My Faith Has Found a Resting Place

Father in heaven, bless us today as we spend some moments now in your word.

And your word is spirit and life, it says in John 6, 63.

Psalm 107, verse 20 says that you sent your word and healed them.

So may your life-giving spirit and may your healing presence be present as we open your word today.

I wanna give you a little bit of a report today.

And I want to invite or welcome the people in Ireland that are watching today as well.

So there's a number of people in Ireland watching.

Wave to them and maybe pan, everybody waves the people in Ireland that are watching.

And I was there just a couple weeks ago and as I was there it was a, I've never, How many of you have ever been to Ireland?

Oh man, you guys, you're gonna have to go with me.

This is a beautiful country and it's green.

And this is why I'm wearing a green bow tie today.

And I have never tied a bow tie before today.

The last time I wore a bow tie, you might remember it fell off during my message.

And I kind of tried to roll with it, but I've heard comments now from people in various parts of the country where I've been.

I remember the time your bow tie came off.

I was like, okay, I'm glad you're getting present truth from the church.

But today I was like, I'm not gonna try and do this.

And then Andreas Mendoza, he is the maestro of maestros, plus he can tie a bow tie.

So if you wanna thank anybody, thank him.

Now, entitled to the message, my faith has found a resting place, and That was our opening hymn.

Not in a man-made creed, I trust the ever-living 1 that he for me will plead.

It is enough that Jesus died and died again for me.

And I think it reflects the mood of people that I met in Ireland.

You'll notice that the melody for that opening hymn was written by William Kirkpatrick.

And I wish we had an elder named Patrick, that would be great.

But Patrick is of course the person who brought Christianity largely, there were some others before him, but he largely brought Christianity to Ireland and formed the Kirk.

And the Kirk is a word that means circle or church.

If you go to Ireland, you would see many, many old churches that were circles that were founded by Patrick, who baptized over 120, 000 people in a few short years.

Some of us might be here for the first time.

Patients who attend religious services and participate in other group-related religious activities, sort of like offering, that was a great offering appeal, by the way, was a great benefit to giving offering, experienced a shorter time to remission from depression.

The combination of intrinsic frequent religious attendance, prayer, Bible study, and high religiosity predicted a 53% increase in the speed of remission.

How many of you think that if you had depression, you'd like to get better 53% sooner?

Listen to a song last week entitled, Religion Doesn't Work anymore.

The whole song was by a man who was singing about how religion didn't work for him.

And you know, that is not true, but it's also kind of true.

Because for some people, religion has gone wrong and the way it's been taught.

And this maybe characterizes the experience of some people in Ireland.

Now 2 of the people watching today are Sharon and John that are pictured here, and this is a picture of them they just took yesterday for me.

And I met Sharon at the cafeteria in the student side of the cafeteria, not the New Start side, during the EQ Summit.

And this is a picture of her boarding pass, which we'll talk about later.

I saw her and I sat down next to herself and a guy named Shane.

Shane, how long have you been an Adventist?

I asked him this question, because I got a sense that he was a part of the Adventist faith community.

And he's told me, and then I turned to Sharon, which I think I added an extra A, but that's good, vitamin A is good.

And she said, I'm not, and I really don't have any interest in being a part of a church.

And I thought, well that's direct, that's great.

But then I said, well let me show you something.

And what I showed her was right here on the card.

She took a picture of it and sent it to me yesterday.

And I want to go through that study with you today.

Anyway, I gave that study to her and she was so interested.

I felt like, what in the world's going on?

I mean, normally my church is on the edge of their seat when I'm preaching and they ask me, go longer, go longer.

But Sharon even transcended that interest.

She was just so interested and I thought, that's odd.

And then Shane said, could we get together and study later?

Kristen was there as well, you can see Kristen there.

Well, I got an A minus and I got an A plus at the same time.

So Christina and the rest of us got together later in the day and they said I want to study.

Then Shane said to me, you know, this was such a good study, would you mind coming to Ireland and doing a camp meeting in Western Ireland?

I said, well, who are you and how would you invite me to that?

He says, well, I'm not anybody, but I know somebody.

And ends up 1 of my former students from years ago was now a pastor in Ireland, and they went through all the mechanisms of getting someone called to go to speak in Ireland, and I got this call to come and do the camp meeting in Ireland.

And they said they want to call it the Celtic Revival.

So I had to brush up on my Celtic history and sure enough, went to the camp meeting.

Now I knew that was coming, but before it came, Sharon said, would you mind calling?

I've been giving that Bible study you gave to me at the table to some of my friends, and I have about 6 or 7 people interested in that Bible study.
