Something Greater than the name of Jesus

Of course, once again, I do ask that if you would please bow your heads with me for a word of prayer before we open the Bible.

Father in heaven, Lord, we thank you for the beautiful Sabbath day that we had, for the many blessings that has come about, realized or even not yet.

But Lord, I know you desire to bless us so much.

You wish to pour heaven's gift upon us, and that is your Holy Spirit.

Father, this evening we are asking for an extra portion of your Spirit, as we open your word once again.

Please come and bring your Bibles to Isaiah chapter 6.

Isaiah chapter 6 and our topic for this evening is, something greater than the name of Jesus.

And in order to understand what is greater than the name of Jesus, I want you to understand how great his name is to begin with.

Above it stood the seraphims, each 1 had 6 wings, with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

And 1 cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.

I mentioned this in a previous sermon a few nights ago.

But friends, when angels that have never sinned, angels that are perfect, When they cry and call upon the name of the Lord, they cover their faces.

And do you know that wherever the Lord is, it is holy?

Whether it be in an auditorium like this, whether it be in a little cave in the desert, wherever God's presence is, it is holy.

And although we are not in holy time right now, I believe we are on holy ground.

But wherever the Lord's presence is, it is holy.

And I heard once that when the people translated and transcribed the Bible, every time they came across the Lord's name, they had to change their pens.

Matthew chapter 6, familiar verse I'm sure to most of us, so I'm going to read it as soon as I get there.

Matthew chapter 6 and verse 9, the Bible says, our Father which art in heaven, what?

Do you know, I don't know why, but the King James Version just has this ring about it.

I don't know how much holier that is, But doesn't that just sound beautiful?

I don't know anywhere else in the Bible that it talks about something hallowed except God's name.

Well, we're told not to take His name in vain.

Come with me to Acts chapter 4 and verse 10, starting in verse 10.

Be it known unto you all and to all the people of Israel, That by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

This is the stone which was set at naught of you builders, which has become the head of the corner.

Verse 12, neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.

Salvation comes through the name of Jesus.

Friends, it is by this name that we are saved.

There is none other name given under heaven whereby man can be saved today.

Matthew chapter 28 and verses 18 to 20, speaking of the great commission, before Jesus went up to heaven, He said, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Go ye therefore teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

1 more, Proverbs chapter 18 and verse 10.

Proverbs 18 verse 10 the Bible says, The name of the Lord is like what?

The righteous runneth into it and is safe.

Do you know all the times I was in Taiwan for 3 and a half years, I was so sad.

But for some reason, I don't like it because I like people to suffer.

I like it because when I see the wind blowing and I'm sitting in my house, I love that feeling.

Because in that same house that I sat, a few weeks ago, an earthquake shook, and I was so afraid.

But the Lord's name is like a strong tower, friends.

You can find refuge in it with every trial and problem you have.

Maybe you don't call on the name of the Lord enough.

But friends, it is this name that saves us.

And believe it or not, I believe that is peace as well and safety.

In Christ Triumphant, page 219, the pen of inspiration writes, "'Satan trembles and flees before the weakest soul who finds refuge in that mighty name.

Do you know that when I grew up in Malaysia I was such a scared boy.

And then I would hear these stories from people like Pastor Simon Hsu about these ghost stories.

And everyone's like this, and I'm so scared.

I would go home, and I'd have to sleep next to my mother's bed on this little red mat that they have there.

And they never liked it when I do that, so I had to creep in while they were asleep.

But the weakest of people, when they call upon the mighty name of Jesus, the devils flee.

No sooner is the name of Jesus mentioned in love and tenderness than angels of God draw near to soften and subdue the heart.

I believe that you were praying in the name of Jesus this afternoon.

I too was very jealous because I had to go home and prepare for this sermon.

But friends, you can call on the name of Jesus for anything and for everything.

In fact, I believe we should learn to make it a habit.

Because in the most sudden of accidents, I believe, accidents, you can still call upon his name.

I remember a friend that was driving down the road in Virginia where I was studying, and the road was icy.

And just as he was coming around, it was a two-lane road split in the middle.

And he was going down that road, it hit a patch of black ice.

It's the most dangerous of all ice, if I could just make that description.

But as is my custom, I'd just like to ask that you would please, once more, bow your heads with me before we get into the Word of God.

Our Lord and Savior, as we are about to open your Holy Bible, May you please draw close to us now.

Father, I pray that you would hedge about this building and hedge about this room, your holy angels.

May there be no room for him in this place.

Hover over us with your Holy Spirit, and may you speak to us directly from thy word this morning.

Our topic for this morning is entitled The 13th Disciple.

And friends, before we open the Bible, I want to share with you something that has stuck in my mind.

Ever since I began my internship to finish or complete my theology degree, I went to a church to preach and that afternoon the senior pastor of the church there in Atlanta, Georgia, he shared a phrase with us, all the young people that were sitting there, And this phrase has forever stuck in my mind.

And I want to share with you this morning.

Friends, maybe you already know this, but there is no commitment without sacrifice.

There is no such thing as genuine commitment if it does not involve some sort of sacrifice along the way.

As a bride walks down the aisle, as she looks at the man that is about to be her husband, She knows that there is sacrifice involved.

And as that man is standing there looking at his beautiful bride, walking down the aisle towards him, He knows that there is some sort of sacrifice involved.

I'm sure those that are single will understand this as well.

What sort of sacrifice is involved in a marriage?

Now, I hope it is good sacrifice you're thinking about.

If you're single and you sleep on a double bed or a king-size bed, you're blessed.

My guy friends, I'm sorry, I need to spend time with my wife.

But at any stage of the marriage, do you go like this?

I mean, is the groom there standing there and he's like, I have to sacrifice my bed.

I'm sorry guys, I really want to be with you, but I have to go home to my wife.

If you feel that way, you need marriage counseling.

There is no such thing as commitment and no sacrifice.

Creation of Adam has already taken place.

We're picking it up in verse 18 And I want to dedicate this verse to my dear sister, Karina.

And the Lord God said, it is not good that man should be alone.

As you should know by now, Karina is single.

And she made it very clear in her report.

But do you know that this is a promise by God?

The God that created each and every 1 of you, he said it is not good.

And if He said it is not good and if he said it is not good for man to be alone He also means that it's not good for woman to be alone, too.

Amen Because he's not talking about men with men It is not good for man to be alone.

I will make an help meet with him He says and then in verse 19 out of the Lord out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air and Brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them And whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

And Adam gave names to all the cattle and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field.

But for Adam, there was not found an helpmeet for him.

As all the animals passed by, Adam, with that 100% brain power of his, he began naming all the animals.

And then they all passed by and he noticed a pattern going along.

And God put the desire and the need for him to have companionship in his heart.

And then it says in verse 21 that the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept, and he took 1 of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof.

Friends, in order for Adam to be committed to his new wife, what did he have to sacrifice?

Do you think Adam got up and he was unhappy with his operation?

He even forgot that he was missing a rib because the woman in front of him was so beautiful that he went, wow, man.

Commitment and sacrifice go hand in hand.

Genesis chapter 12, looking at Abraham, the great father of our faith.

Starting in verse 1, the Bible says, Now the Lord God had said unto Abraham, Get thee out of thy country from thy kindred and from thy father's house unto a land that I will show thee and I will make of thee a great nation and I will bless thee and make thy name great and thou shalt be a blessing and I will bless them that bless thee and Curse him that cursed thee and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken unto him, and Lot went with him, and Abram was 75 years old when he departed out of Haran.

Friends, when God called Abraham at the very beginning, in order for Abraham to show and demonstrate his commitment to God, what did he have to sacrifice?

And maybe there are some here that God might call you 1 day and you might have to leave this country.

Well, to some it'll be a good thing because many are trying to leave this country anyways.

Not paid enough, higher crime rate, I don't know what it is.

But God might call you to leave the very ones that you love and the place that has been familiar to you for 75 years there is no commitment without sacrifice.

The Bible says here, By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.

Friends, in order for Moses to become committed to God and to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, what did he have to do?

But if we were to put it in the tangible things, he had to step down from being called the son of Pharaoh's daughter.

Did you know that inspiration tells us that Moses was the nation's pride?

Moses was not some little unknown man in Egypt.

He was regarded and for most people to be the next successor to Pharaoh.

He was what Egypt put all their hopes on.

This was the sort of decisions that Moses had to deal with.

He wasn't just leaving a job that paid him a thousand ringgit.

He was the richest of all the inheritors there.

He had everything at his disposal, but yet he never forgot the first 12 years of his home teaching.

Parents, do never, never underestimate the importance of what you are doing from years 1 to 12.

Following Jesus

Our loving Heavenly Father, you are our Creator, you are our Father, you are our Redeemer and our Savior.

You loved us so much that you gave your only begotten son to die on that cross so you can inherit the kingdom of God.

Dear Lord, we ask that you will be with us throughout this hour.

I ask that you will forgive my sin, Lord.

Cleanse my lips and mouth with the cord that from heavenly sanctuary lie.

I also pray that you'll be with our congregations.

Remove the stony hearts from their heart and give them heart of flesh.

They will see how wonderful it is to hear your words.

This is our prayer in Jesus' precious name.

This morning's message is titled, The Heavenly Messenger.

My son, the first son, Michael, He caught cold the day before yesterday.

And last night, he was crying at least, I think, twice, around 1 o'clock and 3 o'clock.

And he would not stop crying because he was hurting and just keep coughing for like an hour.

So my wife and I, we couldn't really sleep.

That's why my voice is kind of husky this morning.

I hope that you bear with me this morning.

The third gospel of the New Testament, Luke chapter 1.

Luke chapter 1, verse 5, the Bible says, There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, A certain priest named Zacharias of the course of Abia, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinance of the Lord, blameless." Yesterday we heard Pastor Ben's message about how we had so many righteous people in the past.

They were blameless and they were perfect before the Lord.

Here's another example that we found is a couple were godly and they were fully committed themselves to the Lord.

And they had no child because that Elizabeth was barren.

And they both were now well stricken in years.

And it came to pass that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

And a whole multitude of people were praying without at the time of incense.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

But the angel said unto him, fear not, Zacharias, For thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth.

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.

And he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

And he shall go before him in the spirit and the power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the disobedience to the wisdom of the just, To make ready a people appeared for the Lord and Zechariah said unto the angel Whereby shall I know this for I am an old man and my wife shall well stricken in years And angel answered and said unto him I am hope Gabriel the stand in the presence of God and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee this glad tiding.

10, 000 times 10, 000 so many angels But when God has this glad tiding to Zacharias and Elizabeth Guess who God sent it to him?

Now before we go there, I want to show you a few.

It says, from among the faithful in Israel who had long waited for the coming of the Messiah, the forerunner of Christ arose.

The aged priest Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth were both righteous before God.

And in their quest and holy lives, the light of faith shone out like a star amid the darkness of those evil days.

To this godly pair was given the promise of a son who should go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways Next line to the question of Zacharias The angel said I am Gabriel that stand in the presence of God and am sent to speak unto thee and to show thee this glad tiding.

500 years before, Gabriel had made known to Daniel the prophetic period, which was to extend to the coming of Christ.

The knowledge that the end of this period was near, had moved Zacharias to pray for the Messiah's advent.

Advent, now the very messenger through whom the prophecy was given had come to announce its fulfillment.

John the Baptist went forth in the spirit of power of Elijah to prepare the way of the Lord and to turn the people to the wisdom of the just.

He was a representative of those who live in this last days, to whom God has entrusted sacred truth to present before the people, to prepare the way for the second appearing of Christ.

The angel Gabriel directed from heaven gave a discourse upon health reform to the father and mother of John.

He said that he should not drink wine or strong drink and that he should be filled with the Holy Ghost from his birth.

That was John the Baptist, and the message, the glad tiding was given to his father and mother.

Chapter 1, Book of Luke, chapter 1, Verse 26.

The Bible says, In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.

And the angel came unto her and said, Hail, thou art highly favored.

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

And the angel said unto her, fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with God.

And Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest.

And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then saith Mary unto the angel, how shall this be?

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the higher shall overshadow thee.

Therefore also that holy things which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her who was called Baron.

For with God, nothing shall be impossible." Mary was a humble young lady, living in a small town, known as a wicked and terrible city in Israel.

That's why when people heard Jesus was from Nazareth, They were like, what good thing can come out from this city?

But yet God found this young lady and planned a baby in her womb.

The 4, 000 years that people, since the Adam and Eve fail, they were waiting for the Messiah to come and deliver them from their sins.

And in this special message, God had picked who?

Zacharias well knew how to Abraham in his old age.

A child was given because he believed him faithful who had promised.

But of a moment, the aged priest turns his thought to the weakness of humanity, he forgets that what God has promised, he is able to perform.

What a contrast between this unbelief and the sweet childlike faith of Mary, the maiden of Nazareth, whose answer to the angels' wonderful announcement was, be unto me according to thy word." God had sent this special message and plan to this young lady and not just any ordinary angels but he sent Gabriel.

In the book of Daniel chapter 9, we find a prayer of Daniel.
