Heavenly Father, I thank you so much that you are my Father.

You know that this is not the place where I am, and it's naturally comfortable for me.

It's much easier for me to be out in the woods just talking with you with my golden retriever, and that's more natural for me than here, but I trust that you've called me.

And so I just appeal to you to take control of me now, that you would use my voice, that you would sustain it, that you would work through me and speak through me, and that you would be with all my hearers and that anyone that is watching also on 3BN, that you would bless them and let them hear what you have to say, not anything that is just up what I have in my mind.

Give me your Holy Spirit and give it to us all, I pray.

So, of course, the theme for Pathway to Health is Christ's Method alone.

And we're all very familiar with the quote from Ministry of Healing where that comes from where it's talking about Christ's method alone will give us true success in reaching the people.

And then it goes on to talk about mingling among men is 1 of the desires of their good.

And So I was thinking about that, that passage, after Dr.

Lewis asked me if I would speak here, and I thought, you know, it's been a while since I've read Ministry of Healing, so I'm going to go back and I want to read it.

And incidentally, Ministry of Healing, Patriarchs and Prophets, they just like compete to be my very favorite Ellen White books.

So I had read Patriarchs and Prophets, I was just finishing it, so I went over to Ministry of Healing and I started to read.

And the very first chapter just blew my mind.

Christ's method alone, obviously there's that 1 paragraph but there's chapters in Ministry of Healing where she delineates what Christ's method was.

And I'm just going to read to you some excerpts from the first chapter of Ministry of Healing.

This comes just phrases from all throughout, that just putting some meat on the bones for us, for what it means when it talks about Christ's method alone.

Our Lord Jesus came to this world as the unwearied servant of man's necessity.

He took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses, that he might minister to every need of humanity.

In every city, every town, every village through which he passed, he laid his hands upon the afflicted ones and healed them.

Wherever there were hearts ready to receive his message, he comforted them with the assurance of their Heavenly Father's love.

His life was 1 of constant self-sacrifice.

His gift of mercy and love was as unconfined as the air, the light or the showers of rain that refresh the earth.

He made no difference between neighbors and strangers, friends and enemies.

He passed by no human being as worthless.

He's the 1 that we're supposed to learn to be like.

What an unbelievable standard of what he was and what we as his servants, as we're trying to minister to others, can be.

How in the world can we ever learn to be like that by his grace?

Now before I go on, I want to share just right here at the beginning the life of my favorite missionary.

How many of you in the room have heard of C.T.

A couple hands, And that's how it usually is.

I ask crowds pretty much everywhere, how many of you have heard of C.T.

And usually about 1% will raise their hands.

And sometimes it blows my mind, I'm like, why?

But I think actually this morning I realized for the first time why he is.

He was born in the year 1860 to a very wealthy, very upper class family in England.

And as he was growing up, he went to all of England's best schools.

He joined England's, he distinguished himself very early as an outstanding cricket player.

And so by the time he was in college, he was 1 of England's very best cricket players.

And he was a household name in England because of how phenomenal he was at cricket.

So were his brothers who were also on the team.

Also he became a household name in Australia because of the games between cricket, with cricket between England and Australia.

And he also became known somewhat in America.

Extremely famous, late teens, early 20s, brilliant athlete.

His father, who was just a complete man of the world, ended up being convinced by 1 of his father's friends to go listen to Dwight Moody when he was on 1 of his tours from the United States and he was converted.

And then he began to set his mind to his son's conversion.

Multiple, 3 sons, all of their conversion.

And it took some time, but within a few years, all 3 sons were brought to Christ.

Sun was still brilliantly famous, very wealthy father, super successful in life, and so he said he spent 6 years, he accepted Christ but he didn't share him because he figured he would just be a Christian and continue on with his brilliant career.

After a while he said he lived 6 years in a backslidden condition.

The end of 6 years when Moody came back to England he went to hear him and was reconverted.

And he decided to give his life completely, turn his whole life over to Christ.

He said that Christ had given everything for him, how could he not do the same in return?

And so he ended up going to China as a missionary to serve under Hudson Taylor.

Just around that time he turned 25 and when he turned 25 He inherited from his father who had passed away a couple years before a sum which in about today's equivalence would amount to about $25 million.

25 years old, on his 25th birthday he inherits this sum of money.

And he decided, he thought about what to do with it, and he decided that after looking at Christ's example, he wanted to live as much like his master as he could.

About 5000000 to China Inland Mission, about 5000000 to George Mueller, about 5000000 to Dwight Moody, and a couple other entities that he gave.

He gave the last remaining 3 million to his fiancée as a wedding present, and she came to him and she said, Charlie, what did our master do, And what did he say about this?

And he said, well, he said, sell all that you have and give to the poor.

And she said, I think we should start clean on our wedding day.

And that couple, I'm not saying that God is calling every person to do exactly what the studs did, but I'm sharing with you the story of my favorite missionary, okay?

So, right after that, they sailed to China and they lived in China for quite a few years, ministered there.

After that, they came back because of her health, lived in England for a few years, then went to India as a missionary, came back because of health.

Studd to be a missionary now because his health was so poor, this is later on in his life.

And he decided without anyone's support, he wanted to go to Africa because he saw this sign that said cannibals want missionaries.

And he thought, well, for more reason than 1, and I'm going.

And so he went to Africa and he spent the rest of his life there, died in his 80s.

And the motto of his life, and maybe this will be a little bit more recognizable to some of you than his actual name is, was, some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell.

I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell.

He brought thousands and thousands of people to Christ.

Reading the things that he wrote while he was a missionary is the most inspiring thing you could ever do.

And I thought to myself, how does this man end up like so obscure, nobody knows about C.T.

Studd anymore, hardly, when Hudson Taylor's famous, George Mueller's famous, they all know about these other names and he was their contemporary.

Dwight Moody is famous, he brought just as many people to Christ.

Just this morning, I remembered something that he wrote.

The news media descended upon the Alamo Dome, and whether it was ABC or NBC or CBS, or 1 of the Fox affiliates, whether it was the San Antonio newspapers, all of the reporters asked us 1 single question, why?

And the answer was very simple, We're doing this because of what Christ has done.

Jesus touched the eyes of the blind and they were open, touched the ears of the deaf and they were unstopped.

And Jesus ministered unselfishly and tirelessly, And that is our motivation.

It's the motivation of the 1 that has done more for us than we could possibly imagine.

I observed smiling, gracious people at registration, no matter what challenge they faced.

I observed chaplains working lines of people, telling people that they had to go home because we were already filled up in our services, in dental particularly, And I watched how those chaplains diplomatically handled the crowd.

I was there in vision and dental, there in medical services, watching medical care providers provide so graciously and lovingly, noted the nutrition demonstrations that people were so interested in and wanting a better life, saw the media team working together, watched those giving out literature, beheld some giving massages, although I didn't receive 1.

Saw our wellness team from Weimar just doing such an outstanding job.

Every place I looked, the hospitality group, there was a real synergy, a real working together.

The 1 skill that I wish I would have had a little more adeptly this week was dental, because I had to turn away 700 people and I wish that I could have pulled a few more teeth outside.

Now I do have some dental practice in case some of you are unaware.

I worked on the Amazon River when I was 21 years old and did pull a number of teeth.

I will tell you about the first patient that I had on the Lucero 6 and my first experience at Dento.

I was working far up the Amazon River and I knew 2 Portuguese words, obra and fecha.

And Our dentist that taught me told me, now Mark, he said, look, we have so many patients today that you're going to have to help me pull teeth.

We had little anesthesia then and Novocaine in those days, and I didn't have any sophisticated dental chairs like we have here.

All I had was a little stool on the deck of our boat, and so I sat the lady down and he had told me how to put her head on my knee, how to say, obra, and pull the tooth, which I tried to do.

And the first attempt wasn't too skillful, and the second might have been worse, because it takes a lot of arm strength to pull teeth, they often don't just fall out.

And so I kept working and working and working and pulled out the tooth, and I was so proud, called the dentist and said, Doc, I did it!

He came over and sat me, and he looked, and he looked at me, and he said, you pulled the wrong 1.

So if there is a lady in the Amazon today watching 3ABN who I've pulled the wrong tooth, I'm exceedingly sorry.

I'm so glad we had skilled dentists and that I didn't have to work the line this week.

Thank you for what you have done for Christ this week.

Father in heaven, we thank you so much for the call to serve like Jesus.

How boring life would be if we were wrapped up in the little packages of ourselves.

How narrow life would be if it were circumscribed to our own joys and pleasures.

How empty life would be if it all involved around our super egos.

We're thankful for the call of ministry for our own sake because as we serve we're blessed, as we minister we're ministered to, as we share with others you share with us, And as we share your grace and love, grace from the cross and from the sanctuary flows into our own hearts.

And tonight, teach us from your word, we pray thee, that you'd touch our lives and this would be a life-changing service.

Give us vision, not only of what we've done, but what you long for us to do yet.

I've chosen this evening the topic, the Master's Methods.

Evans was a surgeon here in America who went on a short-term mission trip to Korea.

And there he worked with a career missionary who was working in the remote mountain villages up in the northern section of that wonderful country of Korea.

Evans tells the story about, the career missionary was doing surgery in a makeshift tent.

Our surgical procedures this week were much more sophisticated than that 1, and I thank God for the over 200 surgeries that we did here this week.

Evans tells the story of going in to a very traumatic stomach surgery.

And he stood by the side of his colleague as for hour after hour he operated on a tumor in a particular Korean peasant woman's stomach.

But hour after hour, the steady hands of that godly physician worked tirelessly over that woman.

After 7 hours, the operation was over, and The physician simply smiled, pulled up his mask and he said, Dr.

And as they came back to the modest office of that physician, the physician sat down in his chair and took a deep breath and he said, Doc, she'll survive.

Evans looked at his friend and he said, I have a question for you.

How much are you going to get for an operation like that out here?

I know what I'd get in the States, but how much would you get?

And the doctor said, the surgeon said, to begin with, I'd get this.

And he reached down, pulled out the drawer of his desk, and he said, I'd get this old, dirty, dented copper coin.

She came in here a couple of weeks ago and I gave her the diagnosis about the operation and she said, Doc, how much is it going to cost?

And I said, well, how much can you afford?

And she looked at her old ragged purse, she pulled out this old dented copper coin and said, Doc, this is all I can afford.

And he said, the first thing I'd get this is this old dented coin.

But then he said, but most of all, I have the priceless awareness that for 7 hours, these hands become the hands of Jesus ministering to 1 of his needy children.

As you work this week in dental and stood for hour after hour after hour, you have the priceless awareness that Jesus is working through your hands.

As a physician this week, as you worked laboring in that little cubicle and you stood, you have the priceless awareness that Jesus is working through these hands.

As you worked in registration or hospitality or vision, whatever your assignment was, There was a sense that Christ was there.

Did you not see Him smiling through you this week and touching people through you this week?

Jesus at times has no eyes but our eyes to see the needs of human beings.

He has no hands but our hands to touch them.

He has no heart but our heart to love them.

He has no ears but our ears to hear their cry of woe.

Jesus sees through our eyes, He listens through our ears, He speaks through our voice, He loves through our heart, He touches through our hands.

Some time ago, Sister Teresa had a heart difficulty, and she needed a stent in her heart.

And a friend of mine is very good friends, in fact, business colleagues with her cardiologist.

And he told me this story that Sister Teresa's cardiologist told him.

Sister Teresa had gone in for her, or Mother Teresa had gone in for her stent there in India, you know, and She was the amazing commitment to the poor, the underprivileged, providing them medical treatment.

And she had gone in and gotten this stent in her heart.

And after she did that, she talked to her cardiologist and she said, you know, I want to spend a day with you in cardiac peds.

I want to go to the children that you've done life-saving heart operations on And I want to walk through the ward with you." And he said, fine.

And he said it was kind of amazing all that day, 5 hours, 6 hours, 7 hours in the ward to have Mother Teresa by his side.

And all she did was pray and pray at every bedside.

Finally at the end of the day, this Hindu physician in India came to a little boy.

The little boy was about 2 and a half to 3 pounds, and the cardiologist surgeon had performed a very delicate cardiac operation on this little 2 and a half to 3 pounder.

The little baby had the tubes up his nose and intravenous.

The cardiologist held up the little baby in his arms before Mother Teresa and he said, Mother Teresa, I just have 1 question.

Where is He in this baby's life?" And without missing a beat, Mother Teresa said, you know, doctor, God's pretty busy today because He had 750, 000 other kids to take care of like this.

Staying Focused

It's a blessing to be with you today, and really, the Word plants the seed, right?

Let's just bow our heads and ask the Lord to be with us as we get into the Word tonight.

Father in heaven, Lord, we're thankful for your Word.

Scriptures say that you send your word and it brings healing.

We ask that your word would bring healing to us today and to our hearts and would embolden and empower us.

We're tired after working today and yesterday, but it's a good kind of tired, and we ask that you would buoy our spirits up.

Tonight I wanna look at Daniel chapter 9 with you, health evangelism.

Over the last few years, you know, since really ASI Pacific Union, when we started there in San Francisco long ago, And as Randy mentioned, I guess the small part I had to play was trying to challenge the Pacific Union with a rather inflammatory sermon, which I thought would be my last speaking appointment for ASI.

And then Leila said, would you join the board?

Of course, I didn't do that because I was on a couple of those already and I didn't want to get overboard.

But we went to San Francisco and it was amazing there in San Francisco.

I think It shocked me actually to see what happened.

I still remember a young man that was talking with me and he said to me, why are you here?

I heard you had something to do with this.

He said, this is a place where people get hurt.

This is a place where people are injured.

No 1 in this section of the town is up to any good.

Of course, we were in a pornography, a building that had a pornography studio in it, and I didn't really realize that until my students had showed up at the wrong side of the building.

And I was trying to see how to explain that to Dr.

Bivens, but anyway, I said, you're on the wrong side of the building.

This man said, this is a place of darkness.

He came to me a couple days later and he said, this was a place of darkness.

I can't believe that no 1 has been hurt, and you have turned this place and your team into a place of light.

You know, I've been working with the Lifestyle Counseling and Coaching booth with Karen and Henry, my co-leaders, and the rest of our team from Weimar and then some folks that have joined us.

It's kind of like working at Weimar here.

But as we've talked to people, we see them right at the end.

We were gifted to be able to have education, this and that, and we want to give back.

Then others say, well, it's because of what Jesus did.

You remember in Acts chapter 10 verse 38 where it tells about how Jesus was anointed.

God, Acts chapter 10 verse 38, God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost.

How did you know that he was the anointed 1?

Well, because he went about doing good and healing.

And really that gave more evidence than a dove coming down on a voice from heaven or a sermon.

It was those first 3 and a half years of ministry that really showed who the Messiah was.

But there was another reason that he went about doing good.

16 times in the book of Matthew it says that it might be fulfilled.

And then in Luke it talks about how the Spirit of the Lord would anoint him and he would heal the brokenhearted and the recovery of sight to the blind and all those different things.

And then you remember how John's disciples were wondering whether or not this was the Christ or another would come.

And in Luke chapter 7 and verse 22, Jesus answered and said to them, go, go your way and tell John what things he have seen and heard, how the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised.

So in other words, there was a promotional element as well back then.

It says that they blazed it abroad what happened.

Have you ever noticed how Jesus would heal people and He'd say, Don't tell anyone!

I mean, that's like setting someone up for disobedience.

Because after you have just been healed, you want to tell someone.
