4. Medical Missionary Work: The Motive & the Power

This message was presented at the GYC 2015 conference called Chosen Faithful in Louisville, Kentucky.

Again, Father, this afternoon we want to turn our thoughts to You, and we ask that You will help us to understand the motives and the power to do this work that you're calling us to do.

So this talk has in it, woven through it, the same concept that we've been using for the entire, for the 3 previous talks.

And that concept is the concept of self-sacrificing love.

Sacrifice motivated by love that gives you power to make change.

And this is actually 1 of the strongest areas where we're going to talk about it today.

I'm going to make a statement, and it's a pretty big statement, and we're gonna repeat it a couple times during our presentation, but I want you to kind of get the gist of it.

The faith of Jesus, we're talking about the 3 angels' message, remember those who have the faith of Jesus?

The faith of Jesus is the key to the motive and the power of Jesus.

We're seeking to persuade all of you in this particular presentation that the key to both the motive and the power that you need in medical ministry is the faith of Jesus.

Revelation 14 12, here is the patience of the saints, here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

So the faith of Jesus is the key to the motive and power of Jesus.

We've often heard that Jesus is our example in all things.

Where our power is, is the same source as he got his power.

You can only live a Christ-like life through the same source of motive and power as He got.

I'm gonna read a scripture, and then I want you to raise your hands if you can identify with this passage in your own personal life.

For what I will to do, what I desire to do, that I do not practice.

Going on down, for to will is present with me.

But how to perform what is good I do not find.

For the good that I will do, I do not do, but the evil that I don't want to do, that's what I practice.

How many can identify with that statement?

If you didn't raise your hand, I question your truthfulness.

We all experience that same struggle, But realize that that's the struggle that the people that you're ministering to also experiences.

It's a struggle that every man and woman on planet earth has.

Let's equate in the message to the Laodiceans.

Remember the Laodicean church message in Revelation chapter 3.

His diagnosis, we're spiritually wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.

His remedy, buy from me pure gold, white clothes, and eyesalve.

His power for the living, the sacrificial Christ-like life, I will come into Him and dine with Him and He with me.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love 1 another.

And by this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love for 1 another.

The very evidence that we are the disciples of Jesus is to love like Jesus loved.

Jesus loved and forgave even his enemies, even those who crucified him.

Now that's impossible for us to do on our own power.

And it's why this type of love is the clearest evidence and really the demonstration that Jesus is living his life on me.

The type of love, that total giving love, sacrificial love, is proof that we are Christ's disciples.

Because we absolutely cannot do it on our own.

And it's only through the faith of Jesus that that can happen.

See, in the medical ministry, it's impossible to perform as Jesus did without his motives, without his power.

And just as the victorious life of Jesus is impossible to perform without his motives and power, that is the reason why it's the gospel in illustration when we do medical missionary work.

Because it shows how our characters ourselves have changed for us to be able to take on the power of Christ to do work for others.

It's why it's so vitally important that the healing ministry and the gospel ministry be closely connected.

The healing ministry is dependent upon the gospel ministry to bring power for change.

The gospel ministry is dependent on the healing ministry to provide practical illustration of the gospel, so people can understand how the cure from sin works.

I should have had this on the screen for you when you were reading that, but just to emphasize that the healing ministry is dependent upon the gospel ministry to bring power for change.

The gospel ministry is dependent upon the healing ministry, to provide a practical illustration of the gospel so the people can understand how the cure from sin works.

So here let's look at Testimonies Volume 6.

Medical missionary work is in no case to be divorced from the gospel ministry.

The Lord has specified that the 2 shall be as closely connected as the arm is with the body.

Without this union, neither part of the work is what?

The medical missionary work is the gospel in illustration.

We've mentioned that over and over again today, and we wanna just drive that point home, Okay?

Now we're talking about the motive and the power of medical ministry and You need to know that not all motivations are equal you see I think I've said it before sacrificial love is stronger even than the desire for self-preservation.

Sacrificial love can be stronger than even the desire for self-preservation.

I saw a newscast once where a child had fallen off a bridge into a river.

His father, without hesitation, dove off the bridge into the water, grabbed his child and struggled with him at great effort, finally brought him to the side.

But he didn't hesitate to save this child where self-preservation would have said, this is not a good idea.

But his love for the child would sacrifice self.

And that's the kind of power that we need in medical ministry.

The motive for living a sacrificial Christ-like life comes from the love of God.

That's where the strength to accomplish tasks are.

2 Corinthians 5.14 is the love of God that compels us.

You see, it's the love of God that compels us.

Our feeble minds are incapable of even fully comprehending the breath, the length, the depth, the height, the love of God.

But as we catch a glimpse, just a little glimpse of that love and accept it really fully for ourselves, it creates brand new patterns of thinking that change us, new motives that take place in our hearts.

And when we recognize for ourselves the matchless love of God, it alters our characters.

Characters on the cross Jesus was treated like you deserve So that he can treat you only like he deserves As He hung upon the cross between heaven and earth, He suffered the abuse of His creation, and He cried out, Father, what?

3. Medical Missionary Work: Principles & Concepts

Loving Father, we just thank you for this time this afternoon to study and to share think together we pray that you will send your Holy Spirit to us as we consider principles and concepts of your work.

And we pray that you will guide us in our work for you that we may follow your ways and not our own.

Okay, so to this presentation called Principles and Concepts, We wanted to present this particular presentation because there are so many aspects that affect medical ministry that if you can think of them in advance And if you can consider them prior to them occurring, you can either avoid mistakes or you can take advantage of good opportunities.

There is a risk we take when we present this to you.

And the risk is that it could be quite disjointed.

Because there are a variety of things that we've gathered, trying to put into some coherent whole these ideas that we can give to you.

Do you think in all those years that I had the medical ministry in mind, do you think I might have run into some mistakes that I made?

Or possibly found some real solutions that could have been a blessing, had I known them in advance?

Pastor Wayne not only has been a pastor for years and years and years, but he's also been in charge of working at a lifestyle center for many years.

Do you think that he might have had in that process the opportunity to come across some things that if he had somebody telling him about beforehand, he might have actually, you know, made some good on it, made some extra moves in the right direction?

So you have to kind of look at these principles and concepts that way.

Each 1 of these things we're going to share with you actually does have a backstage, a back story.

These are not just pulled out of the air.

They're actual things that we had in relationships or circumstances or situations that we've been in.

And there's others that you could probably fill out many, many others.

So just to let you know, this is not complete.

We're going to have 4 major divisions in what we're going to share with you.

Principles and concepts related to relationships, methods of ministry, the concept of sacrifice has its own component that we're gonna share with you.

And the idea of the combined work also will have its own component.

So I just wanna make the statement that medical missionary work and the third angel's message are connected through these principles and concepts.

It says here that here is the patience of the saints.

Here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

And so our assignment really is to show how there is a connection between the medical missionary work and the third angel's message.

That's what we're trying to pull together.

And therefore, as I mentioned, it's not gonna be a full exposition on the gospel side now.

It won't be a full exposition on the gospel side now.

It won't be a full exposition on the gospel side of this third angel's message, but it will be on the medical missionary side of the third angel's message.

So the first principle we want to talk about is medical missionary work needs to be driven by relationship.

That relationship, first of all, is a relationship that is dependent upon God.

It's not what you do, but it's who you are.

It's not what you do, But it's who you are in your heart and in your life your words your actions what is The core value in your life revelation 3 Verses 14 actually verses 15 and 16 is what we're looking at but the Latest Ian message is verses 14 to 22 Jesus says to us as Seventh day evidence.

I know your works That you neither cold nor hot.

So then because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, he will do what?

So It's not what we do, it's who we are in our core being.

In John 5, 30, Jesus himself says, "'I can of myself do nothing.

"'As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous "'because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me.

He was totally dependent upon his Father, and we are as well.

So the next principle we'll cover is this, in this relationship portion, is the principle that medical ministry, ministry of any kind, but particularly this gospel medical ministry that represents the character of Jesus, needs to be driven by prayer.

There is, in my opinion now, that I can see, there is no other kind of ministry that I've ever been involved in that tests me so much.

It tests my pride and arrogance, my self-will, the whether or not I am going to listen for where God would send me.

All of these are tested in this medical ministry portion.

And if I don't focus in prayer, then I will not be changed and I will become inadequate to the task, because I have to be imbued by the Spirit of God, and prayer changes me.

In Luke 11, 9, it says, "'So I say to you, ask and it shall be given to you.

"'Everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds.

"'To him who knocks is open to you, it is open.

"'If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone or a fish?

Will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?

Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

If You then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children.

How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

In medical ministry, we need to be so in tune with Christ that we yearn so much for his will that we ask him, Please help me minister to this individual to meet their needs and it changes me by doing that.

In James 5 15 and 16, and the prayer of faith will save the sick And the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sin, he will be forgiven.

Confess your trespasses 1 to another, and pray for 1 another, that you may be healed.

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." And that last phrase challenges every single 1 of us to our very core being.

It's gotta be, the relationships have gotta go through prayer.

In Jeremiah 33, verses 2 and 3, thus says the Lord who made it, the Lord who formed and established it, The Lord is His name.

And if you don't know how to pray, if you don't know how to really seek people's salvation through medical missionary work, ask him.

I cannot tell you how many Seventh-day Adventists, good, good men and women who have gone through medical school and medical training.

They've got all this excellence in their background and yet they don't know, they question, how in the world do I help somebody understand the gospel when I sit in front of them in a patient room.

If they question it, do you think anybody else might?

So asking God to give deliverance in this, to give guidance in this, is really a key.

Now, we're talking about this medical ministry concept being driven by relationship.

We said medical missionary work is not what you do, it's who you are.

We said that medical missionary work needs to be driven by prayer.

And now, we want to say that medical missionary work needs to be maintained by a personal contact with Jesus.

You can start really well in medical missionary work with great altruistic motives.

But medicine and health care will wear you down.

It will wear you down physically, but it will also wear you down emotionally.

You will rise to high standards and yet because of our personal selfishness sometimes we will find that we stray from the principles we started with.

And without that close personal contact with Jesus, moment by moment, that is a real struggle.

2. Medical Missionary Work: Lessons From History

Welcome to this presentation on medical missionary work and lessons from sacred history.

So let's go ahead and our head okay Father in heaven again we turn our thoughts to you and We seek for your spirit to guide and direct us.

And so we just ask that you will work here this morning.

We lay our lives before you and we just commit ourselves to you.

And we ask that you help us to understand lessons from history so we do not repeat the mistakes of history.

Okay, so This topic, Lessons from Sacred History, has 1 major point, a theme that floats through the whole presentation.

The theme is self-sacrificing love and service.

The whole purpose of this lesson is to point out some of the failures that we as a people going back in time into sacred history have made.

And it can be a hard thing to look at, but it's with a purpose.

Because by recognizing these negative things that can happen, we can choose another way.

And that's our goal, is to choose another way.

The Scripture says, rebuke a wise man and he will thank you for it.

And so today we want to look at some of these very difficult and hard to hear things about our history because it's not pleasant for us to take according to ourselves, say, I wasn't part of that, that was history.

And that's the whole concept is to be able to choose that way around those mistakes of the people of God in the past.

The Bible is faithful to chronicle those errors that we have made and we can actually use that material the way they were intended to be used to be a blessing and an uplifting point for ourselves to avoid those mistakes.

So I'd like to start by saying this second and the first part of the 3 angels' message are extremely strong warnings for the world and for God's people at the end of time.

Warnings against following the world's methods, principles, and practices.

And essentially, it's a warning against false opinions, opinions that are not of God.

So Revelation 14, 8 through 10 is the 1 that talks about Babylon being fallen, that great city who made all nations drink the wrath of her fornication, wine of the wrath of her fornication, and this really strong third angel's warning against false worship.

False worship in terms of bowing down maybe, but also possibly false worship of following my own direction and worshiping my own thoughts and processes.

Those who don't learn the lessons from history, we would be repeating them and we'd be doomed to repeat the same issues again if we didn't know what errors they had made.

And so we as a people, if we can avoid using worldly means to accomplish sacred ends, we will avoid suffering, both of ourselves, and be more effective for God.

So we're gonna take a look at 3 lessons, historic lessons, with modern day parallels and lessons for us.

But first, let me just read Testimonies to Ministers, page 31.

If we will put our trust in the Lord, for we are handling the mighty truths of the Word of God.

If we walk in the light as it shines upon us from the living oracles of God, we shall have large responsibilities corresponding with the great light given us of God.

We have many duties to perform because we have been made the depositories of what?

Of sacred truth to be given to the world in all its beauty and glory.

We are debtors to God to use every advantage He has entrusted to us to beautify the truth by holiness of character and to send the messages of warning and Of comfort of hope and love to those who are in the darkness and air of sin We want to focus on the reality of these statements.

We have been made depositories of the sacred truths to be given to this world in all its beauty and glory.

That is what has been given to you and to me.

How are we going to handle these truths that God has given us.

So the first lesson that we're going to learn from is the lesson of the fall of Israel.

Have you ever wondered, as I did when I was new in the faith way back in high school.

Here you have the nation of Israel with God as the head, a theocracy given to God as a people with a special message And a special message to be able to share with the world.

This group of people given a special place amongst the world so that they could share what God would have them to share.

But in a single generation, they went from the greatest and most influential nation on earth directly under God to a broken and divided nation without a place to stand in a single generation.

And it's the lesson that came from that fall that we want to focus on today because it really is...it gives us great direction.

If you turn to patriarchs and prophets, you'll find 3 key principles that were involved in the fall of the nation of Israel that we want to focus in on.

Number 1, they lost the spirit of self-sacrifice.

Number 2, they took to themselves the glory that was due to God alone.

And number 3, they lost their missionary zeal and turned great opportunities for witness into opportunities for commerce, to gain a buck.

This is what caused the fall of that great nation with its missionary purpose.

Israel was the greatest and most wealthy nation at the time, during the time of Solomon's reign, but he fell in that 1 generation, and these key elements were the thing that caused it.

So the first principle, let's go with them 1 by 1 and see how these developed.

The principle number 1, they lost the spirit of self-sacrifice.

Well, how could that happen with all that they had been given?

You would think with great blessings would come great responsibility and great response to the Lord.

Well, I'll share with you the beginning of it.

You see, with the laying of the foundation of the temple was the very beginning of that error which caused the downfall of the nation.
