9 - George the Bigot

Dear Lord, make me a nail upon the wall, fasten securely in its place.

Then from this thing so common and so small, hang a bright picture of thy face.

At this hour, we'd like to share with you friends in the science of worship, the fact that God is not partial.

This message will cluster around an individual whom I'm going to call George, George the bigot.

It was another country where my wife and I were conducting a series of evangelistic meetings.

In fact, we were in that land for many years.

And he looked down on people of all other races.

When I was a boy, back home, my daddy had black hens and white hens and brown hens and all different color hens.

And I didn't find any hen saying, look, you're brown, I don't like you, pick, pick, pick.

Or you're white, I don't like you, or you're black, pick, pick, pick.

My father had black cows, he had white cows, he had brown cows, He had different colored cows.

Nobody said, oh, look at that, that color.

My, I want to tell you how my brother and I used to like to ride those horses.

Brother, we had 1 had a 1 was a little black horse with a little white in its forehead.

And I had a little Arabian horse, and those horses, my brother and I would get on those horses, and we'd ride bar back.

It seemed like the horses knew exactly where we wanted to go.

We didn't do that when daddy and mother were around, you understand.

And we scared the daylights out of the neighbors.

We just whisper in 1 of those horses' ears, come on, black beauty, Come on, Brownie.

And those horses would lop those ears and they'd go like, gee-hoo.

As I think back over that, I say, thank you, Lord.

We had a wonderful time with all colored horses, all colored chickens, all colored colors of cows, and human beings made in the image of God can stick up a nose.

He wasn't merely a racial bigot, he was a religious bigot.

We were to hold a series of meetings in his city.

But he heard that a group of Sabbath keepers were going to pitch a galvanized tabernacle and begin some meetings in that city.

And so you know, friends, You know what a bigot would do?

He went around to a minister and another minister and another minister and another minister, and he said, look, these Sabbath keepers are coming here.

A Sabbath-keeping preacher is coming here, and you have a duty.

Your duty is to come and sit on the front seats of his tabernacle and right in the middle of his sermon you interrupt him.

You embarrass him so much he'll get out of here so fast.

And when the opening night arrived and our tabernacles crammed, jammed in full of people, hundreds I believe on the outside beside, not 1 preacher of another denomination was there to confuse us.

You know friends, let's not look down on people of other denominations.

Let's not look down on people of other nationalities.

Let us not look down on people of other races.

So these wonderful ministers, they were suddenly keeping saints.

Not 1 of them would come and take this non-Christian attitude, not 1.

And so George was quite upset, greatly upset in fact.

He didn't want to expose himself when none of the ministers would show up to confuse us.

I knew as I say nothing about this whatsoever.

When we had been holding our meetings maybe a couple or 3 weeks, we came to the subject of the Sabbath.

And I was showing slides through a stereopticon on a screen and we had slides with texts of Scripture, we had slides where the artist's concepts of those that were connected with these scriptures.

Like at creation, we had the artist's concept of Jesus as creator.

Down through the wilderness wanderings of Israel, the artist's concept of how they were gathering manna and so on and on and on.

But there was 1 slide I realized I needed.

I wanted a little slide that would constitute my covenant with the Lord.

And I said, you know, after I share some of this message, wouldn't it be nice to give people the privilege of saying, dear Lord, you've sent me more light.

And Jesus has said, walk in the light while you have the light.

Why shouldn't I put also on the screen a little covenant that would indicate their decision to let Jesus continue to be the Lord of their life, the light of their life, and as continuing light should shine upon their pathway.

Lord, come into my life continually and help me by your grace to walk in this light.

I asked some people, I said, Can you tell me who might be able to make a slide such as I would like they said yes, mr.

George Well, where is he they said right down here just took 3 4 blocks away I said wonderful so I either drove down or walked down to Mr.

And as I walked in and told him what I would like, he was not a very big man, but all there was to him was strutted.

Did you ever see a thoroughbred registered strut?

And I want to tell you, he knew he was important.

He knew he was 1 of the most important men on that island.

Isn't it wonderful for a man to know how very important he is?

In contrast with people of other religious persuasions, people of other nationalities, people of other colors.

And I explained what I would like, and he began to tell me what a man he was.

He said, sir, I have been patronized by royalty.

Man, you could almost see the peacock plumes.

Every bit the beautiful, thoroughbred, registered egotist.

Of course, it didn't take me long to sum him up, or size him up.

He thought he could fill most any suit even a 42, but he's really about a 23 size So I said now I would like this slide if it would be possible on such-and-such a night Would it be possible if I were to pick this up late in the afternoon?

He said, sir, when I give you my word, I will keep my word.

He bent so straight up, he almost went backwards.

8 - Beth’s Mate Returns

Dear Lord, make me just a nail upon the wall, fastened securely in its place.

And we thank you for hearing us in Jesus name, Amen.

Friends we're discussing the philosophy, the philosophy of worship, the philosophy of worshiping the wonderful God whom we adore and how our relationship to the Lord changes our relationship to those closest to us.

The experience that I wish to share with you at this time has to do with Beth and with her husband whose name we're going to call Dirk.

Because as she shared with us the experience, I just about made up my mind that he was about as near to dirt as he could be.

Before I share this experience with you, let us review a little bit concerning the philosophy of worship.

Duggar, who was explaining the philosophy of law and how he was taught by that wise professor in college.

He was taught how important the philosophy of law is, and how my wife and I felt impressed that this is true with God's law.

It is true with the center of his law, the Sabbath, the worship commandment, you see, that has to do with the worship day.

And we noticed 4 particular expressions that we'd like to introduce the subject with.

And the first is the word worship, which we dealt with in a previous broadcast.

The word worship as found in Revelation the 14th chapter verses 6 and 7 is used 59 times in fact in the New Testament coming from an original word that means to kiss the hand toward.

So when the Bible says that we should worship our creator, as we find we are commanded to do in the fourth commandment, we are to have the relationship of love, which means that we're not bowing down to him purely on the basis of his being bigger than we are.

We do stand in awe of this marvelous majestic power.

We kiss the hand toward because, as 1st John 4 19 says, we love him because he first loved us.

So our worship of him is not the worship of a monster.

It's the response in the human heart toward Him who loved us with an everlasting love.

It is our response toward the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world.

Jesus, the greatest lover this world has ever known.

Closely associated with this is another term found in Exodus the 31st chapter verses 15 to 17.

Here the Lord says, because he made the heavens and the earth in 6 days and rested the seventh, So his people should do the same and it says here the Sabbath day is a sign between him and his people.

The word sign has many synonyms, mark, trademark, banner, token.

So the Holy Sabbath day worship is a token between the Lord and His people.

And you will, if you've studied at all the original word from which this word sign comes, you'll find that the sign is a significant token.

This is the significance of worship in other words.

Sign being a part of the basis of significance.

And the word sign, the word from which sign is translated, is also found in the Bible, translated miracle.

Boiled down together, we summarize it this way.

God's holy Sabbath day is a love miracle token of our relationship with Him.

Now, when we come to the next expression, we'll find what the basis is of this miracle.

He says in the same text, namely Exodus 31, 15 to 17, he said, it is a sign between me and the children of Israel.

The word Israel is definitely a spiritual term.

And it draws its significance from the day that, from that night that Jacob was pleading and wrestling with an angel, you remember, found in the 32nd chapter of the book of Genesis.

Jacob was to face his brother who was coming to meet him.

And so he drew aside that night, pleading with God to come to his rescue.

And someone appeared and wrestled with him until the day was breaking.

And then it dawned over Jacob when the stranger touched his thigh and it was disjointed.

It dawned over Jacob that it was the Lord.

And then he cried out, Lord, I can't let you go, except you bless me.

And this great angel of the covenant replied, I must go.

In deep humility, he was pleading the mercy of God.

And the Lord turned to him and said, what's your name?

You see, Bible names had a special significance.

When he was named Jacob, it meant that he was a deceiver, a supplanter, shrewd, crafty.

The Lord indicated immediately that he was going to give to him a new character.

Your name from henceforth will be Israel.

You have prevailed with God in this agony, this humble agony, this crying out indicating your utter helplessness.

Your name now will be Israel, a prevailer.

You see, my friends, when we put the word worship, the word sign, and the word Israel together, we come up with this.

The Holy Worship Day is God's beautiful token of a love relationship that exists between Him and His people based on the miracle of the change of heart that our Creator imparts to the suppliant.

No wonder we read in Ezekiel 36, verse 26, a new heart also will I give you.

I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh.

On the basis of the miraculous power of our Creator to change the heart, the Holy Sabbath day is a miracle love token by which we kiss the hand toward our Lord.

And he has so demonstrated and manifested his love toward us.

He has so infilled us with this love that the overflow of this love extends to all of God's creatures.

In Psalm, the 60th Psalm, in the fourth verse, we read these words, Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed, that it may be displayed because of the truth." God's banner, God's sign, God's token, God's love miracle day of worship, This text says, should be displayed.

The character of our Lord should be displayed in our philosophy of worship.

The word displayed comes from an original word, and be surprised now, I was astonished, I could hardly believe my eyes when I checked into it and found the original word from which the word displayed comes means to show with self fleeing.

In other words, as we display the philosophy of Sabbath worship, The way by which we display it is with self slipping into the background and showing forth to others with whom we come in contact this blessed revelation of the wonderful love of Jesus Christ.

Who when he was reviled, he reviled not again." My friends, this is the philosophy.

This is a vital part of the philosophy of Sabbath worship.

Self slips away into the discard, into the background.

Out in front there's a magic dramatization of the character of our maker, Jesus Christ and his love.

And now we want to share with you the story of Beth.

We were conducting a series of meetings in her church.

And Beth was attending night after night.

And we were endeavoring to present in our own feeble way for who can really present the love of God as it should be.

We're trying to present this beautiful love of Jesus Christ.

This is a love that goes out in love and respect to one's enemies.

Night after night we kept hammering on the love of God.

Beth came to us early in the series with a problem.

She shared with us the experience for about a full hour in the pastor's study.

And friends, I must admit that as Beth shared this experience, my whole soul arose in indignation against Dirk, for Dirk had left his little children, helpless children, destitute.

7 - Suicidal Storm -- Super Serenity

Our Heavenly Father, we come to you through the merits of Jesus.

And because of the wonderful love and example of our Lord, we ask just to make me a nail on the wall, fastened securely in its place.

Then from this thing so common and so very small, please hang a bright picture of thy face.

Our topic at this hour, friends, is 1 of the most important of all topics that could ever be presented to a group of fellow Christians.

It is so important that there are 826 texts of Scripture that command it or enjoin it or teach it.

If the Bible makes a command, gives a command once, a clear-cut, simple command once, we're to obey it, aren't we?

We shouldn't wait for the Lord to repeat it twice, right?

If it's a simple, clear-cut, plain command once, We should follow it.

But when he makes a command or he teaches us in 800 and more scriptures, It must follow that it's extremely, extremely important.

The individual whose experience I want to share with you most prayerfully is that of a friend of ours whom we have known for nearly 50 years.

Back in college days, I knew this young lady as a young lady.

I remember that I was leading music 1 night in a religious service at the college at which she was in attendance and I was happy and rejoicing and leading the people in joy.

And she was sitting there looking at me philosophically.

A philosopher is 1 who has a love of wisdom.

And she saw no love for this kind of a joyous Christianity.

She wanted wisdom, but she couldn't see any wisdom to being happy.

She saw the wisdom of opening the books with a good scowl, learning facts.

But 1 of the greatest facts of the Christian life she had never learned to incorporate in her life.

That is the special, special law of communication called joy or rejoicing or praising the Lord or giving thanks for our blessings based on 826 texts of Scripture.

There must be something very special that is promised to his children if we will learn joy, rejoicing, praising, thanking God from the very depths of our being.

I kept on in my rejoicing philosophy, a part of the time.

When the sun shone brightly on my Christian experience, I was rejoicing.

People thought I was a very happy individual, and I was for the most part.

And in those crises times of my life, I found that I failed.

I didn't realize that Jesus, who died on Calvary, has promised not to permit anything to come to me greater than I'm able to bear.

He has said that tribulation, if I make the right response to it, creates patience, James chapter 1, verses 1 and 2, Romans 5, verses 3 to 5.

I had read where Paul said, we glory in tribulation, knowing that tribulation works patience, and patience experience, and experience hope.

And hope maketh not a shame because the love of God is shed abroad in the heart.

I'd never placed this love of God that is shed abroad in the heart as having anything to do with rejoicing in trouble, but God puts them together.

And the Lord places faith and joy together.

And God places humility and joy together.

The Lord says in Romans 15, 13, through his inspired apostle, there's joy and peace in believing.

If I will believe that God, who gave his son to die for me, will permit no experience to come into my pathway, except that which is calculated, to refine what little gold is there, and to remove all the drosses there, and to prepare me to be with the blessed throughout eternity where there'll be no word of murmur, not a whisper of discontent throughout the ages of eternity.

And in this school of life, I want to learn the lessons so that I can graduate and go back to glory land with the saints of God throughout eternity, Saved by the power of Jesus Christ.

So many times in my experience, I failed under the awful weight of temptation and disappointments.

I failed to be that happy, bubbling over, rejoicing Christian that I was at other times.

And my friends had made a tremendous impact on my experience Lord, how is it that even as a minister?

I've rejoiced Why I've rejoiced thousands of times and then when that terrible crisis our strikes I?

Fail to realize that the Christ who died on Calvary for me, had there not been another, so do I have accepted him.

He will never permit any temptation to come to me until first he filters it.

And he said, there's no temptation that'll take you, but such is as common to man.

God is faithful, Kuhn, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you're able, but he will with the temptation make a way of escape that you may be able to bear it.

And there were times I'd completely forget this.

And I also found myself forgetting many times the text of scripture, Nehemiah 8, 10, which really is an equation.

It says joy plus the Lord equals strength.

This was told to the children of God in Old Testament times, when because of their great sorrow for their sin, they were giving themselves over to complete sorrow.

And even when they made a new start, they went home under cloud, or were about to go home under cloud, having made a new start in Christ.

And Nehemiah said, don't go home sorrowfully.

Every sin you've ever committed, he's put behind his back, down in the depths of the sea.

Don't now go home sorrowfully, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

But as the years came and went, I began to realize, dear Lord, a vital part of the gospel of Jesus Christ is to know that all things work together for good to them that love the Lord, Romans 8, 28.

And when I know that my Lord and Master is in charge of my life, then I can say there's joy and peace in believing.

When I realize that the Lord says, I'll save your children, though everything seems to be against it, circumstances seem to forbid that they'll ever change.

I have said in Isaiah 49, 25, I will save your children.

When I realize that, there's joy and peace in believing.

I can look up in the face of God and say, Lord, God is not a man that he should lie, Neither the Son of Man that he should repent.

Hath he spoken and shall he not make it good?
