The Bible that Jesus Used

Here now is HMS Richards, the voice of prophecy speaker.

On April 18, 1942, an atheist by the name of Jacob de Schaizer went along as 1 of Jimmy Doolittle's raiders on Japan.

He, with others, was captured and imprisoned by the Japanese.

He saw 2 of his companions shot to death and a third die of starvation.

During the long days and weeks and months that passed, he began to wonder why the Japanese hated him and why he hated them.

He began to think of many things he had learned, of many things he had heard about Christianity.

So 1 day he asked if he might have a Bible.

His captors laughed at him, threatened him, and told him to quit making them so much trouble.

But he kept on asking, and a year and a half later, May 1944, a guard actually brought him a Bible.

As he threw it at him, he said, 3 weeks you have, 3 weeks and no more, and then I take it away.

And sure enough, 3 weeks later, the guard returned and took the Bible away, and de Shazer never saw it again.

4 and a half years later in 1948, de Shazer, the former atheist, his wife and baby were on their way back to Japan as missionaries for Christ.

And he was given a Bible for 3 weeks, that's all.

You see friends, the Bible changes things because it's the Word of God.

It is God-breathed for all scriptures given by inspiration of God, as we read in 2nd Timothy 3 16.

When we speak of the Bible that Jesus used, we do not mean merely the copy from which he read.

First of all, it was not a book like our Bible today composed of leaves bound together at the back.

It was rather a scroll or roll as we'd call it written with black carbon ink on parchment made from the skins of animals.

Sometimes the scriptures in Christ's day were written on papyrus, which was something like paper, in fact the name paper came from it, made by splitting papyrus stalks lengthwise into thin strips, putting them down 1 layer horizontally, another in the opposite direction, gluing them together and flattening them down with a hot iron.

The papyrus plant is much like the bulrush or cattail which grows along the edges of rivers and lakes.

Usually however the Holy Scriptures were written on the skins of animals which had been made into fine parchment or plain leather.

The various pieces were then sewn together in a strip from 20 to 30 feet long.

A stick was put in each end on which the parchment could be rolled.

The writing began at the right, and 1 read from right to left, just the opposite to our English custom.

What did the Bible that Jesus used contain?

Well it contained the books of the Old Testament only.

There was no New Testament yet, but it began to be written soon after our Savior was crucified and ascended to heaven.

The first part of the New Testament, of course, contains the Gospels which record the life story of our Lord Jesus Christ himself.

Then follow the epistles and other books of the New Testament written by the disciples and apostles of Christ.

The last book of the Old Testament had been written about 400 years before Jesus was born.

The Old Testament scriptures are in the original Hebrew exactly the same as the books which we have today translated into our own language.

Now some people neglect the Old Testament and I think it's a great mistake.

We should remember it was the only Bible that Jesus used.

It was from the prophecies of the Old Testament that they proved that He was the true Christ.

The Apostle Peter declares that these Old Testament books the Bible Jesus had were inspired by the Spirit of Christ Himself.

We read this in 1 Peter 1, verses 10 and onward.

The Holy Spirit inspired these very books.

The Spirit of Christ which was in them we read.

Now comes the question, what did Jesus say about the Holy Scriptures?

Now remember, everything he said about them applies to the Old Testament as well as to the New.

Jesus studied the Old Testament and knew it.

He quoted from all portions of it—the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms, the 3 great divisions of the Old Testament as we discover in Luke 24 and 25.

Jesus referred to the flood which is recorded in the book of Genesis.

He spoke of Abraham as a real person, Matthew 8, 11.

He referred to Moses in his writings, John 3.14.

Jesus spoke of David and Elijah, Matthew 12.

He referred to Daniel as a prophet, Matthew 24.

He also spoke of the prophet Isaiah, Mark 7.

Jesus put the Holy Scriptures above the traditions and teachings of man, even of good men.

In the 3 great temptations brought to Jesus by Satan, he quoted 3 times from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy.

We read this in Matthew 4, the first 11 verses.

He used this mighty weapon, the Word of God, which is the sword of the Spirit.

We read in Ephesians 6, 17, Jesus knew that the Word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, as the Apostle tells us in Hebrews 4.12.

With 3 mighty sword thrusts, he defeated the enemy.

The Word of God is to be our weapon of defense.
