blender and he puts in some carrots and various things.

And the bitter end of the carrots, I remember tasting that.

And then 1 good thing, he only brought a small glass like this size.

I was glad it was not 8 ounce or 10 ounce.

Because III, this old way, put some bananas in, it was a nice slimy mess.

And, and so he said, drink it, Aldo Roski, see what you think of my health drink.

I tell you what, I had a deep breath, and my partner was over there.

And we drank and I thought, now, how do I handle this?

Drink it as fast as you can because the agony will be short.

Sometimes you say something that has 2 meanings, you know.

Can you imagine how a holy God feels entering this planet.

And that's why God has set in motion a great and most costly cleansing process he calls salvation.

By giving the life of his Son and the blood of his dearly beloved to become the cleansing fluid for this planet and its inhabitants to take care of the pollution that sin has caused.

In Malachi Jesus is called the great refiner's fire and the fuller's brush And he will wash what can be washed.

And he will purify gold and silver with fire.

God loves his people, God loves all the people.

It is the refining process for eternal happiness.

Now I see 3 incidents in the life of Jesus, especially, there are others too, but I like to pick on 3 this morning that illustrates his great desire for cleansing.

The first 1 begins 4 or 5 months after Christ's baptism.

It's found in John 2, chapter 13 through 17, Christ's first Passover in his ministry.

He comes to Jerusalem with his disciples.
