Dealing with Rejection

Today we're going to have a Bible study on the idea of what it should take to make us content.

Contentment is the opposite in some ways of discouragement.

We talked just a few days ago about courage.

Courage is another opposite of discouragement.

Discouragement is when you're low on courage, and when you're not content.

I mean, you're down, because you don't have what you want.

Hebrews chapter 13, and we're looking at verse 5.

Let your conversation be without covetousness.

The word means something more than your speech.

Which is more likely to be full of covetousness, your speech or your way of living?

Your way of living is something that tends to be more full of covetousness.

Let your way of living be without covetousness and be content with such things as you have.

Why should you and I be content with such things as we have?

I for example have a laptop that is twice as heavy as most of yours.

Should I be content with such things as I have?

It says, "...for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." You know, this promise, it looks like it's quoted from somewhere else in the Bible, but it isn't directly quoted from anywhere else in the Bible.

Jesus said, Lo, I'm with you always, even unto the end of the world.

But here's the promise, I will not forsake thee.

How is that promise related to covetousness?

The reason I shouldn't be covetous is because he promised that he's going to be with me, that he's not going to forsake me.

In other words, here I have some things, but besides these things, I have the accompaniment of the Lord Jesus.

And now if I compare myself to others, they might have more things, but if they don't have the coming of the Lord Jesus, who has more?

And if they have it also, then we have the same, because nothing else is of any value comparatively.

I should be content with such things as I have because I have Jesus with me.

Verse 6, so that we may boldly say the Lord is my helper and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

These 2 verses are so related to canvassing.

For 1 thing, when you talk about such things as we have, today at about 4.45 in the afternoon, you're going to have a certain number of books out, Or 0.

Should you be content with such things as you have?

Why should you be content with such things as you have?

Because He promised, I will never leave you nor forsake you.

When you have it in your mind, that idea, it allows you to be content.

And contentment is great gain when it comes with Godliness.

What can we say because He's not going to leave us?

And just before you say that, what else might you say?

You can say this any time today, you can say, the Lord is my helper.

Keeping that thought in mind should do a lot to take away your thoughts of incompetence or inability or anything related to that.

When you say that, you don't want to say that kind of like this, The Lord is my helper.

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper.

I will not fear what man can do to me." What is it that people tend to fear?

If we forget that God is with us, that He will not forsake us, that he is our helper, we become at the mercy of a pretty cruel world.

They might require us to leave our house if we don't pay our bills.

They might refuse to give us food if we don't have cash to buy it.

But we don't, most of us, fear about not having housing or having food.

We mostly fear what people will think about us, which of course is proof that we live in America.

I want to take these ideas in just these 2 verses and then look at 1 of them expanded.

The ideas are that my life should not be full of covetousness.

I don't want to live as if my happiness comes from the things I get or have.

Instead, I want to speak and act as if my contentment comes from the fact that I have help.

That I have the right help from the right place, and that that help is going to be with me and it's never going to leave me.

I'm never going to be abandoned by my help.

The security of help that's not going to leave me.

Because of that, I can boldly say, I'm not afraid what man's going to do.

Matthew chapter 10 has 2 passages, probably more than that, but 2 that I'm thinking of that are particularly relevant to canvassers.

1 of them is verse 20 where it says, For it is not you that speak, but the spirit of your father which speaketh in you.

If your question is, What kind of help does my helper give when my helper helps me?

What kind of helper would your helper give when your helper helps you?

That is, he could determine the words that come out of your mouth when you don't really know what to say.

And did he say that he was going to do that, he was going to help you sometimes?

He will never leave you, he will never forsake you.

But really where I want to look here is in verse 25 it is sufficient for the disciple that he be like his master and the servant as his Lord If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

It talks about a servant, and we are the servants, and a Lord, and that's the Lord Jesus.

It illustrates by in the world, if you have a servant and a Lord, if the Lord lives in a wealthy palace, the servant might not be satisfied unless he has shoes and shirt and socks and pants.

Because there's a certain amount a servant will want if his lord has a great deal.

But if you come to a different situation in this same planet where the master doesn't have a shirt and lives in a hut, Is the servant going to demand a shirt and a nice mattress to sleep on?

The servant is not going to be demanding more than his master.
