Now here's your host, Joe Reeves, with Inverse.

We are studying the Bible again, as we always do on Inverse, where we go into the text.

My friends, I've got Jemima here joining us today.

And her husband has been on recently, RJ.

And I just learned you are a psychiatric nurse.

This is gonna be very enlightening Bible study.

This is who we love to study the Bible with and with you.

And so this season we are studying growing in a relationship with God And we have been diving in and learning many things.

Maybe since Sharon is just joining us at the table here on episode number 4, can you catch her up to speed?

What have we been talking about and studying so far this season?

Oh, we've been talking about a relationship with God, why it's important to know God, how we can know the Lord.

We've been talking about things like pride that have such an impact on that relationship.

And now we're going into a whole new part of this relationship with God and talk a little bit about scripture.

Anything else you've captured from the last few?

I love the first episode, we're talking about God extending that invitation, knocking on the doors of our hearts.

And a lot of times our condition is hot, no, lukewarm.

Not hot nor cold, we're just in the middle there.

And God doesn't know what to do with us because we cannot make a decision.

So God calling us to make a commitment, choose me or don't choose me, I have a solution for both.

So let's ask God to bless our study today as we look at the role of scripture in our relationship with God.

And Sharnette, would you bless us with prayer?

Dear Father God, thank you so much for this opportunity to study your word.

We know that we cannot understand this in it of ourself.

And so we ask your presence to be with us in our hearts.

We're going to read a very dynamic passage of scripture and unpack it.

It's a letter to his young intern, pastoral intern.

And Paul is writing to encourage him, to give him instruction in pastoral ministry, to tell him how to take care of these churches that he is looking out after.

And so this instruction is not just for Timothy though, It's for all of us.

And Jemima, could you read 2 Timothy 3 and verses 10 through 15?

But You have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, long suffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra.

What persecutions I endured, and out of them all, the Lord delivered me.

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

But evil men and imposters will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

But you must continue in the things which you have learned and be assured of knowing from whom you have learned them and that from childhood you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Okay, lots going on, persecution, deception, but he brings it to the scriptures.

And Paul, help us understand what's being talked about here.

What is the reason that we come to the scriptures?

The Lord is giving us the gift of Scripture, 1, because the Lord knows that there are impostors, there's falsehood, and Scripture is given to us to navigate through that, to point us to what is truth.

But more also in the positive sense, it's given to make us wise unto salvation, to know what we need to do, how we need to live now that the gift of salvation is now given to us.

So these are the gifts given to us from Scripture.

Someone, there's a reformer in the Middle Ages by the name of John Calvin, a great hero of the faith.

And he shared 3 uses, 3 benefits we get from Scripture.

Another use of Scripture is, he said, it's like a restraint on evil.

You read Deuteronomy chapter 28, and the Lord shares blessings and curses for those who keep the covenant and those who disobey.

And he says, it keeps you from, there's a warning light that goes off in your head.

Scripture is that warning light as we remember it.

And finally, he said, Scripture is something that helps us know what pleases God.

You don't have to go on pilgrimages or pay penance or whatever.

Scripture clearly tells us what is it that pleases the Lord.

And you think about this life that we're in, right?

There's a lot of dangerous territory, right?

And in 1 of the episodes we're talking about in John 17, how Jesus says that you may know the true God, which means there are a lot of other false gods out there.

And when you do know the true world, how do you navigate this world?

And you think of people in a war zone or whatever, they have maps, you know, this is where you go, stay away from this area.

And the Bible serves as that to ensure that we stay on the right path and we kind of stay away from all the threats and traps that are around us.

And I see it more now in our society, the postmodernism, right?

Your truth is your truth, my truth is my truth, right?

It's very subjective and it's not concrete.

And I know in my practice, a lot of my patients have difficulty with identity.

And that's because it's lacking the knowledge of objective truth.

There's really a lot of confusion as a result of lack of understanding the truth.
