How to Study the Bible, Part 2

Alright, we're just going to get right to it, begin our second session.

Brother Peter, you're still going to give me the same signal, right?

Alright, we're in point number 6 again, but it should be number 7.

But nonetheless, you see meditation there.

We're looking at the proper methods or the points and principles of approaching the scripture, how to gain the most from our gleaning of the scriptures.

We've covered quite a bit so far and we have about 4 more principles to go through before I stop because there's many more things we can cover but just these 4 more.

Let's go back to first Timothy chapter 4.

First Timothy chapter 4 highlights for us why meditation is important.

And we'll start at verse 1, and we're going to read through the chapter.

And I haven't forgotten that you had a question out there or statement.

All right, first Timothy chapter 4 and we'll begin at verse 1.

I'll take a volunteer for the first 3 verses.

Now the spirit speak it expressly that in the latter time some shall depart from the faith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meets, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them, which believe and know the truth.

All right, so in the latter days, this apostate teaching will take place.

There will be people who are deviating from God's word.

Again, just reemphasizing the idea that in the latter days there will be false teachers who come and teach false doctrine in regards to salvation and hypocrisy will be there forbidding to marry, even what to eat or not to eat.

But refuse profane and old wise fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

For bodily exercise profited little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe.

All right, so Paul is instructing Timothy what to teach.

He's cautioning in regards to false teachers in the last days, he's saying shun profane fables that lead to godlessness.

Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Okay, now these are things that he's supposed to, he's instructed to do.

We're going to see why meditation is important in a moment.

Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

All right, that he's, hands have been laid on him.

That there's gonna be all these different things that are gonna transpire amongst God's people.

And he's saying, hold on, meditate upon these things.

They are going to protect you from something.

Take heed unto thyself and unto the doctrine.

Continue in them, for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.

You're going to save yourself and them that hear.

But if you don't pay attention, if you don't meditate on what Paul's just said to him, it's going to go fleeting from your mind, it's gonna go quickly from you.

So you need to meditate on what I'm telling you.

If you don't think about it, if you don't let it sit into your mind, people are gonna follow you, they're gonna be lost, and you're gonna be lost as well.

For the law shall not be part out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe and do according to all that is written therein.

For then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

I mean, have you ever thought about something so much that in your sleep you think about it?

I've gone to sleep sometimes thinking about things and I wake up with music in my head.

Songs, I wake up with a song of Zion in my mind.

I remember when I was called to ministry and I was running from it.

You don't understand, I'd rather, I don't understand man, I'd rather do anything but preach.

I laid my head down to sleep, and there was a song that I had never heard before.

They were singing up in heaven such as we have never known.

Where the angels sing the praises of the Lamb upon the throne.

And I went to sleep and that song played in my mind.

I said, Father, thank you for speaking to me.

Thinking and praying, these things go to you even in your sleep.

Meditate on it day and night continuously.

All right, sister, go ahead and read for us.
