Who Should be Baptized

I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses, And the voice I hear calling on my ear, The Son of God discloses.

And he walks with me and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own, and the joy we share as we carry them.

Where as we tarry there, none of us ever knows, ever knows.

He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet.

His voice is so sweet The birds are still singing And the melody that he gave to me The way that he gave to me, within my heart is ringing.

And he walks with me and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own.

And the joy we share as we care for each other.

Almighty and everlasting Father, who of Thy great mercy did safely lead thy people Israel through the Red Sea, figuring forth thy holy baptism, and by the baptism of thy beloved son in the river Jordan set before us a perfect example.

We pray thee to So prepare our hearts by thy word and thy spirit, that we may walk in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless, bless and protect the forces of freedom, and that civil and religious freedom may prevail.

Heal the broken in heart, bind up their wounds, and bring courage to those who hear this broadcast.

There is a place of quiet rest, near to the heart of God.

A place where sin cannot molest, near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blessed Redeemer, sent from the heart of God, Hold us who wait before Thee.

You know, friends, we don't hear a great deal nowadays about the old folks.

And now, the voice of prophecy with a Bible message for today, Who Should Be Baptized?

In recent broadcasts, we've considered the questions, why should we believe?

And now we come to this question, which naturally follows, who should be baptized?

For the answer, we appeal at once to the word of God.

The terms upon which Christ offers to save men are declared in the Great Commission, which is the authority of Christ before salvation to men through the preaching of the gospel.

These terms were announced by Christ himself and have never been changed.

3 inspired men, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, have recorded the terms of the Great Commission as spoken by Christ to his disciples.

Let us read this threefold testimony of credible witnesses, Matthew 28 and 19 and onward.

Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned." Luke 24, verse 46.

Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem.

Taking all the terms named by these 3 writers, what we have to do is made clear in this great commission.

Notice, as you read these 3 great scriptural passages, the following terms, in Matthew, teaching and baptizing those taught.

In Mark, preaching or teaching and baptism of those who believe.

In Luke, preaching followed by repentance and remission of sins on the part of those who hear.

On the day of Pentecost the Apostle Peter preached with such mighty power that convicted sinners cried out, what shall we do?

And the inspired answer came as recorded in verse 38 of Acts the second chapter, repent and be baptized every 1 of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

From these 4 texts of Scripture we have the answer to our question, who should be baptized?

And it's clearly this, Those who hear the gospel, believe the gospel, and repent of their sins.

In his preaching that day, the apostle taught the people.

He explained the prophecies of the Old Testament which applied to our Savior, and showed them that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

This was teaching that they could understand.

They believed it, and believed it so completely that the word says, when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

They were under great conviction, something very unpopular today, but nevertheless a part of the experience of those who were proper candidates for baptism.

Next came the command of the Apostle, repent and be baptized, verse 38.

Testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks' repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Why is this repentance toward God necessary?

Romans 3, 23, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

In conversion we are born to a new life, born again, as our Lord puts it in John 3.3.

And verse 5 he says, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

In Christ we are to be dead to the old life of sin, as we read in Romans 6, 8.

Now if we be dead with Christ, we shall believe that we shall also live with him.

Now if 1 is dead with Christ, what should be done with him?

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death.

That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism then is a burial that represents our death to sin and our resurrection with Christ to a new life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.

Baptism portrays Christ's death and resurrection.

It shows our faith that if we fall asleep in death, we too shall rise again.

When we see what baptism really means, as in this wonderful sixth chapter of Romans, we shall never have any doubt as to what baptism is.

As to the purpose of baptism, read Colossians 2 12, buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God who has raised him from the dead.

No true believer in Christian baptism can ever doubt the resurrection of Christ, that mighty pillar of Christian faith.

We must never forget the words of the Apostle in 1 Corinthians 15, 12 and onward.

Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
