7 - My Personal Savior

Dear Lord, make me a nail upon the wall, fasten securely in its place.

Then from this thing so common and so small, hang a bright picture of thy face, and we thank you in Jesus' name.

The topic of this hour's study is My very personal Savior.

And our texts of Scripture are Isaiah 45, verse 22.

Look unto me and be you saved, all you ends of the earth.

Acts 1631, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.

First John 2, 25, And this is the promise that he has promised us, even eternal life.

My wife and I received many, many wonderful letters.

I'm thinking of 2 letters that we received in the mail 1 day, among the many others.

1 was from a teenage girl, perhaps she was 19 years of age.

It was just a one-page letter, casually written, in which she stated, when you're holding a series of meetings at Milo Academy, I was really blessed.

But since then, I have in a special way realized what the ABCs of prayer can mean as Jesus answers my needs.

The first example is that I am engaged to a wonderful consecrated young man.

And then she went on to give the second example.

She said, I do claim him, and she began to underscore.

I do claim him as my very personal, and when she said, when she wrote the word Savior, she underscored it 4 times.

I do claim him as my very personal savior.

I rushed into the other room where my wife was studying.

Teenagers are finding Jesus Christ as their very personal Savior.

It was from a lady perhaps 73 years of age.

She said for 40 years I have believed the quote truth unquote.

But she said during these 40 years, I have never understood how to claim Jesus Christ as my very personal Savior.

But she said as I have read, read 1 of your books on the ABCs of prayer.

I have now placed my hand in the hand of the crucified, and I know that he is my personal Savior.

My friends, It is worth worlds for any human soul to be able to say, Jesus is my very personal Savior.

If you would like, would you open your Bibles with me, if you have 1 handy, and place your finger on the promise of 1 John 2, 25.

It says, and this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

How many times I've invited an audience to place their finger on that promise and where it says us for them to place their first and last names and it would read like this This is the promise that he hath promised Glenn Coon, even eternal life.

Friend, as you view this program, would you like to place your name in the Us, your first and last name, as I place my first and last name in the text together.

And this is the promise that he has promised, Glenn Kuhn, even eternal life.

I remember the first time that I ever inserted my name in that promise.

The Holy Spirit activated the assurance that he was my very personal Savior, and he is my Savior today.

But in order for Him to be our personal Savior, we must fix our gaze on Him.

Isaiah 45, 22 says, look unto me and you will be saved.

All you ends of the earth, in other words, in whatever circumstances you find yourself.

No matter in what sin you may find yourself enmeshed, you may be a prostitute, you may be a homosexual, you may be a thief, You may be a sanctimonious Pharisee, but if you look away from self to Jesus Christ, all of us may be saved.

Any of us may be saved and will be saved as we fix our gaze on him, we emulate him, we follow him in a trusting confidence.

And then Acts 16 31, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.

This is a three-part promise that was given to the jailer at Philippi by Paul.

He was ready to commit suicide, for he thought he would be executed, because the prisoners he thought had escaped, and Paul said, do yourself no harm, we're all here, and he grasped the light and he sprang in, and he said, what must I do to be saved?

Believe on the Lord, believe on Jesus, believe on Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ.

To believe on the Lord means that we simply make Him the Lord of our life.

To believe on Jesus means that while we cannot of ourselves follow his directives, we cannot save ourselves.

We believe on Jesus, Matthew 1 21, thou shall call his name Jesus.

He shall save his people from their sins.

We cannot accomplish salvation ourselves, but he's promised to do it.

So to believe on the Lord Jesus is to permit him to be the Lord of our life, to permit him to save us since we cannot save ourselves.

To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ means that the Christ, which means anointed, John 141, will also anoint us with the Holy Spirit.

We may be spirit-filled And so the Lord becomes the Lord of my life.

Christ fills me with his Holy Spirit and I shall be saved as I continue accepting his Lordship, him as my Savior, and the infilling of his Holy Spirit.

Some time ago, we're holding a series of meetings in a certain city in the United States.

And as we were uplifting Jesus in his beauty, even though in a feeble, human way, we sensed the presence of his Holy Spirit.

About Wednesday night of that week, a man called the pastor at the midnight hour.

He said, Pastor, I've heard something this week that I'm thrilled with.

I've seen a picture of Jesus Christ, and I want to give my life to him.

This man had once been 1 of the outstanding leaders of the church.

He'd been in evangelistic work, and then he lost his hold on the Lord, and he went far out into the world.

But as we sought to uplift Jesus Christ as the personal Savior of ourselves and all who would believe, it struck home to his heart.

And he said, I want to give my life to Jesus.

Early the next morning, the pastor and I met him at his motel room.

And there, He started talking to us about some of his bad habits.

I said, Brother, I don't want to discuss your bad habits.

I want to talk to you about Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, the 1 who is the Lord over all habits of evil.

And as we discussed Jesus and he got his eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, his habits melted away.

Oh, he was so happy as the tears rolled down his cheeks as he gave himself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

During that week, we went over to visit another man who for 69 years had been a professing Christian, but the man had been living a defeated life in Christ.

And as we walked into his home, we knew that he was under the guilt of evil habits.

We did not discuss any of those evil habits.

We talked to him about Jesus Christ, His Lordship.

He is our Savior if we will receive Him, and He will fill us with His Holy Spirit.

As we prayed with Him and then went on our way to the church, we received a message over our CB radio.

Would you immediately go back to this man's home?

When we drove out to his home and walked in the house, this man was in tears.

His daughter had been reading to him from the Gospel of John.

Oh, what a wonderful Gospel to read from.

In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.

We beheld his glory, the glories of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

And as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." This man had found Jesus Christ.

We visited in home after home after home that week, rejoicing in the knowledge that individuals who had been steeped in sin, in various evil habits, who had lost their hold on Jesus Christ, had found new hope, new strength, new faith, new courage in Jesus.

6 - Joyful Trust

The topic of this hour's study is the reward of believing God's promises and fixing our mind on Jesus Christ.

Romans, the 15th chapter and the 13th verse says, there is joy and peace in believing.

Soon after my wife and I had begun to learn of the science of prayer and claiming Bible promises, and had become most excited and delighted over it all, the Lord permitted a special test to come to us.

Would we really keep our eyes fixed on Jesus?

Or would we permit the evil 1 to in some way rob us of this joy and this peace that only comes by believing that God will do for us what he's promised to do.

I will not go into the details of the trouble that befell us, lest you might be thinking about that during this study, instead of the special lessons that God has for us today.

But we went through a very dark, deep Gethsemane experience.

It was not a financial Gethsemane now, although our finances had not cleared.

It was a fellowship Gethsemane experience that broke our hearts.

We decided that we would take a vacation to Florida and maybe we could somehow regain our composure.

We spent a couple weeks in Florida, and on our return trip, I found myself crabbing over what had happened to me.

I said to my wife, why did this have to happen to us?

Why should I have to be in such a situation of suffering as they've put me through?

For 3 days straight as we're traveling, I was crabbing, grumbling, murmuring, not against God, but against circumstances.

As we retired that night, I went into a sound sleep, and the next morning when I awakened, to my utter astonishment, I couldn't get out of bed.

And you can imagine the misgivings in my heart.

I asked my wife if she would kindly step over and visit and call a medical doctor who was a very close friend of mine.

He came over, checked me over, and he said, you have nerve exhaustion.

Now, I've always been very active, and the thought of being laid up for 6 months didn't appeal to me at all.

And as I was thinking on 6 months, 6 months for you, the text came to my mind, Galatians 6, 7, Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." I said, Lord, I have sown 3 days of negative thinking and negative speaking.

I'm now going to sow 3 days of positive thinking, of joyful expressions, of thanksgiving, and in 3 days I will be up and I'll go home because you've told me that I will reap what I've sown.

So I decided that I would immediately begin to thank the Lord for everything I could think of.

I said, but what can I thank the Lord for?

Friends, if you ever decide that you want to have a good thoroughbred registered nervous breakdown, cease to be thankful.

I couldn't think of 1 thing for which I should be thankful.

You must come to my rescue or I can't even thank you for anything.

I said, Lord, if you'll give me the strength, the first thing I look at, I'll thank you for it.

I looked at the door as I lay there in bed.

And then I added, and thank you, Lord, that it's locked so nobody can poke his head in and look at me.

And then my mind went into a special spin, just like a cracked record.

And then I said, Lord, if you'll come to my rescue again, The first thing I look at, I'll thank you for it again.

And thank you, Lord, that it's locked, so nobody can poke his head in and look at me.

It was not an easy assignment, this assignment of joy and peace in believing God.

There is joy and peace when we believe God and we get our eyes fixed on him.

I completely forgot all the promises that I'd been claiming and which had meant so very much to me through the months.

And here I was, exhausted, my mind going in a whirl like a cracked record.

I cried out again and again to the Lord, Lord, as surely as you help me to go into the joy and the thanksgiving and the praise program, you're going to heal me.

Little by little, I was able to break out by God's grace out of this encasement of self-pity.

At the end of 3 days, I got up, we went home, and I said, Lord, now, along with these promises of God, there goes joy.

There is peace when we really believe your promises.

It is 1 thing to accept your promises theoretically.

It is another thing to make them a part of our very lives.

For every time we encounter a problem, to find a matching promise in God's immutable, eternal, impeccable word, There's joy, there's peace in believing that God keeps his word.

There's no problem of life that God does not have a solution for.

Think of 3, 573 promises in this word, matching every possible problem that can confront the human soul.

Now, help me to share not merely the promises, but to share with men and women the rewards that are theirs if they will not turn from Christ and look at circumstances.

If we will not be engaged in self-pity, but if we'll keep clinging to these promises of God, Like Jacob of old, it is amazing what can take place.

I did begin sharing promises, but I did not share with people as I should the joy and the peace that comes in thanking the Lord for every circumstance in which we find ourselves.

Do we not read in James chapter 1, verses 2 and 3, my brethren, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations, knowing that the trying of your faith works patience?

You see, if when we fall into all kinds of situations, all kinds of tests, if we will recognize that God, who gave his Son to die for us, will permit nothing to come to us except that for which he's made provision, then there's joy and peace in believing that he will not suffer us to be tempted above that we're able.

As we fix our gaze on His promises, on His love, on His protection, joy and peace come to the human heart.

No wonder Jesus said, ask and you will receive and your joy will be full.

It was several years, however, before I really got very far into sharing with people the tremendous reward found in a praise Thanksgiving program to the Lord for every situation and circumstance of life, because God has said through his Apostle, all things work together for good to them that love the Lord, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

How do we know all things work together for good?

The next 4 or 5 verses says, because he that spared not his own son but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

He'll permit tests, he'll permit circumstances, He'll permit trials, He'll permit troubles to come to us, that in these trials and troubles and tribulations we shall claim His promises and cling to them, asking, believing and thanking Him that we have received.

Well, it was several years before we really got down to business in teaching people how they also could receive strength by claiming God's promises and praising Him for every circumstance of life.

We were conducting a series of meetings in a certain city.

A lady came to see me and she said, Pastor Kuhn, I was involved in an automobile accident.

She said, and I had surgery and the surgery was successful.

But she said, it left my nerves in a state of shock.

She said, I went to 1 nerve specialist after another and still another.

Finally, they said, lady, There's nothing more we can do for you.

I thought of my 3 days of crabbing and my consequent nerve exhaustion, then of my 3 days of praising the Lord and being able immediately to go home and resume my work.

And I recall the statement found in that beautiful book entitled the Ministry of Healing, page 253, which says, if we would praise the Lord with all our hearts, you cannot describe what will happen to our health, to our strength, to our nerves.

And then I remembered the text of scripture, Nehemiah 8, 10, the joy of the Lord is your strength.

So I said, you make a list of 10 things for which you're grateful.

Put it on a small card, maybe a 2 by 2 card, just 10 words down the column.

5 - 7 Secrets of Communication

Dear Lord, you promised to make us fishers of men.

We believe that promise as we look to Jesus, our Savior.

And thank you for hearing us in Jesus' name.

Our subject for this hour is 7 Secrets for Catching Men for the kingdom of God.

And his method is so different from man's cruel methods, for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, says the Holy Word of God.

We wish to share with you just how does a mother go about winning her rebellious boy to the Lord Jesus.

How does a husband go about winning his wife who is infatuated with another man?

How does a man go about winning his wife who has never believed in Jesus Christ?

Instead of snagging people and wounding people and killing people, the kingdom of heaven presents to us ways of winning them in a winsome manner, even as Jesus did.

And so we would like to bring to your attention right now 7 of these secrets under 3 special classifications.

She said, what promise can I use for my rebellious boy?

We say there is a promise you can use, Isaiah 49 25, and this promise says, I will save your children.

But as you claim this promise of the Lord to save your son, you will bear in mind these 2 special secrets of soul winning, choice and humility.

And I say to the disturbed mother, you must not use snagging methods to win this boy.

We human beings have used the wrong methods.

We've used the methods such as this fisherman has presented, but notice with me if you will from Isaiah 55 verse 8, for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

So, sister, you must change your thinking, you must change your methods, You must no longer use snagging methods on your son.

She said, what are the snagging methods that I must cease to use?

You must cease to use the method that belittles him, for humility means that you respect him.

So if you would be done with the snagging methods, you'll respect your son, you'll never belittle him.

And to obey the law of choice means that you will not keep nagging him, trying to make decisions for him, trying to educate him.

Here he is in his late teens, He's not waiting to have you tell him what to do.

Oh, she said, that's what I've been doing.

I thought I must belittle him, and I have thought that I must make choices for him in order to guide him in the right way.

And then as the man comes to me and he said, my wife is infatuated with another man.

Say not 1 word, use not 1 expression that will belittle her, and don't try to make choices for her.

But he said, but I thought I was the head of the home.

Yes, I know the Bible says the husband is the head, but it does not say to be the blockhead, to block everything that your wife wants to do, to try to make all the decisions for her, to try to be conscience for her.

When you do that, you're the blockhead instead of the head of the home.

So you will no longer snag her by belittling her.

You'll no longer snag her by trying to be the blockhead, the blockhead of the home.

And then another man comes to me and he said, what about my wife who doesn't even believe in Christ?

How have you been trying to win her, brother?

Well, he said, I've tried to bring her under conviction and so I've belittled her in the way she's living.

Esteem other better than yourself, Philippians 2 3.

And then the law of choice means you cease trying to tell her what to do.

Sometimes ladies will come to us who are praying for their mate and I say now you must also obey the law of humility which means don't belittle anyone.

You must follow the law of choice which means don't try to choose for anyone And sometimes this good lady will say, but I have to set my husband straight once in a while, you know.

And then I will say to her, you know, my friend, don't tell your husband anything to do, even if he puts his socks in the frying pan.

If you won't say a word, in either belittling him or telling him what to do, but if you'll be perfectly quiet, the socks will convey their own message.

Then the problem is between him and the socks, not between him and you.

These 2 laws, these 2 secrets, are called the laws or the secrets of human ease.

The son, this rebellious son, feels at ease in the presence of his mother when she ceases belittling him and trying to over-instruct him.

The wife, who is infatuated with another man, feels at ease again in her husband's presence when he ceases to belittle her and to direct her.

The wife, who is not a Christian but whose husband is, she'll be, she'll feel at ease in his presence when he ceases to try to bring conviction by belittling her and making choices for her.
