Great- Part 1

Let's be thinking of those questions as we enter into our study tonight.

We'll begin with that book of beginnings, Genesis, the 12th chapter, the first 3 verses.

Now the Lord had said unto Abram, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee.

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing.

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee.

And in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

As 1 of old testified concerning God, it is in thine hand to make great.

If God should come to you as he did to Abraham and tell you that he wanted to make you great, and tell you why, so that you could be a blessing to many people, would you be willing?

You know, there's something interesting about our attitude toward being great.

Some people want it, it makes them proud.

Some people are afraid of being proud, so they never want to be great or anything resembling it.

God wants to make you great, my dear friend, but he doesn't want that to make you proud because that isn't great.

God had a family in heaven before the creation of this world, and there was 1 creature that he made the greatest of anything that he had created.

God made Lucifer great, but he chose to let that greatness awaken pride in his heart.

But isn't it too bad when the only way God can keep you and me from being proud is to keep us so little and of no consequence what we do, that we're just humbled by the inadequacy and the lack of results of our lives.

God made him great before that nation of Egypt.

He saved the lives of millions of people, great in the sight of the Lord and in the sight of men.

Because he could say from his heart to Pharaoh, It is not in me.

God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

Them that honour me I will honour, says God.

Daniel was great, so great that the king of Babylon got off his throne and got down before him in acknowledging the greatness of Daniel and the greatness of the God he worshipped.

But Daniel could say from his heart, this thing hasn't been revealed to me for anything that I had more than others.

But God wants to give you, King Nebuchadnezzar, the answer to your questions and problems.

Dear friends, when God can teach us to accept greatness without it making us proud, There is no limit to what he is waiting to do with the remnant.

In many a lad of today, growing up as did Daniel in his Judean home, studying God's word in his works and learning the lessons of faithful service, will yet stand in legislative assemblies, in halls of justice or in royal courts, as a witness for the King of Kings.

But it's not going to make them proud, not exalt them.

They're going to take those opportunities and use them to exalt God and Jesus Christ whom he has saved.

So let us, as men of God, have done with lesser things.

Let us enter in to God's purpose and let him do with us what he longs to do.

I will make of thee a great nation, and thou shalt be a blessing.

You remember that it took a long time to work out the plan that God had.

In recognition of that, God changed his name from Abram to Abraham.

And Abraham means the father of a great multitude.

What a wonderful expression of faith that Abraham accepted that name.

Contrary to all appearances, contrary to what people would expect, Abraham became eventually the father of the ancestor, not only of millions of people, but of the Messiah, who according to the flesh was born of the seed of Abraham.

Several hundred years later, after the time of Abraham, Moses is rehearsing to the descendants of this man of faith the history of God's dealing with them.

Turn to the eighth chapter of Deuteronomy, second verse.

Thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee.

Again and again in the Bible we see the dear Lord through his prophets seeking to keep alive the memories of his leading, that they might learn precious lessons.

Thou should remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these 40 years in the wilderness to humble thee and to prove thee to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.

They were to be humble, but they weren't to be inconsequential in their influence.

Let's turn back here to the sixth chapter of Deuteronomy.

I think first we'll turn to the fourth chapter.

Deuteronomy 4, beginning with the fifth verse.

Moses says, I taught you statutes and judgments as the Lord commanded me.

This is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

God's purpose in making Israel great was that they might have influence with all the other nations.

He told them if they would just do his commandments, that the result of doing them would be such a demonstration that the other nations would say Israel has the best laws of any nation on earth, has the best way of life of any people on earth.

And so Moses says in the 7th verse, For what nation is there so great?

Israel became the greatest nation on earth as it followed out God's plans.

Who hath God so nigh unto them as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon him for.

Isn't it too bad that Israel didn't stay with those laws and statutes?

Again and again they became so attracted by the customs and fashions of the nations around them that they went into idolatry, choosing the pleasures of sin for a season and missing their glorious opportunity.

Nevertheless, friends, to a certain extent at different times, they carried out these principles and in the days of David and Solomon, all the nations of the earth knew about the God of Israel.

You remember that the Queen of Sheba came from a great distance to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

God wanted, through the greatness of Israel and Israel's leaders, to impress all the people of this world with the beauty of His plan and the glory of His way.

Again and again in these chapters in Deuteronomy, God said to Israel, Be careful, don't forget.

Don't lose what I've given you, because Your wisdom is in doing what these commandments say.

Your success is in doing what the law of God commands.

That's what the law of God is for, is to give us that success.

Seventh chapter of Deuteronomy, 12th verse.

He says, if you just hearken to these judgments, listen to these commandments and do them, then the Lord is going to do all kinds of things.

12th verse, 13th verse, 14th verse, thou shalt be blessed above all people.

15th verse, and the Lord shall take away from thee all sickness.

I was reading the other day, in 1 of the inspired comments, that God intended to take everybody that came out of the land of Egypt through to Canaan without 1 of them either getting sick or dying.

As I read it, I thought, there is coming a time when God will produce a group of people and he's going to have lived through the most awful plagues that this world ever saw, and not 1 of them is going to catch those diseases.

They're going to be translated without seeing death when Jesus comes.

Had the Israelites obeyed the instruction they received and profited by their advantages, they would have been the world's object lesson of health and prosperity.

Cheer up you pilgrims, be joyful and sing, Jesus is coming again.

My father is omnipotent, on that you can rely.

A God of might and miracles, Tis written in the sky.

It took a miracle to put the stars in place.

It took a miracle to hang the world in space.

But when he saved my soul, cleansed and made me whole, It took a miracle of love and grace.

Though here his glory has been shown, we will not fully see the wonders of his might and throne until eternity.

Here now is HMS Richards, the Voice of Prophecy speaker, is subject, On the Day of the Cross.

And that was a day unlike any other day before or since.

It was a day of betrayal, a day of disappointment, a day of heartbreak.

It was the day on which the sun was darkened at noon, a day on which the earth shook as though it trembled before the awful scene on Calvary.

It was the day on which mankind, church and state, rejected the Son of God.

The day on which he cried out in agony, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

The day on which his own disciples forsook him and fled.

It was the day of Christ's atoning sacrifice for the world.

It was the day on which men seemed to turn the face of hatred toward heaven, and God turned the face of love toward the earth.

There have been and there are various theories of the atonement of Christ for men, but the 1 that is plain and true and simple so that we can all understand it is the statement of the great Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians 15 3.

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.

There have been many great teachers in the world but only 1 Savior.

Thou shalt call his name Jesus said the angel for he shall save his people from their sins.

Since the wages of sin is death, as we read in Romans the sixth chapter, The only way to save sinners would be to die for them, to take their wages.

God could not save sinners as such, for sin is the transgression of the law.

The penalty for sin as pronounced by God himself is death.

I cannot forget the truism that the judge is condemned when the guilty is acquitted.

The only way for God to be just, and at the same time, the justifier of the sinner is for that sinner to believe in Jesus as his substitute and for Jesus to take his place and be treated as he deserved that the sinner might be treated as Jesus deserved.

Dale, the great English preacher, who once said very beautifully about the work of Jesus, the real truth is that while he came to preach the gospel, his chief object in coming was that there might be a gospel to preach.

True it is that it was our Savior's death upon the cross that gives us a gospel, the good news of salvation and brings hope to the world.

And Jesus died voluntarily, never forget that.

Our Savior said, and I'm reading John the 10th chapter, 17th verse beginning, Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.

I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.

This commandment have I received of my Father.

We must not think of God the Father as demanding the death of his Son as a means of appeasing his own wrath and reconciling himself to us.

Such a conception of the Atonement arises from a perverted idea of the character of God.

Never forget that the love of Christ is the love of God.

For God was in Christ, said the Apostle, reconciling the world unto himself.

Yes, he suffered with him in Gethsemane and on the cross.

There the heart of infinite love paid the price of our redemption.

For it is written, let us all repeat it together, there in Radioland, everyone join us, God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

You see, we need to be reconciled to God, not God to us, for God has always loved us.

There are those who assert that it's contrary to justice for 1 to bear punishment to another, but we need to remember that God did not punish Christ for our sins.

Punishment implies a moral responsibility, a personal guilt.

Jesus voluntarily assumed the penalty for man's sin and met it but not as a punishment.

He freely took the liabilities of those who were bankrupt through sin.

Ogden Armour some time ago discharged about 18 million dollars of personal liabilities of the testator, sacrificing their own private fortune to do it, although there was no legal claim upon them.

They did it merely for the protection of the good name of the family.

No 1 could complain that there was injustice in the act since it was done voluntarily and not under pressure.

The party's concern were universally lauded for their willingness to carry a family burden.

This is only a feeble illustration of what we are trying to make plain, but Francia does suggest the wide difference between suffering and punishment due another, and voluntarily paying the penalty involved in the conduct of another.

We must remember that righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

So You Want Me To Be an Expert Witness?

Now, for the sake of time, we're really going to start going.

This course is called, so you want to be an expert witness, please focus on the question mark at the end.

The other title for this talk is, How to evangelize without losing patience or patience, which happens to us a lot in the office here.

So I have a couple of disclosures I want to go over.

First is I'm really not an expert witness.

I'm just a regular person like most of us.

Okay, I'm just a regular SDA, kind of like all of you guys.

And finally, I'm not an expert witness, but I'm going to share what I've learned, what I've thought about, and how it's impacted myself and my practice.

So this is kind of my step-by-step journey here to kind of go over this real quickly.

For those who don't know me, I was born in S.K.

I went to P.U.C., Loma Linda Medical School.

And the first part of my medical career, I had prayed 5 times with any patient for the whole 15 years.

I wanted to do high-tech cardiology, et cetera.

Then 1 of my friends kind of kind of slowly chided me into starting to pray of patience And so I started and basically I was scared to death when I started doing this All right, And I'll talk about some of those experiences.

Finally, joined AMN, started doing some more passive witnessing, praying to more patients.

But let's be honest, not very comfortable.

I'm actually in a patient's prayer chain, email chain with them, which is a lot of fun.

What's really been great though, we have morning prayer for our staff, which has been phenomenal.

I work at Kettering Health Network, which is an Adventist hospital, all the administrative meetings, they all have prayer devotion, but the doctor meetings, we don't start with prayer.

So we're slowly working that in, starting with prayer, and it's actually been received very well, basically building a habit on how to do this.

The point being here, it doesn't matter where you are on the spectrum.

Some of these people, you're probably EFDZ because some people are actually doing real medical missionary work.

But no matter where you are, it depends on where you want to eventually get to.

I'm not going to go through this, but this is obviously the Great Commission that Jesus said before he took off back to heaven.

There's something else that's even more compelling to me.

All right, he is a famous outspoken atheist.

He has this very powerful quote when he talks about Christians.

I always said that I don't, do not respect people who do not proselytize.

If you believe there's a heaven and a hell and people are going to hell and not getting eternal life and you think it's not really worth telling them because it would make it socially awkward, how much do you have to hate that person not to tell them about that?

How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that there really is everlasting life, but you're not going to tell them.

Then he goes on and says this, I mean if I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt a truck was going to come and hit you, there's a certain point where I'm going to tackle you.

So besides the Great Commission, the world, the atheists, they're calling us to do what we're supposed to do.

These slides will be available if you want them afterwards, so you don't have to take copious notes.

OK, now here's the present state of medical affairs.

This just came out last week in Journal of JAMA Internal Medicine.

And they looked and they videotaped end of care life discussions with families and doctors.

1 third of doctors are now atheist or agnostic.

This is probably the most important thing here in the bottom.

77% of Families view religion as being very important or fairly important.

After they analyzed all the video data, this is what they found.

Only 16% of end-of-life care discussions had any mention of religion or spirituality.

65% of the time, it was brought up by the family or their surrogates.

Only 5.6% of the time was any spirituality interjected by the doc.

The rest was chaplains, nurses, social workers.

So 77, 78% of families think this is important, but we're only bringing up 5% of the time.

Now here's the real scope of the problem.

As a metaphor of life, who are we in this picture?

Okay, we're saved, we have the life preservers, and we have room in the boat, right?

The People who, the unbelievers, they're these guys here drowning.

Are we going to throw in the life preserver or are we just going to be too timid and too scared to upset people and let them drown?

So It'll get lighter as the talk goes on, I know it's getting pretty serious.

But the thing I want you to think about is we have the opportunity to be part of the greatest life-saving operation in history.

I love Proverbs, makes you think about what you're doing for life.

Proverbs says, rescued those being led away to death, hold back those staggering towards slaughter.

If you say we know nothing about this, does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
