Our loving Heavenly Father, what a privilege it is to come before your throne, the King of the Universe, to present our request to you.

We thank you, Father, that we have your word, this word that keeps us on the straight and narrow, that shows us exactly what is in harmony with your will.

As we speak today about the importance of distinguishing the holy from the common, We ask for the guidance of your Holy Spirit.

Open our hearts and open our minds that we might be willing to receive what you have for us.

And we thank you Father for hearing our prayer for we ask it in Jesus name.

The Bible gives us stories that teach us universal principles that apply in every age.

Now the circumstances of those stories might change, but the principles illustrated by those stories remain eternally.

I'd like to begin by speaking about the conquest of Jericho.

If you go with me to Joshua chapter 6 we're going to read several verses here in this chapter of the book of Joshua that speaks about the conquest of the promised land.

Now when Israel crossed the Jordan the first city that they came to was the city of Jericho And God told them that they should march around the city 7 days and 7 times the seventh day.

And of course when they did that the city was destroyed by God.

Now God had warned the Israelites not to take anything that was in the city for themselves.

I'd like to read Joshua chapter 6 and verse 18 where we are told and you by all means abstain from the accursed things, lest you become accursed when you take of the accursed things and make the camp of Israel a curse and trouble it.

Now that word accursed, at least the time where it is used first and the third time that it is used, is the Hebrew word herem and basically that word is also translated in the Old Testament devoted.

In other words I believe that the best translation is not to abstain from accursed things but abstain from devoted things.

Now allow me to read you another text from the book of Leviticus where this word is translated devoted so that you can see that it is translated devoted in the Old Testament.

Leviticus 27 verse 28 uses the same word Cherem.

It says there, nevertheless no devoted, same word, no devoted offering that a man may devote, there's the same word again, to the Lord of all that he has, both man and beast, or the field of his possession shall be sold or redeemed.

Every devoted, there's the word used for the third time, every devoted offering is most holy to the Lord.

So I believe that in Joshua the better translation is not accursed, the best translation is devoted.

The things in Jericho were devoted or set apart.

Well the book of Joshua tells us for what?

Chapter 6 and verse 19, the very next verse says the following, but all the silver and gold and vessels of bronze and iron are consecrated to the Lord.

They shall come into the treasury of the Lord.

What was the gold and the silver and the bronze to be used for?

It was to come into the treasury of the Lord.

In other words, these things were devoted to whom?

Interestingly enough, in this verse, Joshua 6 verse 19, where it says that they are consecrated to the Lord.

The Hebrew word there is kadash which means to set apart as holy.

Now listen up Jericho was the first city that Israel conquered in the promised land, and because it was the first city that Israel conquered, The goods of the city were God's tithe of the Holy Land.

After that, God gave Israel permission to take of the loot when cities fell.

But when it was Jericho, the things of Jericho were devoted.

They were set apart as holy for the Lord.

Now there was 1 individual whose name was Achan who took some of the gold and some of the silver and hid it under his tent.

Now interestingly enough the sin of Achan was not only the sin of stealing, the sin of Achan was taking what was holy to use for his own secular use.

He was taking the tithe of the law of the land that belonged to the Lord and he was using that which was dedicated to the Lord that which was holy for his common everyday use.

There's 1 thing which is very clear in the Old Testament as well as in the New, and that is that the priests were to teach the people the difference between the holy and the common.

In fact the high priest wore on his forehead a mitre.

And I want you to notice what this mitre said.

Exodus chapter 28 and verse 36 speaks about this mitre or this crown that he used and the inscription that was upon it.

It says here, you shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it like the engraving of a signet, holiness to the Lord.

What was the inscription on the miter of the high priest?

The priests were to teach the people the distinction between the holy and the common.

Let's read another verse where this is made very very clear.

Ezekiel 44 and verse 23 Ezekiel 44 and verse 23.

Here it's speaking about the priests and 1 of the duties of the priests of Israel.

Notice what we are told here and by the way Ezekiel 40 through 48 is speaking about the services of the temple.

It says there, and they, that is the priests, shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the unholy, unholy means simply common, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.

In other words the priests of Israel were to teach the people the distinction between the holy and that which was secular or was common.

You see in Israel there was holy money and secular music.

In Israel there was holy occasions and there were common occasions.

In Israel there were holy vocations and there were common vocations.

And the priests were to teach the Israelites the clear distinction between that which had been dedicated to God, that which was holy, and that which was common.

The Bible tells us that the priests failed miserably in this task.

Ezekiel 22 and verse 26, Ezekiel 22 and verse 26 speaks about the priests and their failure to do this task.

Her priests have violated my law and profaned my holy things.

They have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean.

And they have hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths.

They have hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths so that I am profaned among them.

So I want to underline the fact that the priests were to teach the people clearly the distinction between that which was holy and that which was common.

Now there was 1 thing in the sanctuary which was very holy among other things and that was the incense that was used to burn on the altar of incense or the golden altar.

Exodus 30 verses 7 through 9 speaks about this incense that was to be offered.

Incidentally it was a special formula and no 1 was to duplicate this holy formula.

Because the Bible tells us that if anybody tried to duplicate the formula and use the incense in a secular environment, the sentence was death.

Notice Exodus chapter 30 and verses 7 through 9.

Sweet incense every morning when he tends the lamps.

And when Aaron lights the lamps at twilight, that's in the evening, he shall burn incense on it, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations.

And then it says, you shall not offer strange incense on it.

It means any other kind of incense than the incense that is made with this special formula which is holy and dedicated to God.

Don't you offer any other kind of incense on my altar of incense.

There was a special incense that was holy and it was not to be used as secular, and secular incense was not to be presented as holy before the Lord.

Now the question is what did the incense represent?

Well let's read a few verses from Scripture to see what the incense symbolized.

Psalm 141 and verse 2, Psalm 141 and verse 2.

It says there, let my prayer be set before you as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

So what is incense connected with here in Psalm 141 and verse 2?

This text tells us that the prayer is linked with incense, but there's more to the story.

Go with me to Revelation chapter 8 and verse 3.
