The Hour of Victory- Part 1

Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for your Son Jesus Christ.

We thank you for the calling to be overcomers and we pray right now that as we look into finding victory, how we can find victory, how you want to give us the victory through Jesus, that your presence would be here.

Now, obviously I don't know all of you, and you don't know me, most of you anyway, But what I can say is this, I'm gonna be sharing this a little bit differently with you than I might with just any individual seminar that we would do because I'm figuring most all of you are Christian.

So I'm gonna be sharing a little bit more in detail some things than we would with the general public.

But in general these are some some of the things that we share and some of the principles here you can actually learn to implement with friends or people who you may meet and may also help them.

So this is a seminar that it may be for you personally or it may be as a help to somebody else who may be struggling with Some kind of negative habit now the reality is this it's not just people out in the world You know who struggle with different addictions you may say well, I don't struggle with alcohol I don't struggle with tobacco Maybe you do but the reality is this we all have at some point in our lives some kind of negative Habits some habits that are we know that we don't want to continue in these things, but we struggle to overcome them.

So we want to find, how do I find the victory?

I'm gonna share with you a text in the book of 1 Corinthians.

If you have your Bibles, you can turn with me to 1 Corinthians, chapter 6.

1 Corinthians, chapter 6, and to me, this is an absolutely powerful verse.

Number 1, it shows you that the church that was in the days of Paul, Paul wrote the book of Corinthians and he's writing to the church in Corinth.

And we're gonna look and we're gonna notice that the people of Corinth struggled with the very same temptations that people struggle with in Linz, Austria, in France, in Germany, in the United States.

The same struggles that people struggle with today they were struggling with back 2, 000 years ago.

So we're looking at 1 Corinthians 6 and verse 9, and this is a very heavy verse, 2 verses here.

Verse 9 says, Do you not know, or don't you know, that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?" And then he says, don't be deceived, neither fornicators, I'm going to read through them quickly and then we'll go back through and try to figure out what these things are.

He says, Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God.

And you may not, these are not common words.

These are not, I mean, we don't use, I mean, young people don't walk around the United States using words like this in Great Britain typically.

And so we're gonna try to break down, Paul has a list of sins, and he says, if people are committing these sins, they're not going to inherit the kingdom of God.

What's it mean you're not gonna inherit the kingdom of God?

Yeah, simply, it means You're not going to go to heaven, right?

It means you're not going to go to heaven.

Now when we, let's look a little bit more clearly within the text here and what does it say?

He says, he says, don't you know the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

When I say don't be deceived what am I telling you?

Don't let anybody lead you away from the truth.

Now the word fornicator in the original Greek is a word, the Greek word is pornos.

Pornos, which we get the word obviously, pornography.

Now, obviously they didn't have pornography, they didn't have the internet, they didn't have magazines at that time, but it was fornication, it was sexual relations before marriage.

If someone is having sexual relationships before marriage, according to the text, it says they're not going to inherit the kingdom of God.

Now we know that we can repent and God can forgive us, but if we are choosing to live a sexually active lifestyle Before we are married, Paul says simply, don't let anybody trick you, you will not inherit the kingdom of God.

And then he goes on to say, nor idolaters.

Now obviously, there's more than just worshiping an idol.

You can also care so much about a car, an automobile.

You could care so much about a maybe a job that you put the job above God.

Meaning the job may be in conflict with what you know to be right, but you so want to make the money that it becomes like an idol to you.

So that's another way of being an idolater.

Now an adulterer, obviously there's different forms of adultery, but 1 of the most obvious ways is having sexual relations with someone that you are not married to.

Meaning you may already be married or the other person is married and you're having sexual relations.

But Jesus also told us that if a man, do you remember?

If he, yes, if he looks upon a woman with lust in his heart, he has what?

And then it goes on to say, nor effeminate is the word the old King James uses, and then it says nor abusers of themselves would mankind.

The newer translations just say it clearly, they say nor homosexuals.

It says homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God.

So for stealing, we will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Nor covetous, meaning if you're constantly wanting, desiring things that others have or own, wishing you had that man's wife, wishing you had that girl's, I don't know, dress or whatever you might be constantly wanting things of others, it says you'll not inherit the kingdom of God.

It's an old English word for alcoholic, right?

So these kind of people will not inherit the kingdom of God and then it goes on to say, it uses a word that we never use today in English, at least in the States, revilers.

Now a reviler, According to the definition, is someone who uses harsh, how do we say it, something like criticizing people in an abusive manner.

So constantly getting angry at your parents, or constantly getting angry at your boyfriend, or your girlfriend, or your husband, or your wife, or whatever.

Constantly speaking angry, negative things.

It says those people who do that will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Then it goes on to say, nor extortioners.

It's another word we don't typically use, but it is a word you could still use today.

An extortioner is someone who takes money typically by force or threats.

So someone who is obtaining money by force or threats.

And it says these people should not inherit the kingdom of God.

Now when we look at these things you say this is not very hopeful.

Why did I come to a seminar where you just listed off a bunch of terrible things and said if you do these things you're not going to go to heaven?

Now it would seem to be scary because you may look through that list and you say, this is not good.

I see some of my character described on the pages of scripture and it says if I live this lifestyle I am not going to inherit the kingdom of God.

Now let me ask you a question and you can answer with a yes or a no.

Do you think after reading this list of things that do you believe that people today are struggling with the same sins they were struggling with 2, 000 years ago, yes or no?

It's not as if, oh, back in the days of Paul, it was very easy.

1 of the words there, the word effeminate, speaking in the days of Greece and Rome, it was customary, it was quite usual to find men who would have little boys that they would sexually use for their pleasures.

So it's not as if we live in just such drastically different times than people lived 2, 000 years ago.

We have iPads and iPods and computers, but the reality is the same temptations that they struggled with 2, 000 years ago are the same temptations that people struggle with in modern Europe, in the United States, across the planet.

Humanity at the core of us, we are the same.

Yes, things, customs may change, different cultures may be a little different, but temptations are the same.

And so Paul lists all of these things off, and he says, if you're living this lifestyle, you will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Notice with me, you say, this is scary because I see my own sins in this page.

But Paul says some of the most hopeful words in verse 11.

He says, and such were some of you, but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God.

The Hour of Victory- Part 2

All right, well before we begin this message, let's just bow our heads for a word of prayer.

Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for your son Jesus.

We thank you that you sent him to this earth for us to give us victory, to give us eternal life.

And we thank you that in Jesus we can freely receive that life.

Not only life eternal, but we can receive the life here and now that is more abundant than we could ever have any other way.

So we pray for your blessing to be upon us now as we talk about overcoming in the name of Jesus.

Just a quick reminder just because I can see several faces that I didn't see in the first seminar.

But this is a part of what I typically do as a seminar on overcoming habits.

We do it for people within the church, we do it for secular people, we do it for basically anybody who's looking to overcome.

But the point being is this, is that God wants to give us the victory, but he doesn't ask us to find victory so that we can become a Christian.

Do good and then you get to go to heaven.

We talked about, I went into detail, we won't do that, but the Bible teaches that the wages of sin is what?

How many good works do you have to do to get into, to make up for the bad things you've done?

There's no amount of good things you can do that make up for the bad, you understand?

So you have to receive salvation as a free gift from Jesus.

We find victory not to be saved, but rather because we have been saved.

So we're Going into this message now, just so my wife knows, I've added a little bit to this 1, so I'm going to begin and then you're going to come on.

Now I'm going to begin with, here's the reality.

We're going to talk more about, we're going to talk some about the brain, things that affect the brain, but if you don't have, meaning, I'm gonna be real, if you're not having a living relationship with Jesus, all these facts, all these good and the bad for your brain, I mean, it's not gonna so much matter.

You'll have a better brain if you implement some of these things, but the reality is, is we want to have a relationship with Christ, a living relationship.

And I'm going to be honest with you, when I used to study the Bible, I didn't enjoy it.

I'd never heard of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

I wasn't, you know, looking for something, but the Lord opened my eyes to the truth of his word.

And in my mind, I had no other option but to follow him.

If I do, I've got to go wherever he says.

And I had been reading the Bible some but I didn't really enjoy so much reading the Bible, I'll be honest with you.

But it wasn't until the Bible began to come alive to me that it changed my life.

Now I love the scriptures, I love the spirit of prophecy.

I didn't believe in Ellen White in the beginning.

I didn't know any of this stuff, but as I began to study, it totally changed my life, and it's been a blessing.

Jesus said that I wanna give you life, and I wanna give you life more abundantly, and I can say that is true in my own life.

I'm going to give you a very quick description of, for you who maybe your Bible reading isn't very interesting, this is not a seminar on Bible study, but I'm going to share it with you quickly just to hopefully encourage some of you who maybe don't have as lively of a study of God's word as you could.

But here's, I was studying the Bible some years ago, and I was reading in Joshua chapter 1, verse 8.

And God said to Joshua, he said, this book of the law, probably referring to, you know, the first 5 books of the Bible, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

But he said, this book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate therein day and night.

Then shall you make your way prosperous, and then shall you have good success.

So the Bible says if you want to have success in life, and I'm not talking about getting a lot of money in the bank or a nice car or a big house, but if you want to have spiritual success in your life, God said to Joshua, you need to meditate upon his word, How often?

So I looked up the word, I'm no Hebrew scholar, but I got a Strong's Concordance, you can look it up online or whatever, and I looked it up, just what does that word meditate mean?

And so, now to the Hebrews, this word Meditate was very rich, it was a deep word.

We just think meditate, think, you know, or whatever.

But nevertheless, looking up that word, in the Hebrew the word is haggah, haggah.

Now the word has several different definitions, but they all kind of formulate around the idea of meditation.

It's actually a word that's called in English, most people in English wouldn't know what the word means, but it's an onomonopoeia.

And that word basically means a word that makes the sound of the thing that it's talking about.

Like if you throw a spoon against the wall, it goes boing.

That's kind of the noise that it represents.

The word the word haga to the Hebrew was supposed to be the sound that someone made while they were meditating.

Well seemingly to the Hebrews they would think about it so much that they would begin to mutter it out of their mouth.

That's what it was, the Hebrews would think so deeply they would mutter as they were thinking about something.

Typically, Hebrews would memorize large portions of the scripture.

So this word Hebrew, first of all, just simply means to meditate.

So when you're reading the word of God, don't just do a simple overview.

I mean, you can do an overview, that's okay, but dig deeper.

But sometimes it's too much to even dig deeper.

In the beginning, you may just need to just read it through.

But as you're, if you're finding it's just not enough for me, I've just, I've been reading and it's not enough, really begin to meditate.

Yes, My wife is saying to me that the muttering is not just like, they weren't just making like a noise, they were literally, have you ever done that?

You've thought so much about something that it begins to just come out of your mouth.

Maybe you're afraid to say it, but I have.

They'd be thinking so much about the text of Scripture that it would begin to come out of their mouth.

From Health to Him- Part 1

Father in heaven, we are beginning a journey this morning that will be all morning and this afternoon to look at Jesus.

We long to be effective soul winners for you.

We long to go back to our churches and make a significant difference for your kingdom.

And as we look at the lovely Jesus, may we see his pattern of ministry, and may our lives be changed because we have looked at Him.

We thank you so much for the opportunity today to come to study your Word and to have that sense of your presence.

Let me tell you a little bit about class, what we're going to do, and then we'll just launch right into our class.

Beginning this morning, and for 2 hours this morning, and then for 2 hours this afternoon, we're going to look at Jesus' pattern of ministry.

During the first hour, I will introduce that pattern based on Jesus' ministry in the New Testament.

And then right after that, my wife's going to share how to apply those principles and to a local church.

We'll continue that this afternoon and we'll look at the church as a health center.

We'll look at examples of how to make your church everything that God wants it to be.

So thank you very much for joining us and we will launch right into our topic.

Lewis Evans was a medical missionary in the United States, and he had a great desire to lead others to Jesus through his practice.

He took a short-term mission trip and went out to Korea.

He was going to spend about 6 weeks in Korea assisting in medical missionary work.

And he met a colleague of his who was a missionary in Korea, and they traveled way, way back up into the bush.

And this medical missionary friend of Dr.

Evans had been working in this primitive village for many, many years.

Evans was coming on a short-term mission trip, his friend was located there permanently in Korea.

Evans was going to assist his friend in a very challenging stomach operation.

Now, the operation wasn't going to be done in a hospital, because of course there were no hospitals in that primitive village.

The operation was going to be done in a hospital because of course there were no hospitals in that primitive village.

The operation was going to be done in a tent.

And as they began the operation in that tent, the dedicated medical missionary physician, Dr.

Evans' colleague, took his knife and of course he slit the stomach and he began gently working on this woman's stomach.

He worked for 7 hours on this very complicated stomach operation, delicately caring for this old peasant woman.

And as he continued to work, The heat was stifling, the odors were oppressive, but gently, kindly he worked on this old woman.

After 7 hours, the medical missionary took a deep breath, looked at Dr.

Evans and said, Doc, the operation is over.

So they sewed her up, and they went back to this physician's modest office.

Evans looked at him, and he said, I want to know, how much money do you make for an operation like this out here in the bush?

If I operated on a woman like that in my sophisticated hospital with all my technology in the United States, it would be about a $25, 000 operation.

How much do you make out here in the bush for an operation like this?" The seasoned medical missionary had tears in his eyes, and he reached down into his desk drawer and pulled out something from the bottom drawer.

He held up an old, dirty, dented copper coin worth about 25 cents.

Evans, well, the first thing I get is this.

This woman came in here about 2 weeks ago.

I found that she had a very complex disease tumor in her stomach as you saw and that if I didn't operate she would die and She asked me doctor How much is the operation going to cost I have this amount?

And he said I took that old dirty copper coin and I put it in my hand at 25 cents, not $25, 000, and I said, Madam, that is the right price.

So, Doc, the first thing I get for this operation, 7 grueling hours in the oppressive sun, is this old dirty dented copper coin.

But the second thing I get is the conscious awareness that Christ is working through these fingers to heal 1 of his children.

Now when we use the term medical missionary work, it's confusing to a lot of people.

Missionary, that implies that you travel to the far-flung corners of the earth.

I better leave the class and go to another class because I'm not medical missionary.

What is medical missionary work in the New Testament?

What is medical missionary work in the writings of Ellen White?

Simply defined, medical missionary work is this.

It is lovingly meeting the needs of people around you in the name of Jesus because you're concerned about their needs physically, mentally, and spiritually, and you long to lead them to Christ.

We've come to a time, we're told, that every member of the church should take up medical missionary work.

It's lovingly meeting the needs of the people around you.

It's sharing the goodness and the grace of God.

It's looking out of yourself to other people.

Medical missionary work can be as something as simple as making a loaf of bread and a bowl of soup or borscht and taking it to a neighbor that's sick.

Medical missionary work can be as something as simple as going to a person who's depressed and getting your arms around them and telling them that Christ loves them and praying for them.

It can be something like holding a cooking school or a stress management program in a church or getting involved in a health expo.

So medical missionary work is very broad.

It is the loving ministry of Jesus Christ.
