Hello friends. Welcome to the Seed Pod for kids. Thank you for joining me today as we spend time with our friend Jesus. Spending time with Jesus is the best way to start your day. Let's begin our time together praising him. I love how many of the writers of these popular hymns were normal people, just like you and me. The words to this hymn was written by John Henry Yates. He was born in a little town in New York. In 1837, he sold shoes for a living and ended up being the manager for a hardware store for 15 years. He also received his license to preach in Methodist churches, but later he switched to preaching in Baptist churches. Mr. Yates sent the words to this hymn to a man named Era Sanky who wrote the music and it's become the beloved hymn we know today. Faith is the victory To Him that shall Begin Before the angels. He shall know his name from the hills of night. Our hearts with love, flame, Jesus name, victory. A victory, Oh Is victory that overcomes the world. Welcome back to Teach Me to Pray. We have been learning for the past couple weeks about prayers in the Bible, different prayers that we looked at and we studied, and we also looked at why we pray because Jesus prayed, he's our example, right? And the apostles, they were men of prayer. And when they were men of prayer, they were men of power. So we can have that power too. And another reason why we pray is cuz God works through us to accomplish his will. It's like prayer releases his power. We're supposed to always pray and not lose heart, and God invites us to reason or to talk with him. Now, when we say prayer, a lot of times people think closing your eyes, bowing your head, folding your hands, maybe even kneeling down. But prayer is really just talking to God. So you can pray as you're playing. You can pray as you're driving. You can pray as you're working. There's all kinds of ways that you can pray. Now, many people think that they're not good enough to come to God or to talk to him or that he doesn't care about them, but did you know that God encourages us to come to Him? Yes, he does. Our prayer verse today is Matthew chapter 11, verses 28 through 30. Now, if you have your prayer journal, go ahead and today's verse, you can write it down, Matthew chapter 11 verses 28 through 30. And parents, go ahead, feel free to help your child to write this down, or you could write it down and have them copy it. It has all of the kind of key things that we're talking about with each verse week by week. So you can download that, have it on your phone or your computer or print it out, and that way you can follow along with us and help your child to be able to really get the most out of this per journal and out of this time together. All right, so kids, back to you. And I'm not just gonna talk to your parents, I'm talking to you. So look up Matthew chapter 11 verses 28 through 30. And if you need more time, I know I'm going a little faster with the Teach Me to Pray program. You can pause this recording and then when you're ready, press play again. Let's see what Matthew chapter 11 versus 28 through 30 says, God wants us to come to him. And that's what we're going to look at this week. Bible verses that talk about coming to God. So in verse 28 it says, come to me all you who labor and our heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yo upon you and learn from me. For I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Now we're gonna practice praying this Bible text. So you can do this as well. It takes a little bit of practice, but once you practice a little bit, it gets easier and easier and you can incorporate this verse into your prayer time. So here's what we're going to do. You can listen to what I say and kind of follow along. Look at the verse 28 through 30. Here's how I would pray this prayer to God. I would say something like this, dear Father, thank you for telling me to come to you, that when I am busy working and when I have lots of burdens, you will give me rest. Help me to take your yolk upon me. Help me to learn from you. Help me to to find rest for my soul. Thank you that your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Help me to take those upon myself today. Amen. Do you see how I took that verse and I used it to pray? It can make prayer so much fun. So why don't you try it? Or maybe there's somebody, remember those five people I told you to pray for each and every day? Maybe there's someone who has a lot of burdens. You could pray for that person. So let's say that I have a cousin who has a lot of burdens. I could say something like, Lord, please help my cousin to come to you. Please give them rest. Help them to discover that your yoke is easy and your burden is light, and that they will give their burdens to you. Amen. Do you see how I did that? Isn't that fun? I hope that you practice this. And remember, don't forget to pray for your five people that you're praying for. God's gonna work in a mighty and powerful way in their lives. Hey, boys and girls, we have been talking about Jacob. Do you remember the twins in the Bible, Jacob and Esau? Well, Jacob was the younger twin, and he really wanted the birthright, the special blessing that was given to the oldest son. God had even said that he would get the blessing. But did Jacob wait on God and on his promises? Or did he take matters into his own hands? You are right. He lied to his father in order to get the birthright blessing. We're gonna talk a little bit about lying today and also about how God forgives us. But first, let's bow our heads and pray. Lord, come into our hearts today as we learn and study from Your Word as we learn about this Bible story and what example it can be to us. I pray that you'll help us to learn those lessons and to learn them well in Jesus' name. Amen. Have you ever lied? I've lied before. In fact, when I was, I think I was in fourth grade, maybe I was homeschooled and I did math. Like I had a math workbook that I had to do every day and I didn't really like math and it I love it today, but that's kind of because I understand it better than I did when I was in fourth grade. Well, I don't know if any of you have had long division, but it's where you take one big huge number and you see how many times a smaller number goes into it and there's a special step-by-step process that you have to follow. Well, I didn't learn that step process very well at the time, and so I was very tempted to cheat and to use the answer book or the teacher book that was in our house. And so when my mom wouldn't be looking, I would go and sneak that answer book into my room and then copy down all of the answers and then put it back. Now, that's not a good thing. And the answer book didn't show you how to do the work. And so after a few days when my mom went to check my work and I didn't show how I had gotten the answer, she knew something was up. And sure enough, at first I lied and I was like, no, I I, I don't. I don't know what you mean. But then the truth came out. Now when I lied, do you think that I felt very good? No, I didn't. Whenever I tell a lie, either on accident or maybe purposefully, I always feel bad. And that's a good thing because that's how Jesus wants us to feel. He wants us to feel bad when we do what is wrong. And that feeling helps us to do what is right. It helps us to confess and then we feel better. Finally, when my mom found out that I was using the answer book, it was like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders and I felt so much better. And from then on, I didn't cheat on my math anymore. Well, Jacob lied to his father. He wanted to get that birthright blessing, and that lie made four people very sad and very unhappy. Well, first of all, Rebecca, who was Rebecca? Do you remember? She was Jacob's mom. She felt that everything had been her fault. And she was very, very sorry. And it kind of was, she was the one that started this. But then you look at Isaac. Isaac was Jacob's dad. He felt bad. Why did he feel bad? Because he had insisted that he saw the oldest son should get the birthright, even though God had told him that it was supposed to go to Jacob. So Isaac felt bad and he was sorry. Jacob felt that he had told so many lies that God would never forgive him, that God would never bless him. He was so sorry that he felt as if his heart would break. There have been times when I've done things that were wrong that I felt so bad, I felt like my heart would break. I just felt horrible about it. That's how Jacob was feeling. Now, Esau, he was pretty unhappy too, but he wasn't sorry for his wrong choices. He decided to do something. Let's read about it in Genesis chapter 27, verse 41, Genesis chapter 27, verse 41. Genesis is that first book in the Bible. Then you're gonna look for those big numbers, the chapters Chapter 27. And once you find chapter 27, then you're gonna read verse 41, the little numbers. So let's look. Genesis chapter 27, verse 41. I'm looking it up here to, Ooh, it's right near the end of the chapter. So we're almost to chapter 28, but not quite. Genesis chapter 27, verse 41. Let's see what that says. So Isa hated Jacob of the blessing. Woo, which is Father, bless him. Un Esau sat in his heart The days this morning where my father are at hand, then I will kill my brother Jacob. So what was Esau's plan? His plan was to kill his brother. As soon as his father died, he was like, I'm gonna kill Jacob. Wow, that's really sad, isn't it? Do you think that God was sad for this whole family? Yes. But did he still love them all? Oh yes, he did. Even Esau, even after the choices that Esau had made, God still loved him. Well, Esau must have told someone about his plans to kill Jacob because someone heard about it. Rebecca, go figure the mother who heard the whole thing between Isaac and Esau at the very beginning. Well now Rebecca heard that Esau wanted to kill Jacob and that that was his plan. Let's read verses 42, 43, 44 and 45. Those four verses verse 42 through 45, here's what it says. And the words of Isa, her older son, were told to Rebecca. So she sent and called Jacob, her younger son and said to him, purely your brother Isa comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you Now, therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise plea to my brother Leban in Haram, and stay with him a few days until your brother's fury turns away, until your brother's anger turns away from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I'll send and bring you from there. Why should I? Why should I be breathe also of your both in one day, Verse 43, Rebecca is once again telling Jacob to obey her voice. And she has a plan. This plan is that he goes to her brother's house, layman in Horan, and she said, you know, stay with him for a few days. Just wait until your brother's anger is, is gone, is done. This time, Rebecca's plan was a wise plan. She and Isaac were both worried because they wanted to find a a wife for Jacob that loved God. And all the girls, all the women around them, they were heathens, they worshiped idols and those kinds of things. And so they just didn't, they didn't wanna find someone there for Jacob. So she was like, if you go back to my family's, they love God. Why don't you go find a wife from there? So how long did she think that he would be gone? She just said a few days. She's like, you can go there and then I'll send and bring you back. So now let's read verse 46. Rebecca talks to Isaac about this plan. She wants Jacob to go to her brothers, and here is what she tells her husband, Isaac. Rebecca said to Isaac, I am worried of my wife because of the daughters of half of Jacob takes her life of the daughters of half. Like these cool R dollars of the land look good, let my life be to me. Do you think Isaac is on board with this plan? Hmm, I kinda think he is. He doesn't want Jacob to marry somebody who doesn't love God. Let's read the very next chapter, Genesis chapter 28, and now we're gonna read verses one through five. So 1, 2, 3, 4, and five. Genesis chapter 28, verse one through five. Isaac calls Jacob to him and tells him something. Look at what he says. Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and charged him and said to him, you should not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise. Go to Emran to the house of Bethy, your mother's father, and take yourself a wife from there, the daughters of Leban, your mother's brother, make God almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you that you may be an assembly of peoples and give you the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants with you that you ma and inherited the land and which you are a stranger, which God gave to Abraham, to Isaac, sent Jacob away and he went to Emam, to Labban, the son of Bethel, the Syrian, the brother of Rebecca, the mother of Jacob and Esau. So off Jacob goes, he is on his way to his Uncle Laban's house. And remember, he knows that Esau wants to kill him. So do you think that he's going happily or do you think he's sad? Do you think he might be scared? Yeah, he knew that things were not turning out the way he was expecting. And now off he goes on a journey that's hundreds of miles long. Well, boys and girls, we're gonna continue and see what happened to Jacob in the coming days, but I want you to think about something. God always gladly forgives us when we are truly sorry. And you know what? He's always sad about the unhappiness that our wrong choices. Cause when we do wrong things, there are consequences that happen. It's kind of like if you touch a hot stove, what's gonna happen? You'll get burned, right? Well, when we do things that are wrong, when we make choices that are wrong, there are consequences. Things happen that are a result of that. Have you ever done something wrong but you didn't even feel sorry for doing it? I know sometimes when I do something wrong, it's not so much with siblings anymore. It used to be when I was a kid, but now it might be somebody did something to me and I got upset with them. Or maybe when we're driving or at a grocery store and someone's like, oh, that's mine. And it really wasn't. There's all kinds of things that make us really upset and make us do wrong choices or make wrong choices. And sometimes we don't feel sorry for doing it. But you know what? If you don't feel really sorry, even though you know that what you did was wrong, did you know that you can ask Jesus to help you to feel sorry? Yes. That's what I love, is that when our hearts are not doing what's right, and we don't even wanna do what's right, but we know we should, we can pray and ask Jesus to help us. He's always ready to forgive. Aren't you glad? Let's pray. Lord, thank you for your forgiveness that you are there when we mess up to forgive us and to help us to make things right, Lord, sometimes we don't feel sorry for the wrong things that we do. So we're praying and we're asking that you will change our hearts. Help us to always be ready to forgive. In Jesus name, amen. Our Bible verse today is Genesis chapter 28 15. Behold, I am with you and we'll keep you wherever you go. Now, God was saying this to Jacob, but did you know that He also says this and means this for us. He is with us and will keep us wherever we go. What a wonderful promise. Genesis 28 15, Behold you, wherever you go, behold you, wherever you go. Genesis, you go first. 15.
