Teach Us to Pray

Thank you for the privilege that you've given us to come together.

I pray now for your presence to be with us as we talk about the most important subject, prayer, in Jesus' name, amen.

I don't know about you, but when I came into the church, nobody taught me how to pray.

As a matter of fact, when I came back into the church, when I went to prayer meeting, I was fearful that somebody would call on me and say pray because I didn't know how to pray and so we struggled through trying to learn how to pray and then when I became a pastor I said 1 of the things that we really need to teach our people is how to pray.

And so as a result of my experience and then what I saw some of my members going through, I thought it was just necessary to teach people how to pray.

Incidentally, there are 3 platforms to prayer.

Not only do you have to pray in terms of your spiritual growth, not only do you have to pray, but you need to also know how to study the Bible, and you must also know how to witness.

Those 3 things and if you're lacking in any of those 3 areas you are declining in terms of your spiritual growth.

It's not just enough to pray but you also must study the word and you also must witness.

And so we're going to talk about phase 1 in terms of how to pray and that kind of thing.

Before I go any further though, as I was praying and what the Lord gave me to tell you is that the message for these last days, of course you all know is the 3 angels message found in Revelation 14.

But if you study that thing a little further, you understand that the message in Revelation 6, I'm sorry, Revelation 14, 6 through 12, is really a message of righteousness by faith.

As a matter of fact, the servant of the Lord says that the subject of righteousness by faith is indeed the 3 angels' message in verity.

And so, as I was on my knees, I had some prayer partners here, and I'm grateful for those who are here today.

As I was on my knees, the Holy Spirit says, tell them also about righteousness by faith and don't have time to really get into it but as we go through this I'm going to be trying to interject righteousness by faith because it's all about spiritual growth.

As a matter of fact the seminar that I have that the Holy Spirit has allowed me to develop, I do it in 3 sections.

When we begin to talk about prayer, I use the model of the Lord's Prayer.

And not only did I use that model, but I also devised 3 different areas of instruction.

The first part is where I explained the phrase that we need to use, and then secondly, I begin to talk about the mechanics, how to do it.

And then thirdly, I begin to look at what does this mean to me spiritually?

And that's the cutting edge that I'd like to share with you.

I was scheduled to have some handouts and things got into the way.

And so maybe it was good that things got in the way so that you could write.

Now, Did everybody bring some paper and pen?

Now, I'm going to give you, there are a variety of little acronyms that help you to structure your prayer.

But I'm going to give you an acronym that the Holy Spirit gave me.

So this is the acronym that, this is the structure that I want to give you to hang your prayer on, and you don't necessarily have to do it this way, but at least gives you some structure.

Now, there are 5 letters, 5 letters, and it's, I'll tell you, PC, it stands for prayer connection, but it's P-C-P-C-P, and I'll explain that a little later on.

These are the, and what I want you to do, I want you to write this vertically, okay?

Write this vertically, because I'm gonna give you what each of those things mean.

The first letter is P, second letter is C, third letter is P, fourth letter is C, fifth letter is P.

So really, all you have to do is remember those 2 letters and then just repeat it again.

It's, I want you to repeat with me everybody.

And let me give you, OK, next to that, I'm going to let you know what the first P stands for.

The first P stands for prelude, right, prelude.

And I'll give you the corresponding text for that.

I'm gonna give you a quiz, so make sure you write it down.

And then the last P stands for protection and praise.

Alright, so I'm gonna go through this again.

Number 1, what is the acronym that I'm using?

Now, these are, this is a structure that you can hang your prayer on.

So as you begin to pray, these acronym letters then begin to give you an idea of where you should go.

And I'm going to show you in a moment how that works.

And by the way, sometimes you don't necessarily have to have it in that order, but you know that these are some of the elements that are important to having successful prayer.

As a matter of fact, I pulled this, I extracted this from the Lord's Prayer.

So let's go to work and then at the conclusion of my presentation I'm going to review and I'm going to let you know what those phrases are as it relates to each of those letters in the acronym.

There's some things I'm just going to rush through, but there's some things I'm going to really take some time on, and maybe at another time we can pull it all together, but I got to go, so I got to stay within my time limit here.

All righty, now, the definition of prayer, which I think is very, very important.

Prayer is the opening of the heart to God.
